Oh god no. Because then he'd have to make a pulley system just above, which would displace something probably important, like part of an upper bedroom or something. Plus, what if the power goes out? Not many elevators can rely on manual power. What WOULD work, however, is a sturdy yet sliding floor panel to reveal the shaft opening. Reason being, a hatch entrance might collide with the closet door, making it hard, if not impossible to get in or out. Unless if the closet door swings outward. Dunno, tho: I only saw that the door was missing altogether with only a hinge.

You need a steel lintel with steel supports under the portion of the foundation you have removed the dirt from under, especially since you are going to cut away part of the footing. If you don't do this, the masonry wall will start to sag and crack. Since the house is sitting on clay, you will also want to reinforce the hole you made through the floor slab since that is part of where the weight of the house is transferred. You will also want to have a gap between the slab/footing and your concrete for the tunnel fo the exact reason you talked about when the soil swells in the winter. I am not trained on foundations, but I did help my father put in a basement door in our previous house and these were consideration we had to make about the structure of the foundation having a hole cut through it.

@kleetus922 жыл бұрын
@@jack99889988 Well first of all, methane is lighter than air, so is carbon monoxide, and since CO2 is naturally occurring in the air already, it's not going to magically accumulate underground. You literally have the exact same air in your house right now. You stand the same chance of asphyxiating yourself in your home or conventional basement as you would in the tunnel... also, his tunnel is at roughly the same depth as a conventional basement anyway, or at least within 2-3 feet of it.
@kiliankoe2 жыл бұрын
@@kleetus92 I'd still be wary of CO2 accumulating over time just because it's heavier than air. Having proper active ventilation is never a bad idea. But I don't doubt that this wasn't already on Colin's list.
@kleetus922 жыл бұрын
@@kiliankoe There is something called the 'mean free path' of molecules... it pretty much guarantees that gasses will mix uniformly unless there is an external source displacing said gasses en mass. Like if you had a 200 liter liquid CO2 carboy rupture and flood the area, that would give you a confined space problem. But, just natural air, and a person hanging out breathing, unless it's an airtight seal, it's not going to be an issue. It's why you don't die in your home if you don't open a window.
@tinkerduck13732 жыл бұрын
Generally, it's known from industry that confined spaces are related to much more frequent accidents than what you would assume statistically. I agree, it's never a bad idea to monitor the air (e.g. O2 and CO2) when you're so dependent on it.

@@christopherbedford9897 I'm thinking of all those fantasy and gothic castles which feature a secret escape tunnel from the Lord's bedroom or the back of the throne room to some location outside the view of possible besiegers. How much time, labor and expense did those take to build? And how did they keep such a project secret? Even if they murdered all the workmen, how did they manage to dispose of thousand tons of dirt and rocks without the neighbors finding out?

The only thing you would need to have from the neighbours would be a party wall agreement where it passes close to their house. As an architecture/structural engineering student this is sooooo scary and impressive. Structurally retrofitting buildings is harder than building from scratch, buildings are meant to move like you said and that movement is carefully calculated to disperse all forces, once construction is completed it is tricky business changing up the structure. Typically this is difficult in just changing the structural flow of the upper structure. The fact that you are doing this x1000 by changing the foundation and tunneling under the substructure is absolutely insane. You have balls of steal my friend, been watching for a while and this is off the charts even for your genius. MAJOR props.
