as an animator i will tell you that doing theses little things in the traditional way costs a lot of paper. Not just for frame rate, but to get them RGITH as the storyboard intends, I have the most respect for the evangelion animation directors

That's not true, they didn't run out of budget, biggest problem is that they had to rush them to get them, because everything got fucked up for 2 reasons, the show was very violent, so their budget was cut by little(this is also why it got moved from children's timeslot to a late night time), also they had to change the story at the last moments, because it was too similar to the gas attack at tokyo subway from some CRAZY DOOMSDAY CULT(sounds familiar?-basically Selee), the original ending was similar to Nadia and Castle In The Sky.

what I love the most on this subject? Rei's body language. She's called "emotionless," but these episodes both show & tell you that she is anything but. Apathy is not proof of lack of emotion. it can be the complete opposite. after the "Blackout" battle, I noticed something having seen the show, read the manga, and watched the movies COUNTLESSLY over 16 years: I loved Rei's smile way more from the series. it looked a bit goofy, and far more like a happy young girl. Sadamoto adulted her up for the same scene in the manga, and 1.11 clearly reanimated based on that. she looks more like Yui than her own person there. Then, when she and Gendo are talking, you notice she girlishly skips down from the entry plug, arms out from her sides. until that point, we've never really seen her whole body move in concord with her emotional state. when Asuka shows up and starts messing with the pilot dynamic, we see Rei visibly angry/annoyed (moving her book from under Asuka's shadow). we were able to register Rei's disapproval when she sees Shinji with his father's glasses on, as well as when she slapped him. however, this scene was a direct personal slight. Gendo had nothing to do with it. during the "catching the Angel" sequence, you can also see the difference in each characters' personalities, captured by how the Evas run. Units 01 and 02 moved swift and sleek... you might even call it "masculine." on the other hand, Unit-00 takes off sloppily, and runs somewhat daintily, the way you'd imagine a somewhat unathletic young girl forced to run track in Gym class (changed slightly in 2.22). calling back to the episode "Rei I," she cuts an imposing figure marching right up to Shinji while naked. Rei also (highlighted by the camera) holds up Gendo's glasses while falling, considering their safety above her own. Finally, when the Spider-Angel shows up, Shinji and Asuka fall out of the ventilation, and Rei lands atop them, perfectly poised as if sticking a Gymnast's landing.

Virjunior I don't like the manga very much. But yeah, Rei 2 was definitely a great character there. The manga ruins Asuka and Kaworu as characters, but does a good job of humanizing Rei and Kaji. Frankly speaking, manga Asuka should have died rather than anime Asuka, as she is simply a horrible person in manga. And it looked like Rei and Shinji actually had a romantic relationship.

I believe the best acting moment in Evangelion is when Asuka and Shinji have their kiss in their apartment, the amount of subtle feelings being shows is really amazing, and it becomes an even better scene when it reappears in The End of Evangelion

It's amazing the way animators can create their own actors. They've studied years of expression both academically and just in normal life. Evangelion just exudes real life experience to me, like Cowboy bebop. It nails so many different age ranges and personality types.

Man I must say I watched the series like 3 times before noticing that "I'm sleeping with your dad" look that she gave. It shocked the heck out of me yesterday when I watched the episode. I used to feel that the relationship there was only thrown in at the end awkwardly, but no it was just super well hidden right in front of us...

She wasn't necessarily sleeping with Gendo, but one of the main points of Rei is that she is the manifestation of Shinji's oedipus complex, just like Misato.

I hope that you mention the connection between Rei and the moon in the next episode, since it is really interesting. Rei is associated with the recurring visual motif of the Moon throughout the entire series. In fact, the Moon is rarely shown in Neon Genesis Evangelion without Rei in the foreground (Rei stands in front of the moon in the opening, episode 6 and 10, in episode 25 Rei sits inside a Moon-like spotlight, and the ending song ''fly me to the moon features Rei and the Moon together). this is done to foreshadow the fact that Rei is sharing a common soul with Lilith (also Lilith's mask looks like the moons surface). And it pays off in the end of evangelion where rei and Lilith merge and rise the black moon out of the earth, but there is more to it than just foreshadowing. Asuka seems to have a conection to the sun (she is introduced silhouetted against the Sun, in episode 24 when Asuka is sitting in the bathtub, we see the sun, in episode 25 Asuka is sitting in a Sun-like spotlight, contrasting with the Moon-like spotlight that Rei is sitting in, in episode 09, Asuka harasses Rei by standing in front of the sun, blocking her light while she reads her book and Asuka reaches upwards towards the Sun before she dies) . I think this is done to contrast Rei with Asuka. Asuka has a fiery personalyty, blue eyes and red hair, while rei has a cold personality, red eyes and blue hair. Also the moon has a patent connection to the menstrual cycle, and that is another difference between Rei and Asuka, since Asuka has trouble with her periods, while Rei seems to lack periods entirely, either because of the meds she takes or because she is not a normal human. ps. I think that the scene where Gendo saves Rei after the unit 0 goes berserk, has a darker side to it. Basically Gendo wants Rei to trust and obey him since she is needed for his master plan, but it takes a lot of time and effort to build up trust with new rei clones (that is why gendo protects rei so much). So Gendo saving Rei was just a part of his plan to make Rei trust and admire him (that bastard). and finally, i found an interesting interpretation of Rei on tvtropes: Rei, despite being sort-of part Angel, is still a human. A human who can't really express herself well, as seen from her reaction of not knowing how to react to Shinji crying after the Ramiel battle. Everyone believes that she is emotionless just because she can't show how she feels. But she is human, and she DOES feel emotions. Every single fucked up thing she has seen in her life, from the Angels and the EVAs, Lilith, the mindless clones of herself floating in LCL she experienced it as human, with emotions. In her mind she could have been as batshit freaked out or disturbed by all of it and you wouldn't even know it. This is more scary if you think about it literally, since no one can tell what she's feeling, they won't know how to act toward Rei, and even if Rei is scared out of her mind she is never going to get the comfort she needs. I dont know how accurate it is, but it is an interesting and somewhat scary possibility, and it ties in with the overall theme of: lack of communication. im eagerly awaiting for more of your evangelion analysis videos, they have been so much fun....

Actually, since she is human but doesn't have a soul on her own, i think of Rei as an animal. She expresses gratitude towards his master (in this case Gendo), she eats, breath, and does things normal living beings do, but she can't really think like a human. Rei is basically a dog.

Great video. Though I think you got one thing wrong: Unit 00 was aiming for Ritsuko specifically and mistook her for her mom, Naoko. Since Unit 00 contains the previous Rei that was strangled to death.. There's quite a bit of evidence for this, even in this episode. This becomes more evident later though.

My favorite character building moment in the series is in Episode 18 when Asuka is hit by the light beam. First her stubbornness is shown when she says " I would rather die than retreat!" and after that we have a very insightful moment when we get to see her Memories. The most important statement in this seen is "this is not the real me!" with this Asuka admits that most of her behavior was just a facade to hide her true self, witch is a lot more vulnerable than she made everyone believe.

I can't think of a favorite character acting moment off the top of my head, but I do genuinely wish that more animes did stuff like this. It feels like just about any old story can get adapted into a 13 episode series these days, and none of the animators take the time to give the characters any unique character traits in terms of body language :(
@Zefo_No

Lori P That's why Gainax were so special, they put a lot of thought and soul into *each motion. You can actually find a lot more shows with interesting character animation mowadays, like in ep 1 of Nozaki-kun, or a lot more flashy, in SHAFT shows. Though it's more because of Haruhi than Eva, since that also had a lot of sublime, specific character motions but, also made the whole thing "moe". *in time i found out that some of my favorite atmosphere and character building scenes from the show simply exist because they were extending a frame to cut corners. Like Toji playing basketball, holding Kaoru, the elevator scene, talking with the character's mouth below the screen or covered (became a animation style later on), sitting motionless with heavy industrial noise in the background, that i thought represented inner turmoil and external emotional pressure, and so on...

+Zefo No I think that would be a good example of "throw it in", or just how sometimes limitations can help. I don't take anything about Evangelion for granted, it may or may not be subtlety or a happy accident, but there definetely is a lot of care and cool concepts in the history.

This video does a good job of explaining how important directing can be in engaging the audience. I'm convinced now that what keeps me interested in any cinematic work is not what it's about, but how it's portrayed (ie the cinematography, the acting, the soundtrack).

The viewer is just as shocked and intrigued by Gendo actually expressing emotions as Shinji is, after all, this is a man who doesn't seem to care one iota about his own son, so any display of seeming affection for someone who should matter even _less_ to him immediately creates massive confusion and burning curiosity in a new viewer. Especially so, due to other contradictions as well, such as how in Episode 1, Gendo doesn't seem to care much about Rei living or dying _there_, since she's clearly grievously injured and in no shape to fight a giant monster but he's fully prepared to send her to do that anyway. Also, when Shinji sees Rei and Gendo talking and smiling at each other, this is the classic "Rear Window" trope, where an outside observer is fooled into interpreting something he/she sees from afar completely inaccurately. These contradictions and other little clues such as sidelong glances by Ritsuko, or explanations that she gives that kind of trail off or create more questions than they answer, suspicious looks from Misato revealing that NERV is a place of secrets within secrets, and the fact that Shinji is established as an easily manipulated character (as well as a child, the literal embodiment of naivete, innocence, and ignorance), send a message to the viewer that all may not be as it seems, and that we're going to be left to piece together the answers on our own from reading between the lines. This atmosphere is masterfully concocted in the first few episodes of the series with dozens of little touches, and indeed the SETUP for the intrigue in the series is so brilliant and powerful that it leads to an inevitable letdown for many viewers when they reach the end of the series and it doesn't fit together or pay off as amazingly as you expected based on the setup, and you then find out that Anno was trolling everyone all along. Asshole. But while I do have a lot of problems with the pay offs in the series, the setup is an amazing work of art that is worth breaking down like you're doing so well Digi, and there's so much to appreciate and learn from it.

One thing stood out to me from this review. I've learned from Eva and, generally life before it, to add little background and character details, like facial expressions and mannerisms to "bring a scene to life" as you said but, at 1:25 you said "... silent, awkward characters... the only way to get us into their heads is to express their personality and emotions non-verbally...". Made me think that I've been too one track minded in characterizations. This trait works very well for, let's say awkward characters but, for a character that IS very good at verbally conveying emotions, it could be more interesting if they don't express anything physically during interactions. Despite my tendency towards visually constructing a story. This character would be singularly driven by the conversation (?), either because they instinctively desire to be very honest, or intensely want to sell their fabricated ideals. Relatability is a big part of what made this show stick with people for so long. I still mostly relate to Shinji and Rei, as i did 10 years ago when watching Eva. To people like them, even basic ideas like, a person being more relaxed and direct if they're social and honest might not occur until confronted with someone else' perspective. But like with Shinji in episode 3, the realization still comes out from within. Thank you for your perspective, keep at it!

Romano Coombs Yes they have but, the preferred character representation, at least for the 3 children (the main characters) is that they are the 3 parts of the Id, ego and super-ego model. All are characters in their own right but, they work best as people when clashing together. The 4th main character, Misato shows traits of all 3 psyche models throughout her life, thus being a fully realized person.

Here's where I personally think NGE peaked, episodes 5 and 6. I found the plot to go in a fairly straightforward, sensible direction for these episodes, and the character interactions, specifically between Shinji and Rei, were pretty enjoyable, and through their experiences, their relationship actually changed in a way that reflected what was going on. It was noticeable, meaningful character development that left Shinji and Rei with a better understanding of each other, and for Shinji, it represented him finding someone who was going through the same thing he was, and having that shared experience to identify with. Boy, if only the show had taken a different direction after these episodes.

Something funny about how I experienced NGE for the first time. It was not aired one episode at a time where I live but rather in several big sessions of 6 episodes or so. The end of episode 6 was the first break for me. All openings and endings in between were cut out, so you really only got the content of the episodes strung together. Maybe NGE works especially well for binging on it like this, but back then I was not certain where each episode begins/ends. After all the narrative is very slice-of-life-esque. Still loving this series.

I only just re-watched that episode today, and I thought Rei's interest for Gendo might have existed before the incident. However, your theory does have a lot of merit to it and something I never thought before. I am celebrating the show's anniversary by watching each episode on the date they first aired, and then writing my thoughts on each one (though not as in-depth as yours. I really don't think I got the skills needed). Great video as usual. One thing you should do Digibro, is make a video on why you think we are still discussing and even discovering new things about this series almost 20 years after it released. I find it amazing to be honest

I always thought the Unit 00 going crazy had something to do with it still being a prototype made from Adam with the soul of Lilith being the one controlling it, as if it's difficult for those two to sync.

I think my favorite scene that they portray a lot of emotion through is in the alternate episode 26 when they are all inside of each other's minds but instead of them overcoming their faults at the end they are all attacking Shinji. This ultimately culminates in Shinji doing something he has never done before, he snaps and in angry retaliation he starts strangling Asuka.

I sure hope Digibro does an analysis for End of Evangelion, that would be absolutely amazing. It might be difficult to do an analysis on a whole movie, so even if it were split into parts that would be fine too.

I so totally monstrously agree with Misato's point of view that if Shinji says nothing like that it's like the same thing as asking the others to pay attention to him.

To this day, no anime series has made me feel like I'm watching real people or at least a live action show with real actors, like Evangelion has. I think my favourite "acting" scene in the series is when Misato hears Kaji's final message on her answering machine and her reaction to it.

This show really grounded you in real life by including all the little trivial details about daily life that make them feel like real people. They eat, shower, fidgit, need coffee to get started, interrupt each other, have little things in their homes that don't need to be there but add atmosphere and detail about their lives, and more. It was not a perfect anime by far, but when it got things right, it got them very right. Objects move with mass, characters move realistically and react as you'd expect (and when they don't, it immediately signals something is up). All this from a 1995 work. Amazing.

When I first watched the series some thirteen years ago, I would say that I felt more connected to both Rei and Shinji. Rei, who wanted to please Gendo, was sort of how I was. There were people in my life at the time that I wanted to please, and like Shinji, I would go along with what others would say without much complaining. Skip ahead to now I fill slightly more connected to Shinji after future episodes, but for the sake of your question, I would have to lean more towards Risuko (Sp?) because of my enjoyment in what I do and what I find interesting in the world. I'm not really looking at people and hiding my feelings or desires from them, as I normally don't have those sorts of thing to cloud my mind when at work. I enjoy what I do and on some level, despite never seeing her house, feel that she is someone more closely to whom I can relate simply based on the fact that she seems like the kind of person that would keep a house as neat as she needs it, rather than totally clean like how Shinji would want it or a clustered mess like how Misato has it.

I don't have much to say, I subbed ya back when you were keen on season 2 ponies and kinda didn't watch most of your content after your main channel went dark. I went to links when you talked about bakamotogari and eva, and I see what i first subscribed to. I don't want to call it a clear mind, but an analytical look at what i already enjoy seem fine. Keep on keeping on! I enjoy your work, though i can't afford committing to patreon. If you're up for it, toss out some more headcannons. I'm pretty sure those would be entertaining enough.

+Paul Staker That's a good one. Watching the episode that comes before the Angel infects the EVA is quite unnerving knowing what will happen next. The last time I watched that Toji seemed to be kind of distracted through all the episode, like he was considering inside his mind to take the chance to pilot. But then again, I think there is a scene where they specifically show Toji accepting the deal. I don't even know what I'm talking about.

The fact that Rei uses shoes beyond the "slipper boundary" got to me. The Japanese highly value the life of cleanliness, and this one detail immediately sets the tone of how derailed rei's values are compared to other people.

The entire series is based on the workings of a non human class of beings who were the creators of both Adam and Lily. the cosmic "egg" of each being left on a planet u o induce an evolutionary imperative. It would have been nice to see some mention of these in at least one of the many cuts and rebuilds.
