One last point about the 70/30 gameplay breakdown! It does NOT mean "70% reading and 30% gameplay" -- it's 70% visual novel and 30% tactical PRG, but "visual novel" includes point-and-click adventure style elements, branching narratives based on your choices, and relationship building that will have an impact elsewhere in the game. The 70/30 split (that Habu himself stated) has freaked a lot of people out, but remember that "Visual Novel" includes the story, the exploration, the relationship building!

what are you talking about, this game is basically the combination of 99 + tamer with all the best parts of them and aimed at not children I was immersed, I cried, I laughed, I was amazed by the voice acting, I was surprised, I cried again even harder in THAT SCENE, it is everything good about 99 + mature + digimons being actual characters (with some limitation, tho it might even just be the gameplay choices, maybe all the digimon characters are all as deep as those two), it is everything good about tamers, it far surpasses any digimon story ever came out, this should be an anime and this will be a masterpiece, fk this is my reaction before the true ending, and only one of the route, WTF, who wrote this masterpiece.

Glad to hear! Between the labored development cycle and hearing that noone got review codes on time for this thing, I was a little worried about how the end product would play out. Sounds like I'll definitely be getting this when I can...all the physical copies near me are sold out... When I first heard the visual novel to gameplay split was about 70/30, I confess I was a bit worried I wouldn't dig this as visual novels aren't really my thing. But then I played 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, whose novel/gameplay ratio is also about 70/30 or maybe even higher on the novel side, and I was absolutely entranced by it. So I guess it can work for me if the story and gameplay hit me in the right way. Plus, the way you describe it makes it sound like the novel-side gameplay is actually more invovled than 13 Sentinels was. In fact, it kinda sounds like the more modern Fire Emblems like Three Houses where you are spending a ton of time running around and doing non-combat things with the characters. So I can definitely get behind that.

Finished my first playthrough and I have to say this game managed to find the exact right spot between tradition and innovation. The horror aspects of the story perfectly fit in with the rules of digimon. As long as everyone believes in their bonds everything is fine but if they lose themselves in doubt things get dangerous. A lot of adventure 01 callbacks without being overly pandering and even if a fan favorite digimon appears its very much this game's version of the character. The gameplay was fun but a bit slow, lots of animations overstayed their welcome just a bit like the end of round lag. A turbo mode wouldve smoothed the combat a lot. Its also incredibly easy even on hard to the point where you can trigger multiple cutscenes that are based on enemy HP% at once by bursting something too hard. Feeding agumon all the statboosters kinda trivialized most encounters. One complaint I would have with the game is actually on the sound side of things. The OST is very beautiful especially the main theme Kizuna. The issue however lies with the location selection screen theme, its so glaringly immersionbreaking to go from a tense or sad scene to the "new locations unlocked" screen and hear the ost just pull a complete 180 only to return to gloomy the next second. Lastly the characters talk way too much about stuff being the final battle without it actually being the final battle. It makes sense for them to assume so but its still weird.
@evewhoo2 жыл бұрын
Without spoiling to much for anyone reading this, there was a part in the game where something shows up, and I couldn't help smiling because if you've seen the anime, you can definitely predict what might be going on. It was a fun little callback, but I still think that if you haven't seen the anime, it'd be fine. I also agree with what you said at the end about the final battle dialogue lol It's not like Survive is the only game guilty of this but I do think the dialogue could've been done a bit better there. Also, on the Steam version at least, I noticed a number of dialogue issues, like some text errors weren't caught by the proofreeders. For example, I noticed once that Miyuki was written as Miu in the dialogue box. There's slight issues like that that the game has, but other than that I loved it so much I played it every day after buying it lol

I've only gotten past Part 3 so far but holy hell I am loving this game. The character dynamics feel extremely authentic between the kids and their "Kemonogami" partners, as well as their reactions to their situation they find themselves in. It's often depressing and disheartening and kind of reminds me of Danganronpa on occasion, but you have that element of trying to survive and overcome despair to get through this story as a team while bonding with the other characters. It's already one of my all time favorite Digimon games and I haven't even sunk 15 hours into it yet.

The story and depth of the characters of this game really is amazing. I could really see myself in Miyuki, Aoi and Saki and adored Miu. Minoru actually reminds me a lot of one of my friends. I've only been through Harmonious and Wrathful routes and I will play through the other 2 routes (I'm currently on Moral route at this moment). *SPOILER WARNING:* The concept of seeing human kids from the core cast dying, the Digimon and human partners being two halves of the same soul and their life force being connected to their Digimon (if the human partner dies, so does the Digimon, and vice versa) are all things I imagined for my ideal Digimon series, so it was really wild to see what were fantasies being brought to life in this game.

I have to say that I do like how the characters are more realistic than in many anime series. In the first three chapters, they emphasized that they are still kids (teenagers) and it's very dangerous to go wander around in the digital world. We are so used to trope that kids saving the world that we nearly forgot that human in anime can feel scared towards the unknown. The main cast are much older than most cast in the anime series but the fright they feel is much more visible.

I was looking for a digimon fan specific review and this did not disappoint. You're right, it's not the ideal game (I think a few things on the mechanical side could have been done better) but the story is great. It really reminds me of Adventure, 02 and bits of Tamers. Other comments have mentioned it already but this game is more akin to the SMT: Devil Survivor line of games than to Fire Emblem and even less to Final Fantasy Tactics or Triangle Strategy. My only gripe so far is the one mandatory death. I would have preferred that all the deaths were preventable if you knew what to do like in Devil Survivor. I would have also preferred that the game not just have us locked into the three routes but also have other endings too as non-standard endings or maybe even a unlockable chaos route where the story goes off the tracks after a certain point and everything slowly becomes a glorious functioning mess.

Mind the route and dont break a hip trying to catch a pokemon. Try not to overwork you weak heart from the excitement. We cant let you have too much fun yet or you might get another stroke. My only gripe is that even with all the delays there are still a lot of quality control oversights after like chapter 3 there are a not insignificant number of typos grammatical errors weird translations and some dialogue lines feel like they jump topics and miss a line that was supposed to be between the two (not to mention changing how they refer to each digimon gender wise randomly not that it really matters) it hasn't dampened my enjoyment of the game but it is surprising to see just how many errors made it through

Awesome review, thank you! I think this will be worth it for me once it's on sale. I would prefer if it had more battles and tactics, if it was about 50/50 would be perfect

Look online how to recruit each digimon, and they will give you all the answers to every question they ask, I do it cause every digimon have different opinions that you wouldn’t expect the answer to be so I cheated with that instead to make it a lot easier, but sometimes even getting the answers right, you still have a percentage of success of catching it, and a lot of them had ran away from me

I personally am not too happy with the recruiting mechanic. It feels nice but wow... At least in the german translation the answers feel really random sometimes and you're just guessing which I feel is frustrating. Also you can easily level up your Digimons thanks to an auto battle mode (kinda, you just let the AI destroy the opponents). Felt a bit overleveld sometimes but the challenge of the fight was never zero.

Yeah I have no idea why they did not get review codes to at least game sites like IGN a few days early. I was pretty sure the fact nobody had a review meant it was going to be bad. A few hours in I realized it’s not a train wreck which is why I wanted to get my review in progress out

My only gripe, is that I was the ability to "help" certain characters, wasn't locked behind New Game Plus because it kind of makes affinity pointless in your first run of the game. Just feels like Namco wanted to pad the game out further.
@dragonstouch10422 жыл бұрын
Not quite. You still need them to unlock Mega level and then in New Game+ you can focus more on characters who didn’t reach that cap/you lost, since the evolutions carry over. If you’re talking about wasting affinity on characters slated for death, excluding them pretty much spoils that they aren’t making it
@dragonstouch10422 жыл бұрын
Also, from story perspective, you need a few sacrifices to earn that name

@@thedigiknow that sounds cool i was also just looking up sounds like there is still a new digimon story game on the way from the team that made hackers memory On February 27, 2022, Bandai once again confirmed that the Digimon Story game was being worked on and revealed that the game would take place in the Digital World (unlike the two Cyber Sleuth games) and that the game would feature the Olympos XII as the main characters.

Definitely gonna get it when the price drop a bit. I freaking love digimon but from where im from it is currently the same price as elden ring. I think thats a bit steep. The free Guilmon is tempting as he is my fav tho. For anyone who is currently playing, how far in the game would the player be able to recruit a Guilmon naturally in the game? (No Spoilers obviously)
@dargoid2 жыл бұрын
Very early, right after the tutorial about equipments you can input the code (if you got a physical copy) or just receive the bonus by pressing triangle if you're on a digital copy.
@dargoid2 жыл бұрын
Btw if you're talking about recruiting a guilmon via battles, there's none of them so far and I've just completed my first playthrough. Seems like guilmon is locked in as a bonus (or maybe a dlc down the line) since if you don't have them, the digimon library is capped at 113, and if you have them it's 117.

A bit off topic but would digimon ghost game be a good starting point for watching digimon in your opinion?
@thedigiknow2 жыл бұрын
I was really enjoying it but it’s kind of lacking an overarching story to keep you hooked. For that reason I’d go with Digimon adventure 1999 or Digimon tamers as a first series :)

I wonder if I should get it on the Nintendo switch or the PlayStation or is there a difference?

I’m playing on switch and it’s pretty solid. Some loads take a little long and soooometimees there are a few dropped frames in the dialogue scenes with more action. PS4 MIGHT be better but it might be the same

*possible spoilers* . . . Cant wait to play through again and make sure nobody dies this time, even though i absolutely despised some of the characters after doing the wrath playthrough. I saw a comment that opened my eyes, the characters that have trouble accepting their partners means that inherently they dont accept themselves, as the partner is like a mirror of their soul. That alone made me rethink and want to give them a second chance and try to save them this time
@thedigiknow2 жыл бұрын
Love that! The characters you're talking about were definitely frustrating but I also saw their insecurities and issues deep down, so you're right, I would like to save them if possible given a second try :)

I'm relatively new to Digimon and I understand this particular installment is an atypical genre for the franchise, but as a Fire Emblem fan, the gameplay segments of Digimon Survive are definitely underwhelming. But as someone who always appreciates good storytelling in video games and branching story routes determinant on player choices, the visual novel aspect of it has been pretty interesting so far (I'm about halfway through the game right now). And as a Pokemon fan, I think the darker atmosphere and more plot-focused experience Survive presents is pretty refreshing.
@thedigiknow2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I got farther into the game (actually completed my first run today!) and while I am still proud of this 'Review In Progress' I wish there was more variety in the win conditions for the tactics grid gameplay. It's such a perfect way to spice up the gameplay. I can only remember one unique 'condition' early on which involved getting the professor across the map safely, and you lose if he dies. 90% of the time it was just "win condition: defeat everyone"

It sucks I feel so mixed about this, on one hand being a long time digimon fan I wanna support the franchise however so we can possibly get more. But on the other hearing the elements of the game centered around the novel aspect rather than the gameplay aspect isn't really for me. I was a fan of cyber slueth for example for gameplay but also found story just so difficult to fully fet into having to mash X over and over to read so much dialog. Personally for me I've always wanted a Pokémon esque styled game with elements of world. Have a fun open world between the real world and the digital world explore different parts of the digital world meet befriend and digivolve new digimon. With an overall story to follow with actual voice acting and cutscenes.
