In this week’s episode, Nic and I went metal detecting with our Minelab Manticores in the woods at a site that will soon be developed. We knew there would be old coins and relics waiting for us, but I did NOT expect to be digging coins that we simply NEVER find! I’m shocked at how well this day turned out! Enjoy!
I now sell metal detecting equipment through The Diggers Den! Be sure to reach out to me on Facebook Messenger (Stef Tanguay) or email (stefdigs@gmail.com) for assistance on selecting the most appropriate gear for you, as well as the best deals we have available!

The buttons, musket balls and buckles were great, but those two coins- WoW! Never seen one of those 12 Skillings ever, didn't know they existed- yours cleaned up sweet! Awesome job Stef!

Thank you! I didn’t know they existed, either. 😂 I found an 1802 copper 1/4 Skilling last year, and it’s the size of a large cent. Was a really awesome coin, but it didn’t clean up well, so I was stoked to find a silver version with a higher denomination!

Stef, your videos get me so pumped up for detecting! And I always want to write a novel talking about the cool things you dig but I don't want to be a pest and always leave novels. So, I'll keep it as short as I'm capable. That silver Skilling was sooo much fun to watch you discover. I've never heard of that coin until now. Beautiful! Also, I agree that you have a couple of native kettle brass pieces. Especially the smooshed, cone-shaped one that's cinched at the end. I've read that those were used as decorative appointments on the end of tassels on native garments. That's why they would be cinched at the end, so they wouldn't slip off the tassel or cordage. There I go leaving a novel again. Dad gummit. I can't help it, your videos really do get me pumped up. You find exceptionally nice stuff!

Haha, no worries, always happy to hear from you! You’ve definitely gotta take your machine to your honey hole - I don’t know if you find many Woodland period points there (since I only know enough about Native American artifacts to be dangerous, lol), but you could certainly surprise yourself and find some contact period brass relics! Certainly worth a shot! 🤘🏻

Another great video. Just for a bit of background information, medieval silver pennies were cut in half to make halfpennies for change. Cut two halfpennies in half and you would have performed a “fourthing” which became the word “farthing” or quarter of a penny and this continued even when they were a copper coin specifically made to be a quarter of a penny. Great find. Andy

The brass kettle piece is a tinkler. Native people would sew them into the hems of their buckskin dresses or leggings. Some are like yours and rolled partially and most of them are completely rolled into a full circle.. They would hit together and make a pleasant musical like tone when walking. When dancing they would make a pretty loud jingle.👍♋

Funny you expected your last coin would turned up to be an English silver hammered coin. I just identified one two days ago which was found in the south of the Québec Province (that can not be this far from where you are). Like your Danish coin (congrats for this nice piece of history), a hole was made in it. It is an Edward the 1st silver hammered penny long cross minted in Canterbury at the end of the 13th or the very beginning of the 14th century, more than 200 years before the first europeans settled in the area. I hope you will find a hammered someday too. I personaly did not find any English one (in France) even if some of them can be seen on our Facebook group to be identified from time to time. This demand emanated from a Québec origin came as a real surprise. I urged the new owner to contact the provincial historic service (or whatever the local name for it) as I expected it to be a rare find on the other side of the pond (or is it not rare?).

Thank you! I’m in Connecticut, and we can find some pretty old stuff around here - my oldest coins are from the mid-1600s, well within the time period where any of those coins could’ve been hammered, but they’re all milled… one day! 🤞🏻

@StefDigs
@StefDigs 9 ай бұрын
I can see why it looks like that! The patina of 17th century kettle brass is very specific, I believe it’s part of the rim and was cinched at the end to hold one of the handles in place. The Native Americans would utilize as much of the brass as they possibly could, but I believe this is scrap and looking back, probably wasn’t a bead or anything.

I really love the Manticore, I’ve only picked up my 900 once since I got the Manticore in March, and that was in order to use the 15” coil in tall grass before the 15” Manticore coils became available. Specifically, where I feel the Manticore is most superior to the 900 has to do with the 2D screen. It takes a lot of guesswork out of the equation once you learn the Manticore, and that’s invaluable if you’re hunting in very trashy sites. I also really like the customizable audio profiles. For example, I’m deaf in one ear and the other ear isn’t great, either. There’s a specific audio profile I can use that allows me to hear deep and shallow targets at a similar volume, reducing the chance I’ll miss a deep target because of my poor hearing. In general, the information you receive with the Manticore is the biggest advantage - the 900 is an excellent machine, but the Manticore really can’t be matched.

When you truly understand the machine, yes. If you’re still learning it or just can’t wrap your head around it, then no. Truly depends on the user, but I feel it has tremendous potential in the right hands.
