1:27:00 Salamence Bagon doesn't "just" headbutt stuff. It is a suicidal overachieving dragonling that legit LEAPS off cliffs because it has a dream/instinct to fly. The head armor is how it survives all those falls. Salamence achieves flight, and thus loses most of the armor (there is a bit on it's underside). Sometimes the point of a weird design can be found on the flavor text. Try reading it a bit more often, might help.

I think Ralts is like the progression of a shy kid into confident adulthood. Also this mirrors Wally's (the gen 3 semi-rival) character progression, whose main pokemon is the Ralts line. - Ralts is a shy recluse kid - Kirlia has opened up through her passion of dancing - Gardevoir is a fully grown, confident adult

1:04:56 -ish. The problem with these still images is that you might miss details about the pokemon visible only in the animations. Cacturne's "not-so-spiky" thorns, for example, are retractable. When it uses them to attack, they extend a lot, and that's cool. Same thing with Swalot. More than a "poison sack" is a "devouring" pokemon. The "cool" factor is that it's mouth opens for pretty much the height of its entire body, and behind there is only darkness. Google it to search for images, it's really creepy. Cool, but creepy.

Oh, come on! The whole Aron line is a 5 and you freaking know it! A lot of the scores for this gen are confusing me. Rating my favorites low, and praising the ones I've always disliked or found forgettable. How dare you have different opinions! But seriously, wtf. And Volbeat and Illumise are both fucking 0s. My favorite gen, and it has the only two Pokemon I actively despise... Also, I really hate the widespread idea that people who like Gen 3 best only do so because it was their first. No. I was around when Pokemon exploded with Gen 1. I instantly fell in love with the show. I cherished the few cards I was able to get. I wanted every Pokemon toy I could find. I was around for the Pikablu days. Pokemon was my shit from day one. I just happened to think Gen 3 was best, though 7 is a strong contender. I've actually grown to like a lot of Gen 1 Pokemon less over the years. It had a lot of great designs, but also a lot of really bad or bland ones. 4 is worst gen, though.

Snowskeeper Ferenczy you may be right, but while I was watching this video there were multiple times I heard them make a comment about a design form this gen that fit easily as well if not better at similar gen 1 and 2 designs, their logic referring to being critical towards what should count as a pokemon and what does or doesn't pass as solid design, especially certain comparisons like "does x pokemon beat y pokemon in design" when x is new ad y is referring to an older version that may or may not have been better, there are definitely at least some cases were those tables could be turned on Older pokemon, and asking if certain older designs stand up to newer ones would be intriguing to see

The thing about Marshtomp is that yeah, he's an awkward puberty stage, but an *endearingly* awkward puberty stage. That's why we love him. Also, in Gen 5, you can catch other gen Pokémon early on, but only in the sequel games, not in the original Black and White. They were post-game exclusive there. Every time someone fucks up the pronunciation of Blazblue, I feel like Ragna. That's almost as bad as the Blazblue anime adaptation. Crawdaunt looks like a dude who just wants to fuck you up. He looks like a total mofo and I like that. Groudon a 3?! He's a *literal fucking Godzilla!* That's cool as shit! Destiny Deoxys is boring bullshit with a meh Rayquaza appearance that couldn't save this boring movie. Also, Digi, you gave 4 1s in Gen 1, 6 in gen 2, and 9 in gen 3. Not an entirely huge leap in 1s, though I'm sure you're giving like...20 1s in gen 4. That one is probably the most hit and miss.

I mean I grew up playing gen 1 and it was amazing but the further away from it I get the more it just feels weak. “It’s a cute turtle, it’s a cute plant, it’s a stupid duck and that’s awesome!” But once there started to be deeper ideas behind the Pokémon they somehow become lame? Gen 3 is what got me back into Pokémon and Aggron on it’s own was half of that.

I feel like a lot of the ratings in these videos would be different if they knew all the design inspirations behind some of them. The Dex, a weekly Pokemon trivia and battle strategy show, has made me appreciate a ton of Pokemon I never cared for before. It made me realize how much thought and creativity goes into Pokemon, and made me appreciate the designs even if I don't like it from a purely aesthetic standpoint. The inspirations for most Pokemon are pretty obvious on a surface level, but so many of them have so much more going on beneath the surface than people realize.
@stealthmissionpath7 жыл бұрын
keybladesrus It doesn't matter. If the artists lack the ability to clearly show the influences of their designs, then there is no point in having an influence in the first place. It just leads to mediocre mons.
@keybladesrus7 жыл бұрын
Well, in many cases, the influences are references to folklore of various cultures, sometimes pretty obscure. The design plays to these influences just fine, it's just that many people don't know the references, so they don't get it. It's not the players' fault; I would hardly expect the average person to know every bit of folklore from every culture. But it's not the designers' fault either. They convey these ideas in often clever ways. It can be really fun to research the design origins for various Pokemon! Most people just don't do that and judge the Pokemon based purely on aesthetics, and that's a completely subjective thing. You can take a single Pokemon and show it to a bunch of people, and some will call it bad, some will call it mediocre, but some will love it. It may be one person's most hated Pokemon, but it could also be someone's favorite Pokemon. For example, I always thought Chinchou was completely "meh" in every way. It was just there. I didn't think there was enough to it to be anyone's favorite Pokemon. Then I watch their Gen 2 ratings, and this girl loses her mind over it. She LOVES Chinchou! And as I said before, there are plenty of Pokemon that I wouldn't have taken a second look at, but after learning about the lore and inspirations behind them, I come to respect them. Like Klefki. So many people give Klefki so much shit for being "just a keychain", but it's actually a clever representation of folklore about mischievous fairies, particularly ones that steal small objects like keys. Klefki is not literally a keychain, it just looks like one when it's holding all the keys that it's collected. Comfey is similar in that it's not literally a lei. It just looks like one with all the flowers it has gathered. It makes flower rings that it gives to people or Pokemon that it cares about, just like how leis are supposed to be used (when not just handed out to tourists because tourists). It's the things like this that make me love Pokemon that made me roll my eyes the first time I saw them.
@terrywalker78367 жыл бұрын
Plus, these are personal ratings. Digi's all about there being no such thing as an objective review, so I think he would admit that learning new stuff would change his opinions, but this is their opinions as of this point in time.
@komarunaegi74607 жыл бұрын
+King Me Shounen I think that's a black and white way to view things. While your perspective holds true in some cases, a lot of these Pokemon that Digi and May don't like at first glance ends up looking more likable in their eyes once they read their PokeDex entries on the site or look closer at the Pokemon. Like Rhyperior, for example - Digi hated Rhyperior's design, especially because of its tail, but once he read the information on it (that the holes in its arms served as Geodude cannons and its tail is like a plug), he changed his mind a bit. And most of the time, with Pokemon, the artists *do* clearly show the influence of their designs very well. Do you expect American players to understand the influence of the designs of Pokemon based off Japanese myths and folklore, for example? A lot of these are also based on specific biological facts on real objects and animals, some of which aren't common knowledge. Hence why +keybladesrus mentioned shows like The Dex. Hell, even looking up Pokemon's inspiration on Bulbapedia or just reading the in-game PokeDex entries from each game usually makes people go, "Oh, wow, I didn't know that, that's actually kind of cool/interesting." Digi thought Tentacool was really cool (no pun intended) even though he had no idea that it was based off a jellyfish (even though it was pretty obvious, like when May mentioned it when Digi thought it just looked like a monster or a hat). Does that make Tentacool a "mediocre mon" in your eyes because Digi couldn't clearly see the influence behind it?

I'm not saying they wouldn't or shouldn't change but that's not what this show is about. They didn't promise to watch every single episode of the dex. They're rating it based on their experience because like I said Digi is all about sharing is perspective and his perspective on the media alone.

Every time they say "I don't get it." I think, "read the pokedex entry. It's right there."
