I agree that photos from the early aughts are ugly as hell. However its not the cameras imo. I'm using cameras that my family had back then and getting fantastic photos. The biggest issues are that those cameras massively overexpose, use flash far too often, and require a steady hand and knowledge of spot metering. If you take the time to edit the images you get there will be so many more amazing photos

What you've hit on really is the difference between a nice memory and a nice photograph.. those digicams are totally kitch now but they were the cameras of my young adulthood.. so, bad photos carried wonderful memories! Low expectations of quality, high expectations of taking it to a party and having fun with a crispy digicam. Digicams were the teen years of photography.

@@acecreates I do think “bad photos” can be interesting and nice to look back on. I think I’m just commenting on the fact that film always ages better as a memory and a photo than early digital does overall

Any camera from any time period that allows you to control at least one variable (aperture, focus, shutter speed, ISO) can produce beautiful images. Consumers eschew control, rolling the dice on Auto. We are now learning that the aughts consumer cameras can be gold in an actual photographer's hands. A Stradivarius makes terrible music if you can't play. For those who needed their camera to do all the thinking, the iPhone was their unforeseen future promised land.

You’ve nailed it man, some people like film because it makes them nostalgic of the 90s in their childhood. Digicams are amazing because all of us early 2000’s teens who took our childhood for granted want to make and capture memories that we loved about our childhood. A great example is I just had my friend use her point and shoot to take some couple photos for me, and they look how Christmas felt as a kid. It’s amazing. Great video man

Its about the vibes, a dedicated device (no distractions), physical controls, fits in the pocket and images that are stylised. You love it or hate it, but it is super accessible. I still have the first camera I bought myself Sony DSC-W130, as a young English guy I travelled around the US and had a great time, the images remind me of that. I'd say the issue with my images was more poor composition, I don't mind the look. Film and processing is too expensive for most young people, that was kind of the case in the late 1990's and early 2000's too. I might have been allowed to shoot a single roll when we went on holiday to Spain as a kid. If I were blasting through my dads film stock, I'd have gotten the belt.

I love the star wars prequels, I adore ugly digicam pics, the early 2000s styles and aesthetics are awesome to me. So your perspectives are totally backwards from mine. I respect your perspective . . . but come on ugly things are cool! Polaroids are ugly by some standards, tons of flaws and imperfections, color shifts, bad dynamic range. In the same way I find the weird quirks of old digital images to be appealing and fun. Peace and Love 🕊

@@elleoat of course it’s subjective, so I totally get people disagreeing with my thoughts on this. We all have our aesthetic that we gravitate towards. I tend to like janky looking film better than janky looking digital

I always carry a lumix fx37 ( I think it is the same leica c lux 3) with me, just for taking random photos when walking around, shopping, or something like that, because is 1/2 the size of the phone and I can hold it near invisible to the others. Also because I dont care too much, it is like 35$ used, a phone is like 600$ or 1000$, and that provokes that I can shoot in every situation with no hesitation at all, and that is a lot with children in a playground or something like that 😂 it take decent photos on sunny day, nice detail and color, a bit of retro palette and vignete, nothing special.... but yes, if I go to taking photos on a walk, thats not the camera I use. And if you only want that 90/2000 look, you always can don it in processing without any problem

Digicams were a revolution circa 2006.... A clean 8mp image was much better than the point and shoots from the decades before. Then cell phone cameras came along and duplicated them. But a good digicam is still a great option.... Easily pocketable, sometimes a 3rd the size of your Iphone, better glass and much better zoom. Esp if you walking around a city, leave you phone in your pocket, whip out a digicam.

That canon digital is fire imo. I got a similar model and I've used it for some time as my first photography camera & was love at first sight. I recently damaged the screen and been a bit sad thinking about it. Sometimes it's about the vibe and not the quality yk... Awesome video !!

Welllllllll! Today’s digicams are the cellphones. People want to think they make nice photos but they really don’t. I stopped using point and shoot film cameras in 2004 when I met my wife and started using the canon G Cameras. Those were better than your average digi cameras. And then in 2006 I bought the very first 4/3 DSLR Panasonic made. They had the first camera with live view screen. The body was made as solid as a Leica. Then they went into the M4/3 alliance with Olympus. And that’s where Ive been ever since. Anyways I wish I kept that old rangefinder style camera called the L1.

Cell phones take great photos. And then you can easily send them to your grandkids. They don't take as good photos as a good camera with proper glass though... And I love MFT... The Lumix G9 is a great camera for a great price these days.
