Digging trench foundations & finding the sewer

This video shows how we went about digging the trench fill foundations for the side extension - this is a crucial stage in the build process because it involves levelling up the trench foundation with the pad foundation poured the day before.
It is also very important because these trench foundations will hold up the two storey's above it!

Good job...Top tip I've found with manholes is cutting piece of ply to size putting in manhole before work saves any chance of rubble ending up in bottom potentially causing blockage makes easier to clean out rubble muck. Appreciate you were disconnecting old one. Tell builder to wear disposable gloves when putting hands in sewer next time....just trying to be health conscious

Hi, did the building inspector (or engineer) make any comment about the bamboo near your foundations? Can be quite destructive in gardens. I think there are also membrane you can instal at angle to make it grow upwards, making it visible, so it can be trimmed once a year. A neighbour of mine decided to grow some at the far end of my property. Its made a right mess.

Yeah we had a good discussion about that - something which partially gets covered in the one of the future videos is the method we used for dealing with it...We put down a blinding of sand across the whole site, then a 1200 gauge plastic DPM, and then 50mm of vegetation concrete the whole way across, so that nothing can grow up/through it...Sadly I was so busy doing that whole process that I didn't overly film it, only the finished result!

Why pads for the single story rear extension and not your normal foundations all the way around?

Great question! The design was done so that we could build right on the edge of our party wall, without needing to dig and pour concrete on our neighbors land. Pad foundations allow this. In the best case scenario, it works out around the same cost as a standard trench fill, in the worst cast scenario (where you have loads of trees nearby, or the ground is bad and you need to dig now 2m), it can work out considerably cheaper as you're only required to dig down 2m at the pads, because the beams don't change...hope that answers your question.
