Canonically the air in their world is more oxygenated, which gives people way more muscle strength to work with and lets animals grow way bigger. But also, you're still swinging around a sword bigger than your body, so it still pulls the hunter along with it because there's only so much superhuman strength can make up for.

Going in with the boring usage of monsters, they could have made the nerscylla interesting if they put it in context of it’s ecology. It’s a ambush based jungle predator that wears the skin of it’s prey for protection and poison. It could have been an interesting connection do draw about the world: it’s not just the hunters who use the parts of other monsters.

In a franchise where there are monsters that sweat nitro-glycerine into inflatable scales that it then uses to carped bomb whole regions, monsters that blow bubbles to make you slip and uses the sound of them popping as a form of eco-location, and who wears their scales backwards in order to deal as much rupture damage as possible as they ram into their target, Rathalos is really as bland as you can get, both design wise and kit wise.

Rath is a good starting point to demonstrate an apex predator and Large category monster. Think of MHW and how there, you first fight an Anjanath, but eventually it roams into Rathian territorry and gets bodied. Rathalos works to teach some key elements of hunting in monster hunter: - Sexual dimorphism as a way to teach different movesets. Rathalos likes flying and shooting, Rathian likes smashing and fighting close quarters. He shoots, she smashes. This means you fight them differently. With Rathalos it's important to break wings so he won't fly and shoot, but this would do nothing against Rathian, because due to her moveset the most dangerous attacks involve her tail. - Territorial. There are parts of a map where Rathalos will and won't be, and knowing this helps both avoiding them when they're not the target and finding them when they are. Additionally it can help trigger turf fights, which have been in the series for a while even before mhw, they just weren't pseudo cutscenes before. - Resistances and weaknesses. they are resistant to fire, which means taking it down involves more specific types of weaponry - Consumable preparation. They are all poisonous, you should not fight one without antidotes at the ready, and sometimes this extends to hunts where they're merely present and could interfere. Of course this is all present in a lot of monsters, but the rath family is simple and straightforward, they'd probably be the best ones to demonstrate the both ecology of monster hunter and the logistics of the Guild. It's not about the monster, it's about the presentation.

Except, in lore, the Hunters do their job to ensure the Monsters (especially invasive species like Deviljho or Bazelgeuse or any of the Elder Dragons) don't wreak havoc on the ecosystem. I find that unlikely. The military is likely in the film because the US military funds movies in exchange for having some control over how they're presented. I wasn't even particularly bother by the isekai, it's not my favourite sub-genre, and it's possible to do it really well. This movie didn't. What bothered me most is the director's apparent disregard for the established monsters and their ecology. I read in one of the film updates that capcom reps had to remind Anderson about monster ecology several times, and even veto his attempt to make the Diablos seem more intimidating by making it look nastier (as though Diablos needed to be more intimidating). This implies that he didn't really care about the monsters themselves and how they work within the world, he just wanted them to be scary for his movie, which explains that whole Nerscylla flesh burster scene. I don't think he knows (or cares) that the Diablos is actually a herbavore. We spent too much time learning about the trans-dimensional portal lore that they made up for the film, and almost no time at all learning about the actual world of monster hunter. They blatantly copied the mewoster chef sequence from MHW, and then not a single other Lynian showed up anywhere in the film, when they are almost as common as humans. This last bit is just a personal nitpick of mine, but when we saw the mountain top where the portal would open and it had ruins and storms, my monster hunter brain said "that's Alatreon territory" and I was then unusually disappointed that they would be hunting a Rathalos instead. Then he had hunters going after the Rathalos with fire weapons, and that was just really stupid, but my brain had checked out by that point, so I couldn't even muster enough energy to be annoyed when the Rathalos showed up in the real world.
@conspiracypanda1200
@conspiracypanda1200 2 жыл бұрын
That portal garbage really took up more time than it had any right to. Funny how the Isekai angle actually eats into the time the movie could've used to better establish the uniqueness of the Monster Hunter universe. And that's not even getting into nitpicks like how the land is labelled The New World when any fan could tell it was _clearly_ set in Tri (-esque) areas, plus the fact the New World Crew was a bunch of jerks when, in the source material, they and every other hunting crew are the jolliest humans(?) to ever throw themselves headfirst at enraged, fire-breathing dragons. You know what would have been way better? Just have some typical 'coming of age' story of a naive wanna-be hunter. That way more time could've been spent looking at the unique technology, actually ecologically justified monsters, exaggerated environments and surprisingly enthusiastic cultures. But nah, we gotta turn the series about bombastically balancing nature at its most bat-shit insane into a survival horror story because Resident Evil accedentally dropped its genre back when it fell face-first into the silver screen.

I actually would love if they used the Isekai thing to explain the ecosystem and the monsters' biology. Just put a Biologist on the team, and let him/her nerded out in MH world. So here's how you do a Monster Hunter movie: 1. Make it animated. That way, it doesn't look bad when your main character has to fight a big angry fire-breathing dinosaur 2. We get just enough context to justify the hunt and then we just go all-in on the action. Maybe Hunter's family is struggling for money or something, he goes out, we get a solid Rathalos fight, he comes back, boom, money. Simple and to the point, just like the games. Maybe we build on a bigger plot with bits of background details, like maybe he sees hints of a specific monster around and then he has to save the village from it, and maybe there's someone who hates him or something that they work together with. But the main thing is that the monster fights are the focus. 3. No isekai and maybe even no dialogue. You can get more than enough context from visual cues and that's fair enough for this type of franchise. Is the MC doing this for a good reason? Can he bash a dragon in the face with a big weapon? If yes to both then that's honestly good enough. I dunno, I feel like that should cover everything.
@CoolxBreese

@@dracocrusher Your #2 and #3 is how I imagined an MH movie would work before this abomination. Little dialogue with lots of visual storytelling and a simple, straightforward plot. I'd like to point out, the Diablos in this movie is a female subspecies called a Black Diablos (I say "subspecies" loosely as Black Diablos are just female Diablos whose skin has turned black since they're in heat). Also, Diablos are supposed to be herbivores who eat cacti but are extremely aggressive (think hippo-level aggressive) and territorial. They DO NOT travel in groups nor will they attack anyone unless they get too close to their territory and only chase them until they are out of their domain. Finally, that ship they're attacking is meant to withstand attacks BY ELDER DRAGONS.

Monster Hunter gives you a world, a setting, essentially a playground! Take the free world building and the lighthearted fun mood (I recommend watching the video "Monster Hunter, A Culture Of Danger" for a neat analysis of that vibe) and tell whatever story you want! But instead, like you said, they made a bog standard pseudo-gritty movie about nothing. How lazy can writing get. I don't use this phrase lightly with any piece of art, but even I could have written this better. What upsets me the most is what monesters they chose for this movie. Because there is one monster that is a perfect fit. And no, not bazelgeus. A monster, gigantic in size. Devouring all that is in its path. Humans and monster alike fear in respons to its name alone. The natural disaster taken flesch. The never ending hunger. Deviljoh. But for real, Deviljoh is the perfect monster for that kinda basic monster hollywood movie. Because the games treat him like those brain less movie monsters. He always needs to eat, otherwise he dies. So he destroys ever ecosystem he visits, wich is a gigantic problem. He is the perfect monster for a stereotypical monster movie. But they used diablos, the monster that eats the plants and the poster child rahtalos. Oh and fun fact. Werwolf within is based on werwolf. And old game. Not videogame, not board game, not card game(there is a card game version) Just a game like tag or something. Just people in a circel, acting and trying to gasligth each other over murders. Pretty fun.

Danger pickle absolutely would've been a good monster pick. It's already practically a constantly rampaging ecological disaster, easy setup for a plot right there, assembling a team of local hunters in a hurry to try to deal with a Deviljho popping up too close to town for the guild to send hunters from elsewhere in time to intercept it before it's already on the town itself.

For real though, that’s one of the things that drew me into monster hunter. The fact that they actually try to explain how the things that the creatures can do in a natural sense. Like, Brachydios for instances. It simply causes explosions, right? Nope, it actually forms a symbiotic relationship with the slimy moss that grows on its body. The moss heats up and combusts, and is reactive to Brachydios saliva. Basically, the moss gets a free ride to spread and propagate, and Brachydios gets an extra kick to its already brutal attacks when hunting or in a fight. Or another symbiotic relationship involving Zinogre and the lightning bugs. Large wolf-like lightning drake? Nope, it simply uses the electricity generated from the lightning bugs that nest within its fur. The only things they really can’t explain are the elder dragons, but that’s the whole selling point of that category of monster. Seemingly mystical and almighty creatures that can change and ruin an ecosystem if left unchecked.

@@windrider2190 the Zinogre-Fulgurbugs one is one that really gets me in particular. Fulgurbugs’ main predator are Gargwa, whose beaks act as an insulator against the shock. Zinogre are some of the main predators of Gargwa, so some Fulgurbugs decided to stick around them. While that might have been uncomfortable for Zinogre’s ancestors, the Fulgurbugs likely zapped away all the other parasites and pests on them, and helped with fights against equally matched opponents. Eventually, they became the Zinogre we have today. Stygian Zinogre likely comes from a population of Ancestor Zinogre that had a similar thing happen with Dracophages. …You know, that’s an interesting thing to think about; What if there are other Zinogre that bonded with different elemental life? An Ice-wielding Zinogre in the desert, whose symbiotic partners eat Chillshrooms; A Water-wielding Zinogre in a volcano(or could swap with the Ice one), coated in Watermoss; A Fire-wielding Zinogre dwelling in the cold north, commanding what look like living embers to create steam from the snow so it can blindside its prey.

You only having played World and Rise sort of worsens your 'Monster usage' critique. While I agree that it would've made more sense to use 5th gen Monsters given it's usage of World characters, at that point it should've been titled 'Monster Hunter World: The Movie.' And even then, you don't really bring up anything about the monsters that are in the movie that make them unique regardless, besides the factoid that Black Diablos are females in heat, and how the movie makes use of none of it. Nerscylla not only looks basically nothing like they do in-game, it's not even a desert monster. Unless it's Shrouded Nerscylla, in which case it's still wrong. Nothing about how it skins other monsters to wear as protection, or it's gigantic pincers. They chose to MAKE it into a generic giant spider. Diablos isn't shown eating cactus to show it's actually a herbivore, and this movie's Rathalos is a dumb super Rathalos that gets killed in a way that's never been a thing before. And Gore Magala is an absolutely TERRIBLE cliff-hanger monster because it's entire thing is that it causes wide-spread rabies-like infections on monsters. It alone can be the plot of a movie, and yet it's used as lip-service.
@SotheX

Honestly, 'Monster Hunter World: The Movie' would have been an upgrade. Imagine in the hands of a better director, they made a film with an original character finding themselves on the outskirts of Astera, having to find out the ways how to hunt, and get short little showcase montages of all the fauna. Focus their efforts on a main threat of course, with one or two on some MHW notables, like Bazel. Assuming a film like that would go well, and not do clear sequel baiting, you could even do other films, with a new cast in different settings, such as Kamura, Minegarde, Loc-Lac, Dundorma, Val Habar, Port Tanzia or even Soaratorium. This could be how you diversify the cast of monsters even, so it's not over or under saturated with bad picks. Also, cut the guy some slack. A lot of new players joined the community since World was released. I'd prefer us veterans not be elitist asses with lore dumping. Get enough of that in MR lobbies.

Then.. I completely forgot about it. Now I know why and it's for the better. Shame for such a trully wasted opportunity. There are these stone cones around her. I was sooo ready for them to be Bazels bombs. Imagine, just imagine of they were. What a scene you could make from that. The main issue with videogame movies is the popularity. Assassins Creed, Resident Evil etc are not adapted because their story or visuals would work great in a movie but because they are big IPs people will want to see in the movie. Franchises do ruin Hollywood as anything new and unique is never even considered for anything with a budget but you can get the 15th remake of Friday 13 quite easily. Just imagine Gris as an animated movie, its not hard cause the game is basically that already with token gameplay. Now that is a movie I want to watch. But nobody in hollywood knows about a small niche indie game maybe 10 people are gonna see in the theater so there's not gonna be a movie. And that is why capitalism ruins art.

I hope that we can see a Monster Hunter Movie where yes, people from the outside are transported here, but we get a group of 4. A blacksmith, Biologist, Carpenter, and Doctor. They find a village (possibly Loc Lac) and over time they learn how the society survives and the inner workings. The driving force wouldn't be some monster they need to kill, but instead them simply enjoying their stay while trying to get home. At the end they all fight Jhen Mohran and can go home, but they decide to stay for a little bit, allowing for a potential sequel. This could potentially be a great movie if done right. Note how the beginning characters have a profession that could influence the fight and their armor/weapon. For example, the carpenter could possibly use armor from that of a Sand Barioth since they both are things that cut objects.

I am pretty sure I could/have already develloped a monster hunter esque monster hunting story that could potentially develop into a movie. Likely not a good one, but well better than this thing. What a pathetic take of the Monster Hunter universe. Heartless through and through.

This is just sad, we could've had a pretty good film if the writers gave a shit about what they were writing, personally i like the idea of a MH film being an Isekai, it would make a nice contrast between the more jovial and overthetop hunters to the grounded and stalwart military team rather then just all of them being cynical assholes for the majority, nice moments of the guild helping them, having a good meal with Meowscular Chef, gearing up to take on the ruins and go home, if you have them meet the guild and establish early on the ruins are their ticket home you could tie into the games progress system thematically, have Artimus try to storm the ruins on impulse and get royally thrashed by the menagerie that live there, then after some time living with the guild she and her team are able to get through and fight the elder dragon. (Because why would it just be an oversized Rathalos? i get that it's the poster boy but i feel you have elder dragon causing the portals to open it at least makes sense considering their status as mythic beings able to influence the world, have the Rathalos act as Artemis' wall instead of the Diablos, like how Ajanath is like the first real wall for players in MHW and have them show up now and again, maybe even gaining mutual respect for Artemis and helping out once the elder dragon starts invading it's territory.) Could you imagine the moment they're taking on the boss and "Proof of a Hero" starts playing, i'm half tempted to make it myself if it wasn't so futile, MH would make an excellent movie if you try to work with what you're given, something most writers nowadays take great pride in trying to subvert thinking they can just do whatever they want with a property that wasn't theirs to begin with, this film just feels worthless and i'm just sad we couldn't have gotten better.

Oh shit! I'm in a youtube video! Or at least my tweet is! Woo! I am.... truly baffled by the choice to make Monster Hunter..... edgy? I mean I know we like to do that with ALL media nowadays, but MH just feels so purely and uncomplicatedly FUN and all the characters are friendly and helpful and work together that this is just. Bizarre.

I feel like the only way they could make a "story" driven movie is to make one based of of the 4 Ultimate story with Gore Magala because it's the only real story driven monster Hunter game because gore is a constant and observable threat

I will say the best story in a mainline monster hunter game is mh4, which has a surprisingly compelling narrative told through small means. I recommend looking into it.

Whenever I see this movie I think about what could've been. Imagine all the beautiful monsters and interactions that could've been! Imagine Bazel's roar suddenly being heard. I'd even imagine a carped bomb joke. Nargacuga stalking them within a forest, or using the Diablos to introduce something more threatening by, f.e. having Diablos being visibly scared by the sight of a sudden Deviljho... Haaa, what could've been

"accidently got a little racist" may be a bit generous. from the way they mock hunter both for not understanding artimis and for not understanding that artimis understands him (making him the one that's an idiot both times.) and the way hunter is infantized and his grief it made irrelevant and mocked, to the way they had to completely rewrite every character's personality, making them more antagonisted specifically to justify artimis distrusting them and to make a "oh no, i'm at the mercy of scary people who dont look like me" scene. not to mention ron pearlman in yellowface. there isn't a single section of the movie with more than just artimis on screen that isn't, bare minimum, absolutely dripping in micro aggressions. the only way any of this was an accident is if this is so deep seeded in the minds of (some of) the creators that this seems perfectly normal to them. made all the worse by how effortlessly the MHW tie in avoids all of it.

Oh my god, are they really doing the whole caveman thing of 'Hunter doesn't know a modern thing so he's obsessed with it"? Ohh noooo... Hey, imagine you've never had a burger before and someone handed you one. You wouldn't be like "OOOOHHH, GIMME MORE! OOOH! OHH!", you'd be like "Wow, this is pretty good."

@@mrlaz9011 The idea that someone can eat a full meat/veggie/fish bowl with lobster cooked to perfection by a giant cat on a precision grill and then freak out over chocolate is just insane. If anything, they should have had him pull the opposite reaction and be like "Wha? Ew." and spit it out. Then you have the woman be like "What do you eat, then?" and they do the goofy perfect steak game, lol. Would it make sense? Probably not completely, but it'd be pretty hilarious and lead into an iconic game reference easily. You could even have a scene where they try to understand eachother's languages over food just to get the Hunter to say "So Tasty". That'd unironically a fun way to ground the characters and provide some grounding humor, if nothing else.

I know of course after watching your content for years how intelligent, well-spoken, and genuine you are, so I am not surprised, just happily entertained. Definitely looking forward to more on this channel. I still need to watch Annihilation so I can watch your essay on it; watching this has definitely increased my need to do so haha. P.s., would love to see a video from you on your favorite movies, series, and books--your background had me so curious!

As for suggestions, perhaps more body language during video segments of yourself? I find that hand gestures etc help to get thoughts across better and help to keep the viewer's attention.

It’s funny that in the middle of all this shit there was Legends of the Guild, which for all its many many flaws was clearly made by people with a great deal of love and respect for the series. Aiden and the other Ace Hunters are actually NPCs dating back to MH4, ones who people like me have a lot of nostalgia for since that’s the game with the most memorable story. I believe the movie actually started production pre MHW, and the framing device was actually added later to tie it into the more recent game. It’s very true to the spirit of the franchise, but that also means it has the one note writing the series usually has, which honestly is okay sometimes

To be fair to the isekai plot, I'm realizing that there have been a few isekai plots in the games, Witcher crossover, Final Fantasy XIV, and now soldiers from our Earth. There may be more that I'm missing, however. Also, I can make a LOT of mental gymnastics manuvers to bridge the gap between the apparent plot holes, but you shouldn't HAVE to go down rabbit holes to justify shit like this.

One thing about how they kept repeating how Rath was weak before it breathed fire, THATS LITERALLY GLAVENUS'S THING. That's like part of his fight, it's even mentioned in game after you fight him for the first time. He goes into a low stance and fire spurts out of his mouth, his throat glowing brightly. If you damage his head enough during that time, it causes an explosion and he gets knocked down. BUT NO, LETS GIVE THAT TO THE MONSTER WHO DOESNT HAVE THAT PROBLEM. Smh man
