@awetpaperbag92677 жыл бұрын
GoingGh0st Some people just think digital art is somehow easier or lazier, and while ctrl-z and transform tool are handy, it's obviously still demanding to make a good piece digitally as much as traditionally. Though a much more valid complaint I could imagine is most background art, which is now done digitally, looks all very clean and a boaring gradient infront. In other words they look too samey and boring. However the Bakemonogatari series has very distinct digital backgrounds.

People love boring stuff because nothing happens in boring stuff requires effort to understand. People don't feel like being outsmarted by artists. That's why stupid things can often get insanely popular. The viewers can get cheap reassurance from shit shows. They are heroes of TV animation today.
@KnightofChaosDeck8 жыл бұрын
I'll say. Kill La Kill showed just how easy it was to merge genres that seemingly could not be merged like hardcore shonuen and magical girl. It showed that how easily you could make a female oriented show and have it appeal to both men and women. It showed that fanservice wasn't just limited to women and that men can get just as or even more fanservice-y than women. And it showed that fanservice can have importance in a story, both plot wise and theme wise.
@KnightofChaosDeck8 жыл бұрын
***** Maybe. Or maybe you have too little faith in the anime community as after the hype for SAO vanished, people began realizing the show's flaws and mistakes. Even after the hype has died down for Kill La Kill, people are still calling a great anime with a lot of people trying to pass off bullshit reasons to dislike Kill La Kill like "To much fanservice" or "Shitty animation" being the majority of it's critics.

I like KLK, and fully agree that its animation is leagues better than the generic crap that everybody seems to praise. However, I will admit that KLK is not without faults. The first half of the series is great. It's this silly, tongue-in-cheek sort of humor that is poking fun at generic, shonen/seinen anime and manga. They jammed it full of all these silly anime tropes and it's very clearly satirical. But then, it slowly transforms into the very thing it was making fun of. By the second half of the anime, the plot suddenly becomes super serious. These tropes and cliches that were previously satirical start feeling like they're taken very seriously. The anime became the very thing it was initially making fun of.
@syintigs55435 жыл бұрын
@@spartan456 What do you mean the show got serious? They were literally fighting a bunch of clothes that were attached to a large yarn barn that was going to cover the world and explode it. Tonally, it might appear to be serious. But its the same show, and I think it was even better because it added another layer of depth to by having such a silly and fun plot hidden underneath the facade of the serious mood. It's still a parody with that added satirical element of seriousness to contrast the absurd line of events. What better way to do this other than conjoining it with tropes and cliches, and making fun of it by demonstrating the ridiculousness of the plot in which it is attached to. It's very akin to deadpan humor. There are more than one way of maintaining its place as a parody, and the show would get very boring if it was just like the first half the whole way through. It's more subliminal than the first half, but it's still Kill La Kill.

KLK's character named Gamagori has one very interesting feature to his character: on every shot that he's in his size is always bigger than that of anyone else in the frame. He grows in size the more people they are in the shot, sometimes becoming a size of a house. It's supposed to be a metaphor to his strong-willed character when he's always stronger than anyone else, if not in power than at least in ego. I always loved that fact. People can criticize KLK all they want but i genuinely enjoyed the show, ESPECIALLY the awesome animation. It's a candy for eye, in all meanings of it.

If there's one thing I got from Kill La Kill was exagerration. Not because it was over the top but due to the animators knew that not everyone viewing the anime was going to get subtle hints and they wanted everyone to be in the loop and not feel left out when something big was revealed. They could've easily dumbed it down so everyone could get it but they didn't and they did it spectacularly and in an enjoyable way. Kudos to Trigger.
@DarthRayj4 жыл бұрын
I feel like Symphogear does a similar thing, if not quite to the same exaggerated level. The characters and scenes basically take all the best parts of the anime styles they come from and crank them up to eleven, but somehow it still works together. If you've never seen a lesbian magical girl scifi anime with surprisingly dark tones hidden under the unrelentingly optimistic protagonist, with everyone singing while they fight, you should really watch at least the first season. The second improves on the first in most aspects, and it escalates from there.

@cactuschef38 жыл бұрын
kill la kill was always one of those shows that was very popular but also very popular to hate on, for imo all the wrong reasons. the animation as explained in this video being one of the big three, the other two being the fanservice and the show being "edgy" I think the fanservice criticism is silly because it's clearly played for laughs at the beginning. later it becomes an actual important part of the story, and by the end it's become so much of a non-issue that it's more interesting to look at the tiny bits of skin that ARE covered than the huge swaths that aren't. when you get to the end and virtually the entire cast is lying in a giant pile completely nude i think the last thing you're expected to feel is titillated the edgy complaint I always found hilarious because it only looks edgy if you take one glance and then forget about it. oh, black and red, there's blood, a sword, a dead father. okay that sounds pretty edgy, if you turn it off right there and don't get to the blood spraying out in implausibly goofy fountains, or the power of friendship delivered in batshit insane visual puns, all the bits about adopted family, or satan incarnate with a fluffy pink dress and parasol. like the vid said, it seems like alot of the shows major detractors just seem to be missing the point. if you don't like what the show is trying to do, then cool, but i feel like alot of people who rag on it think it's trying to do something else entirely.

I absolutely LOVED the animation for Kill la Kill, and for the record, I first saw it in my ANIMATION CLASS, because my lecturer decided it was one of the best examples of modern animation to make it onto TV (alongside Madoka Magica but that's a whole other story). Like if you actually went and looked up all the animation styles used in this anime, you'd be blown away. From classic western to modern CGI to motion graphics, all combined into one style along with lovely background art which looks to be oil paintings? You literally have no idea how much work would have to be done. The timing in EVERY single scene was also on point, and believe me getting timing right in editing is HELL, especially with as many sounds and effects as they used. It was meant to be a nod to the humor of classic cartoons, as well as the style of modern anime. Also, in case some haven't noticed, there is a different set of animation for every single character in here. For example, Mako literally has multiple ridiculous, cartoonish sequences, but for Satsuki every scene she is in she's serious as heck. Go back and check out how everyone's animated. Because seriously, to call this animation lackluster and limited, you probably have never come near the study of animation.

(not all) _"Animation"_ does not have to be good to tell a good story. It's just that I would rather prefer _"Animation"_ over live action shows any day. _And animated movies not made by Pixar/Disney, I'm just not going to add Pixar/Disney to the mix of movies that are good, just cuz there mostly all good._

A lot of people were hesitant to admit they liked it because the fandom was massive and very intense (keeping in line with the themes of the show, it made the fans very hot-blooded). So it was quickly judged 'too mainstream' and slandered on sites like 4chan because they didn't like the fanbase around it. Same thing that happened with Undertale. Overexposure and overwhelming fans.

Watching it in 2021, it's better than 90% of the anime out there and has more unique and interesting animation than 95% of anime. The idea of the show it's to turn everything to 11 and watch it go boom and after 25 episodes, it was a great experience. It's not you FMA B somewhat easy to understand and appreciate anime, it has a lot of metaphors and character work behind that ecchi look, it has some deep themes. Till the end it's about letting go of the past, but appreciating that it existed, to feel good in your skin and to dare make your dreams come true. If you see its look and think it's a superficial TV show, you will lose one of the pieces of art in this genre. If this is what a passionate and independent animation studio can, we need more like Trigger and less generic isekai.

There are moments when Kill la Kill goes insanely detailed. You've probably noticed these as the moments where people joked "there goes the animation budget." So I guess the policy was to spend the budget in such a horribly unbalanced way such that key moments spare no expense, and regular moments, well... the animation director has to get a little creative. And some could argue that its this combination of both high budget value scenes and creatively-used cheap scenes that make this show a joy to watch.

Nui being 2d is also an allusion to her role as grand couturier. Dressmakers and fashion designers often use paper designs of clothing and overlay them onto a human sketch to come up with outfits or layers on a dress / suit. See 3:53 and.... damn i cant find it again but theres a shot where nui literally just turns into a 2d paper dress ala substitution jutsu

I liked Kill La Kill because it was genuinely hilarious in parts, not just because of the script & story (which was funny in its own right) but because of the visual comedy that's packed into just about every scene. I honestly believe you could watch Kill La Kill without sound and, while you'd probably wonder what the fuck was going on and why everybody was always naked and why Ragyo is jilling her own daughter (though to be fair that scene is still confusing even with sound) there'd still be plenty on screen to keep you engaged and to get a laugh out of. I can't make any comments about where it stands compared to a lot of anime since I haven't seen a huge number to compare it to but personally I enjoyed it for what it was; a fun show that doesn't really take itself seriously. Then again, I've never heard anyone criticise the animation of KLK. Also I would say that as much as I agree with your points, your tone in this video comes off a little condescending? Your analysis is interesting to listen to but I found it a little cringy when you were saying anyone who thought otherwise must be an idiot.

I completely sympathize with digi here. After taking traditional 2d animation about a year ago, i realized all the short cuts a lot of anime shows take to get away with less animation, the most noticeable being when the majority of the composition is taken up by the mouth of a character so that only the lip movement only has to be animated wich is one of the easiest and cheapest things to animate, especially since the majority of the time nothing dynamic is done with this. So now is irritates me to no end when I'm watching nothing but two characters standing completely still talking to each other for eternity. I'm looking at you, Fate/Stay Night! God that show was fucking boring as shit! The only reason i watched the entire thing was because i had enjoyed Fate/Zero so much but stay night had nowhere nearly as entertaining characters and engaging conversation to make up for it. Coincidentally i watch Little Witch Academia right after stay night and had this moment when i was watching it saying to myself, "Gods remember when anime was actually ANIMATED?!?!" It was such a cathartic experience it made me remember why i love anime and animation as a whole.
@DreamInSilenceYT8 жыл бұрын
Mariana Mora I feel the same way about FSN. Fate Zero had so much more to offer than the main story it was a prequel to. There was a good amount of talking in FZ as well, but it felt much more warranted in that show where in FSN and UBW it just feels like cheap filler.
@Catpuff8188 жыл бұрын
***** I understand what you're saying and yes it would be ridiculous for a character to be flailing all the damn time, but that's not what i have a problem with. As for checking my animation logic, I suggest you check yours as well. Animation is the illusion of movement. While it isn't always necessary to animate to convey movement, essentially what you're trying to create the illusion of is life itself and last I checked humans can make a wide array of various movement with various dynamic in their movements to portray that they are alive. I'm fully aware that Little Witch definitely had a lot less to accomplish than UBW but I still stand by my critique. I'm not saying that UBW is an anime with no animation, I'm saying is that after watching it it made me realize just how accustomed I've become as a view to see so little animation in anime as a whole. What I long to see more in anime is that for every character to be animated in such a way that gives them life. You don't need a character to be failing around and making erratic movements if that's not what the situation calls for. When characters talk as they often do in anime, they can be animated adjusting their posture, averting their eyes, their face can be grimacing or smiling, reacting in some way to the conversation going on. Heck even just blinking or a hair slightly moving is the minimum that can be done to show yes this character here is still alive and breathing. And these movements are small but they can add so much more personality and life into a moment like this instead of just having a static image that we're use to seeing most of the time in anime. Heck even just blinking can be enough. My quarrel is anime today places making the medium look amazingly pretty as possible but at the cost of having less actual animation. Because it would take so much more longer and more staff and overall more money to make an anime with the asthetic of UWB as fully animated as Little Witch Academia. And honestly the aesthetic of a show is not what makes a show great. Of course I'm not saying that its not important. But because of the technology we have now its easier than ever to make a show look beautiful so why instead of focusing on making the look of a show out of this world we focus on making the feel of a show out of this world. Does that make sense?
@Catpuff8188 жыл бұрын
ew275x Absolutely, the animation of back then can't even come to compare with what can be done now. But its clearly evident that today the industry places aesthetic on this gaint pedestal like its the most important thing that matters in a show. When in reality as long as a show looks "nice" (not even beautiful just nice) I'll watch it.

In the intervening years I've come to appreciate Kill la Kill even more. Nothing has matched up to its sheer energy of presentation. I love how so many things are portrayed figuratively rather than literally. It is making the best use of the VISUAL medium. I've rewatched the show, like, five times and I'm still noticing little details that I hadn't before. I've been pleasantly surprised how the new fighting game "Kill la Kill -IF-" has captured the energy of the fight scenes in the anime. The alternate story mode was pretty good; it's excellent by fighting game story standards.

I have grown up watching anime in the early 90s, and Kill la Kill was one of the first anime in a long time that I was just blown away by the animation style and just watching it. Between all of the visual gags that make fun of other things other anime have done that have become popular, some of their own gags that wouldn't be as dramatic if they didn't do them the way they had, the over all fact that the show doesn't take itself seriously, and their ability to also do absolute eye candy moments as well made this one of the most fun series I have seen in years. The only other animes I can think of right now that impressed me as much with it's ability for true movement and stand out animation style were Cowboy Bebop, and even playing on it more, Samurai Champloo. And they were both by the same studio. But even they had moments where the characters stand still doing nothing but talk.

I gotta say thanks for pointing out how poorly tv anime is animated . I feel that a lot of anime fans dont notice these things. I'm huge animation fan and it's always uncomfortable for me to explain to my friends when i dont like their favorite anime show. It's been hard for me to explain to them in a way that actually makes sense. Most of the time they just think i'm being snooty or trying to make them seem like they have bad taste. To each their own honestly, but all those things you mentioned about TV anime drives me nuts. I find it so boring to watch. Inventive animation is where it's at for me and the reason why i love watching cartoons in the first place. If an anime is more about the story than the animation then that just seems lazy to me. I can read the manga and enjoy the frames at my own pace. To me animation is about the delivery/performance in same way that comedy and acting is.

I wouldn't really call that 2D object flipping inventive, if even all that original. You might barely see it in animation, but merely due to the fact that it rarely fits the style of humor. It depends on the show. The inventive and wacky style of Kill La Kill works because it is a fast, noisy and ridiculous show. It has no place being animated in a more still and traditional manner. While a drama or an uncomedic action show has no place being animated like Kill La Kill.

put it this way... trigger is a studio that mixes the wackyness and movement of classic american cartoon, down to its trippy physics, and combines it with modern day japanese anime character design... to create an unique style signature animation style that goes well with the over the top and insane plots and situations Trigger's anime are written as... pushing the boundaries of moe and non-moe anime... (moe in this instance is referring to the signature big eyes, gorgeous looking art-style prevalent in modern day anime)... sure there are bound to be people that dislike it, but i see it as refreshing and i welcome similar shows in the future...

I knew I loved Kill la Kill for a reason. Remember kids: there's a difference between limitations and deliberate artistic intent.

I love anime for it's story, not for _"Animation"_ all the time. I love how when (just by how something looks) you can tell a story. Not all the time we need to hear the charterers talk. _"Animation"_ can tell a *HECK* of a lot more for the story and how the charterers feel. Live action can't always do that. _"Animation"_ can play with the ideas of how you/the charterer on screen are supposed to be feeling at that time. But... unless you are a _"flawless actor,"_ it's going to be hard to do so. And it's not like a live action stores within a tv show are easy to do. But that's fine if people world like to spend a shit-tun of money just to make a tv show with a grate story. _Ya..._ I get that not all shows with great stories have a shit-tun of money in the budget and still they have in the show a great story. _But..._ some of the shows are daytime tv shows.

You were the one who made a video, I recall (Aesthetic IS Narrative), where you said that expecting someone to look at an art picture and come to the same conclusion as you is immature

Honestly I'm even willing to meet people half way and say that yeah, there probably were budgetary issues with the show. But the fact that they got so creative, and made every moment stand out, the sheer number of creative choices made to express the emotions of the scene without having to basically break the bank is a talent to be lauded.

I was waiting for you to talk about those little mako scenes where she raises her hands and the freaking animators just animated her doing random things, those mako scenes always gets me

I wholeheartedly agree in this feeling of confusion when people bring up limited animation as bad animation. Did it convey the feeling it was supposed to? Then by my definition it was great animation. No matter how many frames per second was drawn. An even better example for me was when I watched His and Her Circumstances. I realised many times that for the past several episodes I had been literally been watching a slideshow of stills and still I wasn't bored. Compare that with many works by Katsuhiro Otomo or Rintaro. Many times their fixation with how many fps are produced gets in the way of immersion. It gets distracting and almost lands in a kind of uncanny valley for me. By the way, a couple of months ago I stumbled over a big behind the scenes video for Kill La Kill and was shocked to see it reveal how many shots used 3D cgi models for the animation. But since the style of limited animation was so much what they were going for they seemingly haphazardly bent the rendered footage to seemlessly fit the intended style. So when people bring up CGI in anime I will make points about the CGI in Kill La Kill. Because while in most shows it sticks out like a sore thumb, chances are that you didn't even expect some scenes in KlK to be entirely CGI.

Well, I mean, the Monogatari series is 95% a slideshow with amazing and creative artwork and directing choices.

I really do think that people don’t understand what animation is “for.” They really do believe that anime should strive to be a series of context-optional sakuga WEBMs strung together by static conversational scenes.

Digi, I also really love the animation style of Kill la Kill but u should really stop insulting people to prove your point. It will just make people hate on the show u try to defend even more.
@Kriss_ch.8 жыл бұрын
This too. It's like with the Re:Zero videos. In the Pleeb & The Weeb episode about it, you guys were aggressive and insulting and little came across besides you not liking the show. But in the Great Re: Zero Debate, you were totally reasonable and the opinions on the show got through without any of them being insulting, despite you all liking/disliking it to different degrees. I like it when you're nice!
@buckwade38748 жыл бұрын
+Redministeren I'm pretty sure that their, "insulting" in the Pleeb & Weeb episode was just being humorous. Digibro did say, "I just want to strangle someone and ask them, 'why do you like this'", with a humorous expression, after all.
@buckwade38748 жыл бұрын
...In what videos does he insult others to prove his point?
@Person012348 жыл бұрын
Who cares. If someone is such a moron that they would hate a show even more because someone defended it in a way they didn't like, then everything digi said about them was probably correct, if not a little overly soft.
@Person012348 жыл бұрын
+Redministeren This is another problem, some people will get offended about fucking anything, just not loving the show they loved is enough to trigger some people. Trying to fucking dodge around offending people is an exercise in futility.
