I always find the "analysis makes me like things less" argument really interesting, because I went through something that was kind of the opposite when I was younger. When I was young I just enjoyed a lot of media, didn't really critique it much or look for that kind of thing, but around age 16 I noticed myself becoming more disappointed with a lot of movies and shows in ways that I wasn't before. I sought a more analytical understanding of media in large part because of this, because I wanted to understand what made the stuff I loved really work and the stuff I didn't like so much fail, at least in my eyes. There was never a moment where seeing something taken apart made me like it less; in fact, as I learned more about what makes stories and shows work I started seeing aspects in my favorite shows that made me love them even more.

I’m finding myself wishing that my English classes were better taught when we got into literary analysis, because now I’m finding shows and stories more interesting when I can dive into the ideas in them. Sure, some shows I love because they are comfy or are hot girls doing sexy things, but even there, I can find reasons that I like some shows more than others.

We can only really pin down an idea or feeling if we have the terminology to describe it. I suppose analytical videos here on KZbin are what made me learn how to view it as such, much more than that literature class I had back in school.

I'm a novelist (written 10 so far) and I read bad novels and screenplays (and watch bad films and tv shows) to learn what "bad" is. I watch "good" stuff to learn what "good" is. The most important novel I have ever read is also the worst novel I have ever read. It's premise is excellent, but its execution is so tragically bad that it literally inspired me to write a better novel when I was 16. It's good to know how to do something, but it's also important to know how not to do something. I'm interested in anime because I love animation, and I'd love to write an animated show or film, though I have written a 22.5-minute pilot.

Not even gonna lie got the warm fuzzies when you mentioned fans that send you letters. Made me realize the hole that has been in my stomach for a bit. I love creating stuff and getting my voice out there. Recently my PC pretty much died and I was pretty much focused solely on not being able to play games with friends. Without taking into account the laundry list of projects I can't work on now. I have an overactive imagination so creating is a way to filter them. I usually fully act out scenes before writing them, just easier that way for me. To me writing a story is often just transcribing something I have already thought through or acted out. I remember through middle school choreographing fights by just imagining myself in the moment and Shadow fight, including throwing myself around. Oftentimes for me my stories were little world's I could escape to, something of a save haven I could occupy my brain with when I was bored or distraught. That's not addressing a plethora of other mediums I spend time working in, my passion is getting my voice out there.
@joemuis236 жыл бұрын
i wonder if digis talks about that imagination with that meaning to create. i tend to not spend much time imagining unless i allow myself to or just thtough putting a pencil on paper and seeing what arises out of that. i used to draw comics a lot to make up for my lacking imagination but now i often just consume since that is often good enough to make up for my minds eye
@zoidsfan126 жыл бұрын
@@joemuis23 ever since I was little I would come up with stories and fights. I can remember not even knowing how to type but wanted to make sure my stories were safe so I would go to my grandma's and type them up. When it comes to drawing I rarely can recreate what I'm seeing in my head. To recreate what I see when coming up with these stories I would need to create and entire VR game. So when I draw often the more satisfying stuff is just letting my pencil go where it wants. Occasionally I am stricken with a Quicksilver drive and spend a whole night laboring over a drawing that looks exactly as imagined.

I feel like it's because anime is a very "small" community. Sure, it's more open and "accepted" now a days, but it's still something a lot people are fond of and they feel the need to communicate with others, perhaps they don't have friends irl who they can share this with and so they use online fandom websites. So I guess it pains them when someone comes out and they start questioning if what they watch was even good to begin with. Not to mention how anime is all about seasonal releases and is now more open to people, as long as they have an internet connection. Meaning they won't think as much about what they consume and won't search lesser known shows because they just want what's in front of them as long as it's good enough and that other people are talking about it online.

i don't like or watch anime but this video and the points you make in it transcend the medium. seems like people rarely focus on the mutual understanding creation brings to communities, and you've well articulated how important that feeling is here. i hope that the line between creator and consumer soon blurs to the point that everyone is contributing to the ever-evolving mass of content just by getting involved in the ways you describe.
@susususu67785 жыл бұрын
It's getting there. I personally don't like the term "consumer", and I feel that our mainstream culture sort of molds us into that role.
@TwentySeventhLetter6 жыл бұрын
I think one version of a peer-to-peer KZbin replacement would emphasize one feature that was removed long ago: Video Responses. Imagine it, if instead of a comment section, there was just the option to record yourself and your thoughts about someone's video, creating a sprawling pyramid of responses and re-responses, with the most popular videos not being acknowledged for view count, but for response count, or length of response chains. This could of course go heinously if the responses got inflammatory or otherwise out of hand, but measures could be taken to mitigate that, measures far more focused around achieving the goal of civil discourse rather than KZbin's bottom line of $$$. Despite the fact that this video didn't end where it began, it still felt like a logical stream of consciousness and I still learned about Why I Watch Bad Anime, I just learned a lot more (like after watching a Vsauce video).
@TwentySeventhLetter6 жыл бұрын
Upon further reflection, I think the core idea that I took away here was that, generally, when I sit through something of subpar quality, it's usually because I'm not watching it as the Creator in me, but often as someone seeking conversation with others _over_ whatever I'm watching. At the end of the day, though, I always find that the Creator's opinion erodes whatever others I happen to form in the short term, because only the Creator's opinion sticks with me and affects how I perceive the world. I can't watch the same bad show twice without realizing how painfully bad it was; it's just like how watching a good show twice makes me appreciate it more, watching a bad show twice makes me despise it more.
@onimaxblade89886 жыл бұрын
I feel the main point of this video is something like this: Go out and be creative, and try and find the shit you like. That's essentially what browsers like these endorse. And that's what you endorse, and what hardcore fans of yours endorse as well, which btw, the way you described your content is pretty perfect to me, bravo. You don't want to watch bad things unless there's nothing better or you want to partake in the buzz around a bad thing. So stop watching the bad things for the former reason and go find the better stuff, and for online stuff, these new browsers help escape the old, limiting systems and platforms.
@mablungbalrog4246 жыл бұрын
I think what I'm getting out of this is distributors, like youtube and crunchyroll, only choose to endorse or show the bad stuff because it makes them money. And to find good content creators we need to look to different and unique sites that are unlike the mainstream and not effected by money but by the sharing of ideas. This is a thickly veiled allegory for "just pirate anime"
@onimaxblade89886 жыл бұрын
@@mablungbalrog424 Oh yeah, true. Some of the video was definitely dedicated to "You need to actively seek out content you enjoy" and... I can relate to that random comment; because of your commentary on A Place Further than the Universe I almost skipped it entirely, but I gave it a change out of boredom and it became one of the best shows I've ever watcher. After that, I understood that it was mostly because, on one hand, yes, the big boob girl was totally a plot convenience for the writers, but I haven't watch so many animes like that that it becomes insuferable. I could let it pass and see what was beyond, and I really loved it. Since then, I watch these analytical videos being aware that Digi is at a very different point from mine. Of course, his arguments make sense and they could be correct, but at the end what set apart the shows we like to the shows we don't is if the bad parts are things that we can let pass trough or just simply deal breakers for us. As you grew older and watch more and more anime, you become much more aware of the tropes of the industry, and so they become less and less tolerable. I am NOT there, I watch probably 5-6 anime per year, some because I think are interesting, but also a few just because the protagonist is cute or whatever silly reason, and is in those cases when I am more aware that what I watch is probably somethin that I could get to dislike, but I simply can pass trough the shitty parts, because... I'm bored, or because I don't look anything in particular from anime sometimes, just mere inoffensive (maybe sometimes a bit indulgent) entertainment.

also great video digi that kinda resolves a personal arc for me. I saw you as an excuse for my lifestyle for a long time after i failed classes in highschool and it made me seek to emulate you. I developed an interest in analysis even though I did feel like you kinda ruined that intense emotional feeling I got through narrative with the spoilers. I went along anyway since I admired you. It did make me more levelheaded in the end but I kinda miss the feels I used to get. But to be honest that could've just been puberty. Fast forward to now I don't cope that well with violence at the moment so I more actively seek out what to watch. This new conundrum has also gotten me to stop viewing well known media as things I shouldn't get spoiled for. (To many fish in the sea and all). Consuming media feels less exciting than it used to but it also feels like I found a new stability through getting thought analysis. I especially thank you for the video on art all being the same but just having a different fetish. That really helped me learn to respect what I like personally and skim the crap.

If you look at the views you'd see that is clearly not true. If you look at the most recent of the generic vlog videos like "Gender Is Irrelevant" "Explaining -Autism!!", and "Fascinated with Bardock Obama's Tactical Drama" those have 25k, 23k, and 41k views respectively. Compared to the 72k subscribers, a lot of people don't just watch whatever comes out on here. Even the Goblin Slayer stuff is at 30k at most. The point of the clickbaity stuff or misleading titles is to draw people in. It needs to draw in the subscribers who don't watch (likely a lot of them are older fans who fell off, or are more casual fans who like the main channel, then subbed to the side channel but don't watch much of it because it doesn't appeal to them), and it needs to draw in the people who aren't subscribed (if this gets posted somewhere it needs to draw those people in, and if it ends up in someone's sidebar it needs to draw them in).

The reasons I watch bad anime: - When I drink, I don't have to worry about not comprehending the show. - I can feel superior to the writers and that's encouraging to me as a writer. - Making fun of bad anime together is a fun pastime for me and my SO. - I don't have to worry about talking over it, missing it, or being interrupted. I know what's happening. - I know what to expect and that's comfortable. - I recognize that not everything I watch has to be a mind bending awesome foray into the dark depths of the universal human unconsciousness, or an exploration of weighty concepts, or a dEcOnStRuCtIoN. In fact I'm much more sick of anime trying to be deep and failing miserably, like say, _Magical_ _Girl_ _Site_ , than an honestly mediocre anime that's not trying to be more than it is and still ending up Ok. - I want dumb entertainment where I don't have to think too hard sometimes, especially when stressed, having depression symptoms, worrying about money, etc. I need distraction and escapism more than I need the intellectual stimulation most people consider to be a critical part of a "good" anime. Don't get me wrong I like good anime too, but for one, the definition of good and bad is so murky, taste is subjective, and sometimes you just want to see panties and cute girls eating bread.

I did not have criteria before. I enjoyed almost everything. One of my favorite animes for several years was SAO, I even have several figures. Everything changed when I discovered that video last year. My friends did not react similar to me, they were with that attitude of "no fucking idea, is a hater, etc etc" against Digi. But it affected me a lot, I found it fascinating. That something that seemed so great to me had so many gaps to the point that it could be pulverized into a well-argued speech of an hour ... Suddenly I became very interested in the criticism and for a few weeks I explored youtube in very intense ways. It was no longer a place to see gameplays, it was a portal to another world (unintentional joke). Eventually, as I assimilated what I learned on KZbin, I consider that I started to gain a lot of criteria. And from then until today most of the animes that I had liked always stopped liking me. On the other hand, I discovered an inconceivable amount of new and varied animes that I am passionate about and that I probably would never have known if I had not been actively interested in "looking for the best". Yes, now I enjoy many less animes. But the ones I enjoy practically I love them. It is certainly worth.

i try to talk to people about why i don't like or why i do like or what i liked about a series and what i didn't like to people on the internet and i always get the impression that my opinions come off as toxic and aggressive or just hate speech or like fanboyish cause i complain or praise with my heart and mind, i have experienced a thing, i am not a professional critique but this is how i feel. I like Digi's content cause i feel when he leans one way or another on something that he's genuinely honest and he doesn't play up his opinions for the camera or at least that's my interpretation in a sense that the way we interpret things effects our enjoyment of something, like why i like Berserk over Goblin Slayer, it's not cause one is visually or sounds best then the other but rather that the themes portrayed were handled better and helped add not only to the atmosphere of the world but also the characters within, when something bad happens to Guts, it effects him for the whole story, when something happens in GS it is either instantly remedied or just gotten over once a source of comfort comes along, never effecting the characters or setting. Calling your series Goblin Slayer vs Goblins really limits what we'll see, cause with a title like that it tell the viewer you're gonna see a lot of goblins, yet we know the only reason goblins are still around is cause no high ranking mercenaries care about dealing with them, not because they're actually any real threat, the rape and gore and lose of people due to goblins only happens cause one man cares to do something about them and in show called Goblin Slayer vs Goblins you should make the main thing the guy fights an actual threat if your gonna keep reminding us, but they don't gore or rape anyone with actual skill. GS IS WAILED ON AND PINNED BY GOBLINS FOR A GOOD MINUTE AND THEY DON"T GORE OR RAPE HIM!!! Now Berserk, the title doesn't tell you what Guts will encounter it just gives off the impression that shit will hit the fan fast, at first we start with simple wars against humans and that's chaos and death and carnage enough to pull you in, we see what that alone does to Guts... then demons show up and they body all the humans and Guts despite all his worked for strength, so when he is left alive to ponder the betrayal of Griffith and the deaths of the Band of the Hawk swearing revenge, his crusade against the demons feels earned and genuine, it's not from a hatred of the demons but rather fueled by his betrayal at the hands of a man he trusted and cared an issue Guts has had with all of the men that are close to him in his life, Guts struggles and gives a lot to gain the skill needed to challenge literal demon gods, i have spent enough time in this man's shoes so i can understand when and why he would be angry enough to fight the monsters, you gave me enough to pull me in and a good pay off to stay, i want Guts to win. idk other animes to compare GS, i don't tend to watch that style of anime i just hate when mature themes are only incorporate cause you want to darken the tone, you didn't do anything to earn the tone in GS you just had noise and gore and violence against women cause it's the middle ages man shit be kray!!!... you could've done so much more! (i'm a nerd sorry D:)

The P2P is really interesting. As an artist who has tried to break 100 followers on Instagram and Twitter for 2 years without doing a ton of fan art or any tutorials, let me tell you - it's HARD and next to impossible. I'm shifting over to KZbin, but I don't even know if it's worth it half the time between the oversaturation of artists plus the fact that YT is practically a sinking ship. I'm considering doing a bunch of fan art close to the holidays to attract more people. It's not that I think it's some compromise of integrity or whatever, I just don't want to waste time on fan art.

The first thing I would worry about is the security risk which is something P to P is prone to. So unless the security is robust enough to prevent a bad actor from messing with stuff it will take a bit to make it workable.

I stopped watching anime around 5 months now. I simply noticed that I was enjoying it less and less the more I was watching (Probably because of how formulaic it is compared to other forms of media), and I wasn't really big on analyzing it or discussing it. But even then, I still watch your videos. Because even if I don't share the passion that you have when discussing, but I respect it, and this video was all I wanted to hear. People should really stop trying to get into something because of the community or the mass appeal it has, and rather they should try and just enjoy a show for what it is, because if you just do it just to talk about it, what will happen with amazing, but niche series? Will you miss on it because your group of friends isn't big on it or it doesn't makes your karma go up on Reddit? This also applies to the companies that try to promote new IPs using the “From the creators of [Famous show]". Let it stand its ground by its own merits dang it. Media is a business, I know, but whenever I see amazing creators doing things much better than a cookie-cutter KZbinr with boobs on the thumbnail. Anyway, I would really like hearing your “psicological blasts" you say you have. You really are the Digi *Bro* after the dark.

It's something like this that really underlines how people really don't consume media in even close to the same way... I like world building but in somewhat narrow way I like society building, for example the reason i liked the Goblin slayer manga was because it's a somewhat different look into the basic DnD type fantasy world "why are goblins universally hated?" "What causes the human society to both hate them, yet let them exist?" and other things like that, obviously it's not great at exploring these things but it's decent enough. Another example is Steven Universe, the entire thing is mostly tedious to me, I don't really care about the main caste or their conflict with Homeworld... but Gem society as whole, how it works, what causes gems that are obviously manufactured for a very precise end goal to still seek the freedom they do. Are the crystal gems really free from that or do in reality still follow their directives. Those question and the possibility that interesting answers exists to them is what kept me watching it. These reasons you express here are frankly almost alien to me, and that's somewhat interesting in itself. As for the second half of the video... it's like the 4th time you talk about that in pretty much the same terms, but I think vision driven media will always be niche unless you hit a perfect mix of mostly lucky circumstances that carry the vision to greatness, on the other side average paint by number media has statisticaly better chance of being a success but almost no chance of being "great" or "a masterpiece"

Of course here’s the knee jerk reaction: I watch some bad anime bc one small part of it is engaging enough for my imagination to make something fun out of it. I’ve definitely made my fair share of fanart for shit I’d never bother to finish, because there’s a potential in the beginning that’s not going to be fulfilled. Definitely connected to why I consume so much fanfiction. On another note I’ve never really been keen on connecting with artists I enjoy? I basically have never seen photos of the people who make music I’ll loop for seven hours, and I don’t feel at all able to glean what kind of person the person who writes my favorite stories is. I connect with some things on a personal level but it feels strange to assume that experience of mine even falls close to what the creator was feeling or trying to communicate. I think this view has helped me in some ways but recently I’ve been running into some problems with my art in that when I show a piece to people I just want them to talk on their own about their impressions. I resist the idea of explaining things that viewers could interpret in a totally different way if I just let them do their thing. For that reason I feel uncomfortable talking about it, and it leaves them without a jumping off point. I don’t want to impose my interpretation on them but if they don’t have any context there are too many interpretations for them to communicate anything concretely about it, even if in the first place I don’t feel like I’m making anything that complicated. The question here is: do I engage more to get more engagement back now, use that to inform my direction, or do I keep doing what I’m doing until hopefully I’m making things that engages people just because it’s good when you look at it. end of rambles

A wise man once said, "Too often do we forget that stories are told to raise questions, not to tell us what to think." I would add that that is true of art as a whole regardless of medium, that the quality of questions raised define the quality of the art, and that any work that, in place of supporting this notion, actively champions against it is no art at all. Addendum: at least in my interpretation, the art does not ask the questions. It exists, and creates a scenario of which questions may be asked.

I'm curious Digi on what type of art you do want to see? Are you wanting more short films, experimental music/music videos, VR video stuff? I know you have gotten tired of analysis videos, but is it the that type of content in general or just how it's presented? Are you looking for people to make more horseshoe saga type of analysis where it's more personal and niche? I'm honestly curious what type of art you are wanting to see? I watched your halo livestream and love the idea you presented of a avatar discord like chatroom where you can view someones full collection right there. I want that to exist. Yes, recently I also realized that by watching anime critique videos etc, that it's somehow destroying or at least reducing the amount of anime I'd watch. Seriously, If I had watched for example Princess Mononoke after watching the trailer, it would be only half as amazing. It's all about the experience. I have to discover an anime for myself, because I'm a discoverer type. I guess there are some connections with the Bartle taxonomy of player types there. (Achievers, Explorers, Socializers, and Killers) About the other thing: I consider myself as a creator (I mean I'm trying to animate my own anime and more), but I feel no connection to the animators or anyone in the anime production industry. For me it's about art and a way to find people with similar taste, interests and compatible personalites. In a nutshell: Find and connect with people who are on the same wavelenght as me :^)

I have never had someone sum up my taste in anime so quickly as Digi did in the first 10 minutes, some anime I just find boring and I’m tempted to believe it’s because of a lack of interest on the creators side. I’ve recently started drawing and I’m have tons of fun doing so, maybe this is what the creators of anime(s?) feel like. P.S. All of my KZbin stuff is basically garbage, it’s just me messing around in a crappy mobile game so don’t check any of it out.

Corporations will chase profits. When profits are your aim everything you look at gets reduced to a consideration of an audiences tastes and how that can be used to get them to buy your product. But corporations don’t consider an audiences actual tastes, what they pay attention to are only the aesthetics of things which people like. Corporations will constantly try to make the loudest, brightest, most surface level attractive media for the smallest possible cost. Generally the easiest and the cheapest way to attract people to buy your product is to sell them something which looks like something they already have a connection with. This could be anything with a nostalgic value, or anything which in some way attracted an audience to buy before and can on the back of its own reputation attract people to buy again. This is why sequals are ususlly so bad, why nostalgia of all kinds is so prevalent, and why so many franchises are reborn, rebooted, and resold, over, over, and over again. However, people return to nostalgia and to things that they like because there was substance in them, and so do artists, which is why we will always come back. But, business seems to holds all the cards, almost nothing can be made without them, and they get to make the decisions most of the time. It’s only by accident, great skill, and occasionally reputation, that artists working under a corporation manage to make anything. And, unfortunately it is only from places of relative solace and peace that people are able to relate to art and enjoy culture without it merely being a way to relax after the 9-5 jobs they work which drain them of every ounce of energy they have before they get home. People don’t want hollow superficial art, but what people are is exhausted, worried about their rent, their debts, an overdue power bill, relationships, etc. Its telling that most people consider work a sacrifice of their life so that they can live in their free time. But, work doesn’t end when their day of work ends, it follows them everywhere and hangs over their head sometimes literally as a threat to their lives if they don’t give it their full attention. Most people are in situations like this. So generally, most people see any culture that brings a quality to their lives that is greater than their usually quality of life as enjoyable, even if that art or media is meaningless and totally superficial, chances are it will bring some joy. Unfortunately compared to things which bring simple joy or just take up time without much investment or thought from us, any art or culture that takes up too much time and energy to enjoy actually becomes painful. This is because art that demands allot take time and energy takes away that time and energy from the work people need to do to survive and keep mentally stable. Although, since art is not a luxury we will always go looking for it even if its painful. We always want to understand ourselves and the world. We need meaning. Not all people are exactly like this of course, but people sit on a spectrum depending on their situation. This is what the general trend looks like, what the general situation is for both makers of art and people who enjoy it.

I think that a lot of what can be misconstrued from a person's art is when people look at it on the base level. For an example in the literal sense, you can take manga or comics that are considered uninspired because all they seen was the artist's handiwork, and not the choices they made in making the work. As a person interested in drawing and taken some classes in the subject, there is a very large disconnect in how people draw something and why they drew it. The largest example I can find of this would be the Order of the Stick webcomic, because, critically, the artstyle is kinda trash, especially in the earlier days when Rich Burlew was thinking of simple one-shot comics and not an overarching story. But Rich is a good artist (he claims, I googled some stuff up, but I'm still up in the air whether his non-stick-figure style is really that good), and the stick-figure style is an active choice he made while making the comic because it fits the adventure-comedy mood (and somehow he manages to add heart-wrenching and terrifying moments in a god-damn *stick-figure* webcomic). I define an artist's art style as the active choices one makes while making art. I choose to define it this way because if I didn't, then that would mean that talent and luck can define someone's art more than the important choices they made while making it, and that leads into a completely different discussion on how we view free will. Bob Ross chose to place a happy little tree next to that lake, and chose to give it a little friend. Bob Ross has a defined style because he can make choices on the artwork he makes. A lot of good anime is littered with these choices that define their style, and if you don't understand that they actively made the choices in the first place, a lot of the effect of their art just doesn't work. The reason that Steven Universe's character designs suck complete ass is because when you look at the "artstyle" it's like they were just copying down "Cartoon Basics 101: Western Animation", and the fact that they had guest animators and would constantly "reference" shots from popular anime and manga only cements the fact that the people working behind it have no style. The artists made very little choices in how they made the show, they just went through the motions in what they learned at whatever college they went to. The same goes with High Guardian Spice, no style, just the same clutter in the background and simple designs so that they don't have to worry about animating somebody too much. Contrast to Phineas and Pherb, and then you have the reason why that show's style was much better. When they were looking for designs, somebody said, "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if this guy's head should be a giant fucking triangle, and this guy is just a rectangle with a nose?" Every character design is distinctly shaped and it looks like somebody actually sat down and said "I am going to put style into this character." What I get tired of people saying about art is how good it is, even when it is surprisingly generic. Most fantasy designs nowadays either go for "World of Warcraft goofiness with spikes and everything making it look like we care about detail on our designs" or "Game of Thrones: because if we look realistic, it means our story is better than most other fantasy stuff, because why not". Very rarely do I see some good fantasy designs now because they all look like the same, with either heavy realism or details that mean nothing in the long run. Nothing is interesting about a protagonist with a magical sword because swords have been done to death. Where is my hero with an old rusty halberd, dammit! That people don't understand that an art style consists of more than just a person jotting down ink on paper and more like the active choices that were made when making the picture pisses me off to no end. And now I am at the end of this comment, realizing that all of this has been said before on Digi's Kill la Kill video about Harime Nui. Fuck me.

You talked as if youtube was much better before google took it over. I've been on youtube since 2006 and i can confirm that the only thing that has changed is the fact people can now make money from making videos. The problem is that content creators want to make money from their content now rather than just doing it because they love it and this discourages a lot from creating content due to competition. Video games for the longest time have had modders tweak their favorite games with added flavor and shared it with players. But now i'm seeing modders ask for money more and more these days and many modders will even complain and quit if they don't get donations. Seems like the real problem is that people care too much about making money and the genuine creators are fading from this world.
