My father and my family are from Toledo, Ohio, which has been heralded as "The Glass City". He worked at O-I Glass company beginning at 15 years old and retired at 55. Only job he ever had. I collect old glass bottles. I love when they dig up the old streets around here. I always find treasure. Junk to others. Those old glass coffee jars are what I believe to be old Sanka Instant Coffee jars. I love doing exactly what you boys do. It's great exercise and a history lesson as well.

Sanka was a big deal when it came out, great aunts and great uncles were just enamored of decaffenated "coffee crystals" when it came out in the USA in 1923.🍵

I started collecting the old bottles I dug up during my work as a landscape builder in Australia. I now have a couple of hundred that span over a century, including 1 worth $120-$150 and a number of old China dolls from the early 1900's

Hi gang, those old bottles were very cool to see, even if they were screw tops they still were used by someone back in the day. Very cool search in the woods, thanks for sharing. xx

The first thing my dad looks for at an old home site is the garbage dump. Those coffee jars remind me of my Papa’s Sanka. My mom drank it too, strong. I can still remember the smell of breakfast at Papa’s house. My Mimi would cook him a full on breakfast, with runny eggs, bacon and biscuits and of course a strong cup of Sanka. Later in life he got into the habit of meeting other old guys at Hardee’s to shoot the bull. Thanks for the memory, I hadn’t thought about that in forever.

Noticeably absent are "intact" pop or soda bottles. Those were returnable for deposit. That's how I made my pop & candy money as a kid.
@starjunkie28044 жыл бұрын
Haha...me and my brother did the same thing on the weekends. Always looking for returnable pop bottles for candy.

Bottles were only returned for two cents , five for the larger size , and then over the years the price went up to twenty cents for the larger and a dime for smaller. Then PLASTIC disposable bottles came out in the early 80's.

A old Polaroid camera and R/C bottle but no Moon pie! Never saw Nu-Grape in a can. Also a Sanka instant Coffee bottle . Good collection. I was waiting for a Dr. Pepper in a bottle, my grandma said "it was the only doctor in town with a glass neck"! I know, 1940's humor. I have a 1890's Hires root beer extract bottle in my collection, "Makes 5 gallons of a delicious Root Beer drink"! Good one Robert.

Those bottles have been there a very long time going by the depth, the soil look lush, nice & dark & moist. Junk is extreme interesting. I just remember those puncture cans.

I love these kinds of finds. I applied for a “mudlarking” permit for the Thames river. But, I had no time on my trip. You could poke around the shore at low tide and could find all kinds of cool things.

I unearthed about 20 years ago with a friend of mine, loads of bottles that got buried from around 1920s-30s period. After a freight train derailed and all the bottles got buried from the impact of the wagon. Interesting finds. I might have to visit again. Be loads more still 🙂

@@AdventuresIntoHistory I'm not sure if my friend still has a few of the bottles. Because there is a market especially in England for antique bottle collectors. Amazing what you can unearth. Great watching your exploring of graves too. That is one of my favourites. Stay Safe Robert and the team 🌈

If you look closely, you see black burn marks. They would burn all the rubbish. The bottles survived. Everything else did not.
