In the comics, one version of how the Batcave came to be is exactly how Gus got the underground lab started on Better Call Saul. In both cases, the workers were brought in, had no idea where they were, did the digging, and were very well paid.

You (In my opinion) really need a window with lighting behind, to 'show' the rock while in the Garage. Does not have to be large, but something for looking 'outside' I guess. Cause everyone needs a window in their Garage! I also think you should include a sump pump for emergency evacuation of water just in case. While you can still include it into your design for if a leak or flooding were to occur. Love what you have completed there. Just amazing!

If the room is large enough, the second car space could also be used for car repairs. For that matter, you could have a trench under the car parking spot, between the lift, again for maintenance and repairs. Whatever lift mechanism you install, just remember you’re going to want to be able to service it eventually.

You could test your system for lowering your DMC into the ground by creating a smaller version of it next to your shed to raise and lower your lawn mower and even build in an additional rack to hold garden tools, weed eaters, etc, etc. and you ( if I am looking at your drawings correctly ) would be able to build an underground access to this lift right off the tunnel just by adding a door. This would also provide a larger lift system to get some of your heavier objects underground. I absolutely can not wait, but will patiently do so anyways for the videos to come! I'd recommend you look at modern aircraft carriers and how their lifts work, since they essentially do exactly what you want to do with the car port. Older types load aircraft from the middle with a ratchet mechanisim, newer carriers go from the side with two arms running alongside the ship. As for rotating the car, you might be able to get away with a SMALL scissorlift in the middle of the main lift, that props the car up and turns it around, without having to turn the entire lift. (which is probably going to weigh several tons!)
@foldionepapyrus3441
@foldionepapyrus3441 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed - I was thinking along similar lines, though perhaps the easist way to do the car rotating and 2nd car fitting is if each car is parked on a "pallet" - when it reaches the floor the pallets own wheels have tracks to run in that allow it to be driven sideways for a second car parking spot or just a little sideways into the loop for a rotation. Each pallet could also be pinned into angled rails on two of the walls (parallel to the front of the house) so the lateral translation to bring the car up central to the driveway while allowing enough space for rotation down below is all handled as the lift progresses.

Hi Colin. Long time viewer, first time commenter. I love how you progressed from wacky machines to massive engineering projects like this tunnel. My suggestion is to leave one of the tunnel ends open so the rock wall is visible and maybe cover the end with a thick glass panel or plexiglass. Would be cool to see the rock face in an alcove like that to remember how it all began. Also, the steel wall panels have perfect frames for mural paintings. Perhaps you could get your kids or neighbourhood kids to start painting these wall sections. A bit of color on those black walls would be great. Have a great day Colin! You are an awesome engineer!

As someone who builds elevators for a living a hydraulic elevator makes the most sense to carry the weight of the car. They don't require a Counterweight and you can bury the piston below the ground and have it telescope up. You do need a room for a hydraulic tank and a small area for the controller. Making it a lazy suzan is tricky because standard Hydro elevators need the platform mounted directly to pistons on either side. You can do a roped Hydro but that takes up more room and you can't put the piston in the ground. An in ground Hydro with the piston in the center of the platform is your best bet. In order to get the platform to spin you would need a way to detach the platform from the platen plate (top of piston) as well as the guide rails. That's almost impossible. You can't spin a platform on guide rails. So instead of making the whole platform spin why not just make part of it spin. Cut a circular section out of a square platform and build a motorized lazy suzan out of your circular cut out. This way it can spin regardless of how close your elevator is to the wall and regardless of whether it's at the top or bottom. Doing this systems also merits a lot of safety features. You can use IR to make sure nobody or thing is near moving components, so the elevator won't move without a perfect IR signal. Also if the IR breaks the elevator won't move. Basically garunteed safety if you place the IR properly. The only problem with this is cost vs doing a scissor lift. A fully functional peele freight elevator costs hundreds of thousands at the low end. Millions at the high end. Just a though. DM me if you want rough sketches or pictures for reference. I take a lot of pictures at work so I have tons to go off of.

he could absolutely use a 2 or 3 stage cylinder so the hole for the cylinder so it doesn't have to be so deep. just remember. hes gotta dig all that crap out. I was a millwright at a boise cascade plant, making play wood, we had a hot press. basically, after all the veneer got laid out, it was shoved into a special racking system that used steam heat to press and set the glue. there were two of these presses, with 5, 9 inch diameter piston cylinders each. the whole thing raised up like 20 feet. what absolutely sucked, was the maintenance. it was the oiliest place in the building (because it required so damn much), and if a seal went bad, you had a hell of a project on your hands. but that said, he could absolutely mount a separate frame to this cylilder, and put a rotating platen on top of that. use a hydraulic turner to rotate it.

I'm a little late to commenting, but as far as the plan for the car lift... I like the idea of a hidden lift system, like a spy movie, something contained within the garage that you could then drive off of and into the space below the driveway. In my mind, this system also has a false garage floor that automatically goes into place when the lift is underground.

You could have your DeLorean drive onto an oval shaped cog platform that rests on the lift and is turned around by another identical (reciprocate) cog beneath the surface. Alternatively, you could use a giant drawer slide along the wall of the space connected to the platform by a hinge, which could pivot the whole thing 180 degrees. You'd want the connection to break vertically, but not horizontally, so it can allow the lift to separate from the wall slide thingy, then engage once it's been lowered. Just a couple ideas.

So a civil engineer here. A turn table at at the bottom makes the most sense for turning, however as you pointed out you can’t put it right up against the corner. A solution would be to have the turn table be a rectangle slightly larger than the car and have a rail type slide under the tyres so it can be moved easily from left to right. This will mean you’ll have hydraulic powered turn table with slots which engage and disengage most likely with a screw, so a mechanical system like a quick release for a vice. This will allow the turn table to turn and have the slots stay with the car and move, then reengage to the scissor lift. I would suggest the scissor lift have those slots engaged in some fashion again with the quick release system, I can see having another platform under the car which is independent of the turn table be what lifts the car up. This could be a hydraulic ramp from a garage, could be easier but I couldn’t say. The other thing is getting that close to the main road the highways department of the council will want to know and make an assessment so you don’t cause structural issues to the carriageway and foot way. For the mapping of where cables are etc ask your local council for stats for your house and road, it’ll be a small fee maybe 20 or so for the maps and this will allow you to see roughly where the cables are as well as who owns what land etc. i don’t expect a reply but if you do I am a real civil engineer for a local council and I’d be more than happy to give free advice because this is very cool so just message me and we can go from there

The Clarke Boxer seems to be a standard one with only one cylinder, but you can get silent compressors with multiple cylinders that will produce the same airflow & pressure while producing waaayy less noise & vibrations. For the underground garage your rotating mechanism could be made to stop at 90 degrees to allow you to store the cars in the left part of the garage (left in this video). You should be able to store 2 cars that way and you could use that mechanism that car wash places use to move the cars on the lift and into the parking spaces without having to drive it.

He could do both if he placed the Red Phone Booth were the planned car lift is, and then he could move the car lift into his Car Park (Garage) and have the floor go up and down. Or better yet, build the lift in front of the garage as spare underground parking space. That might give him room for 3 cars: One in Garage, one under ground, and the other parked onto of the lift (Wonder if it can be strong enough to lift and get the other car out. Of course, that might rule out the rotating mechanism!

With the scissor lift instead of having the drive bit on the top raising up, perhaps it should slide making it less obstructive on the surface and easier for a horizontal shift rather than a vertical one. Also in the parking room under the ground you could have conveyor belts to move the parked vehical horizontally and rotate it away from the side and have the conveyor belts move it back to the original position.

For the garage, I think the best thing (not the most practical) to do would be to have a circular platform that raises and lowers. On surface level there would be a rectangular (so as to not make awkward shapes on the ground) platform that opens, much like escalator doors but horizontally, and beneath them would be the circular platform (raised). Then as the car is parked on the circular platform it starts to lower and when there is enough clearance the rectangular doors close. After that the circular platform starts to rotate underground (preferably before it reaches the bottom, but there probably will not be enough height unless the up and down motion is very slow) and voila! the car is in position.
@pigalex
@pigalex 2 жыл бұрын
20:00 i’d recommend augmenting a mechanic’s hydraulic lift. they can lift heavy things (obviously) and can take a bit of extra weight (maybe a fence around the vehicle with a gate that auto opens on the surface?) AND they have built in safeties to help prevent things like sudden collapses. in terms of car rotation, make the entire underground room a big circle and have a spinning roulette wheel for PickACar™️. in the middle would be the static platform which lifts you up, this solves turning the car around because you can just rotate the roulette until the slot you want is directly behind the car and reverse into it (and just drive forwards 180* later)

If anything, a mechanical lift instead of a hydraulic one would be more of hassle but less servicing is needed and can incorporate locks to prevent it from falling. much like a elevator

My suggestion for the car lift is to have it be a circular platform that spins to turn the car around (Similar to a train turntable). Under the platform will be hydraulics to lift and spin it. So you can turn the car around underground, on the surface, or as you are going up or down. I think a square or rectangle lift would need too much room to spin. I think you could have a retractable roof so it doesn't need to be connected to the lift, basically when you go down the roof will extend from the ground and cover the hole (similar to a retractable pool cover but solid) and when the lift is up the roof/cover doesn't need to be used.

Before worrying about how to get the turntable on the lift to work, I’d worry about adding a drain to the bottom of the floor with a bilge pump to evacuate any water in case of flooding. It’s not as big an issue with the rest of the underground since it’s all sealed off from above by the house and the shed, but the addition of a lift is going to create a major leak point. Yes it can be sealed and waterproofed but in a major flood that’s going to be the first point to fail and leak.

It would be kinda impractical, but a bulkhead-like door in addition to the drain would cool, effective, and it would the bunker aesthetic.

Just watched part 1 to 10 again for the second time, enjoyed as much as the first. Absolutely brilliant tunnelling! What about an underground swimming pool??

I just discovered this series today, subscribed and watched the whole thing from start to finish. Without exaggeration or hyperbole, this is the greatest thing Ive ever seen on youtube.

I'm no expert, but my advice on making your garage lift a reality whilst getting the full 360 rotation you are looking for would be to make the elevator a disc turntable, or at least have the mechanical lifting sections be disc shaped with wheels/or runners of some kind on the sides and bearings/freespinning joint on the bottom. get or make some spiraling circular metal guides (like the kind of guides garage doors use) spiraling 360 as it goes upwards on the inner of the elevator shaft and on the supports for the shaft. If you had a system like this it would allow you to turn your car 360 degrees without having to spend extra power/machine work spinning the platform, all you would have to worry about would be providing the power to push the lift up and down. Be it with hydraulics, pneumatics, or winches of some kind. The freespinning circular platform and the rollers spinning with the guides would turn the car 360 using only the energy pushed on it by the upwards/downwards movement. If this doesn't make sense, the best way I can describe it would be like the rifling on a gun, the spiraling metal guidelines in the elevator shaft moving the wheels along with the platform as pressure is applied by the lift, turning the turntable. Heck, if you line up your car right and give enough room for the car to turn before it fully makes it to the top, the entrance/exit could even be rectangular even if the lift itself is circular, as long as the car clears and lines up with the exit before fully popping out of the ground/going underground. Hopefully this comment reaches you, and if It does I hope any of it makes a lick of sense. lol

You and Mark Rober should do a collaboration video on the mechanical engineering of the lift and turn table. I have absolutely loved this series and can't wait to see the future underground garage.
