You're not "hacking" you're "propagating" and creating more healthy beauties & helping your plants thrive. Those dried blooms make great decoration for Winter decor. My next door neighbors have some that I get to enjoy viewing out the window by my chair. That "Blueberry Muffin" Hosta is a sweet plant. Looks good by that Brunnera. I've never had one but should put it on my list.

I have the classic limelights and they do take hard prunes just fine, your little limelights don't grow that big but if you ever need to prune them way back you should be fine, yours looks so healthy too. I have an Annabelle as well that I will be dividing this fall, but what I found with these is that they do need some sort of support regardless of their size, some years are better as far as flopping with these kind... YAY for free plants!

Jes, I noticed you have a lot of space in your basement that could become your winter plant sanctuary if you installed a lot of artificial light on timers. I hate it when frost takes out my beautiful flowers, but you can bring some of them inside with completely artificial lighting and they will bloom beautifully for you. It sure makes wintertime a lot more bearable to have blooming things around you

I love your planting hack- how you dump a big bucket of water into the hole then backfill the dirt back onto the plant I never thought to plant that way and I’m terrible about replanting my plants and forgetting to water them in then I’m reminded when I see a floppy thirsty plant on it’s last leg because of my memory lapse!

Hi Jes 👋 I don’t currently have any of those hydrangeas, but it’s great to know and see how you would divide one .. with that one root going across from one stem to the other that you hacked in half. I would never have known you could divide a shrub at all. Thanks you for sharing this great how to video 💕😊 P.S. I do however have a limelight that I cut and dry the blooms from. All hydrangeas are my very favorite 😍

You can divide or trim any shrub, just know though that it might interrupt the blooming cycle depending whether they set blooms on old or new wood. General rule....new wood = trim in early Spring before leaf out, or Winter so blooms can set on new wood during the next blooming cycle.. Old wood, transplant or trim right after shrub is finished blooming. The newly grown branches during the remaining season will be considered old wood. Examples: HYDRANGEAS are new wood bloomers, Lilacs are old wood bloomers.

You can also take those cuttings put them in the ground keep moist and they will also root for you. I have done a few like that . they are quite easy to root. take all the leaves off except the 2 top leaves and stick in the Ground just keep them moist. zone 9A Florida.

I have walnut trees that were here when we bought the property. I think thats why we have so many squirrels and chipmunks, they collect the walnuts all day long

@@jesthesinginggardener Thanks for your reply Jes. Black Walnut trees exude a natural herbicide from their roots called Juglone, and which can affects many plants. The effects would show itself as stunted plants, yellowing, partial to total wilting, or even complete death. I know you really take good care of your plants and gardens, and with only quality materials, so I've been wondering why some plants in certain areas in your gardens are strangely struggeling a bit, so when you confirmed you do have Walnut trees, incl. a history of Walnuts on your property, that is the first thing that came to mind. Anyways, hope this helps. Keep on with the good work, your gardens are wonderful!

I dug up and transplanted all of my red and some yellow blooming flowers to their own bed because I felt they clashed with the purple and pink in the areas where they were. The weather was cooler and rainy for two days, so I thought they would be okay, but my Quince Bushes and Crocosmia Lucifer are turning brown. I said, "This never happens to Jes." So sad. ☹

did you cut them back? sometimes it helps, well most times it helps if you cut them back so the roots don't have so much plant to support after a shocking split. But i wouldn't give up. If the roots are good then they might bounce back. PS its does happen to me occasionally so don't feel so bad! Just keep watering them!

I don't use anything to be honest. The only bugs i really have are japanese beetles ever once in a while and i just flick them off or use a soapy water solution if there are lots. I have aphids sometimes but those seem to stick to one host plant so i just leave it be. Sounds like a lot of people deal with bugs and slugs. I deal with more critters like chipmunks and racoons and bunnies.

I dont have issues with too many slugs but people on here have suggested Sluggo. its an organic slug deterrent. Otherwise ive heard coffee grounds or egg shells. Not sure if that works though. I hope they hold on for the wedding!
