As a person who used to waste probably half the day scrolling social media for almost 4 years straight, I can say how addictive the virtual world can become and so recently I have literally deleted all my social media accounts and have been on a digital detox for the better part of September and now October in a few days and trust me I will never go back Social media and the virtual world is a means of giving you that instant gratification where you dream about the life you could have had while in reality, you aren't progressing in the real world and once I realized this, I completely gave up on social media and I don't think I have ever taken a better life decision than this

1:35:07 funny how four years later Haidt has completely abandoned this philosophy and now insists that brutal anti-speech crackdowns by the government are the only answer. Social media may be incredibly dangerous, but giving the government the power to ban methods of communication is completely beyond the pale and will fundamentally destroy the last little bit of the free speech guaranteed to us by the Constitution. Haidt has become so famous he is now just a member of the elite who views top down control as necessary to save those beneath them. A guy with a fair message about a problem but a reprehensible solution that would make everything worse.

The Book is great, and well worth the purchase for the investigative information alone. Twenty years from now we’re going to look back at this moment in time and realize that we failed our youngest generations by allowing their tech addiction to get so out of control. And we’re going to wish that we had done more to limit the manipulative aspects of this technology.

As a college professor, I see this truth everyday. Kids have a hard time using descriptive language, are are timid with in person interactions and suffer from high levels of anxiety. I even have one student that, whenever I ask him how he is doing or if he understands what I am talking about, he just gives me a thumb up, like he is on Facebook! This needs to stop!

My teenage niece developed a phobia of screens last year. She can’t look at phone, computer, or TV without getting sick. Since then she’s read scads of books and written 3 novels, and is very happy. I’ll be watching her to see what life can be like without screens. Meanwhile I am loving KZbin and voraciously learning about so many interesting things on it. Edit: two years later she can look at screens now and is writing, animating, and communicating with friends on it.

This is the most intelligent and powerful discussion about information technologies I have ever heard. The salient points are very congruent with Dr. Carl Jung's writings about psychic energy and libido. I could not find anything to criticize about these two people in this discussion. Everybody needs to hear Cal Newport describe these facts with Rich Roll flowing through the best descriptions of complex topics possible. Thank you both. Please keep up the good work.

I listened to this audiobook, built and implemented the plan. It's AMAZING how much time you reclaim. For me it wasn't productivity time, I'm already productive at work. But it's the freeing up of so much leisure or bonus time that I was immediately more relaxed and felt like my life was WAY less hectic.

@bigslacker666
@bigslacker666 5 жыл бұрын
@@Dom-xi8je Well, you really should get Cal's book and read/listen to it. I'm not gonna be able to break it down into the detail he does. But basically don't think of tech as "Is it useful" but rather "Is it the BEST tool USED IN THE BEST WAY to meet my life's true priorities." With that golden rule in mind, set up very strict rules for the tech that you use over a 30 day period in a 'digital declutter'. Once you've done this you can re-examine and possibly introduce some back in a limited fashion, again with the golden rule in mind. There are some stumbling blocks along the way he points out and ways to mitigate them, so again I'd spend a few dollars or get the book from the library for the details.

Once again Rich, you do an awesome interview with all you have in your studio. This guy really makes sense though. So yeah, take a break. Limit your responses to email etc to so many hrs a day ( I recommend 2) and take a couple of days off in a row every week where you totally unplug from EMF. I am a 63 year old woman that was a horse trainer ( riding and driving ~ buggies and carriages) , along with lessons. Retired from that at 44 and then became an Early Childhood Educator. The teaching was hard enough, but the social media stuff that went along with it was crazy making. Take care of you first, then your family... then everyone else.

Some days I scheduled longer stretches of time if I am marketing a video I just released. I would love to one day just pay someone to do this for me, or have a core group where I do not have to spend so much time talking to strangers hoping for their attention.

I so agree with all this. Social media and keeping up is work. Takes away attention to what is important. Makes you feel like you have to show off something. Work, home, life is already cluttered. We don't need more stuff and more things to do. I just bought the S10 phone and as cool as it is I realize it is more computer than I really need. I don't think I will be upgrading for a while. I don't really use facebook anymore. It gets too cluttered with so many people trying to share their stuff and I have no control over what is on there. Plus it takes away from seeing my actual friends and family members. I am moving to less because I need space, to breath. As the population grows on this planet, there is just going to be more and more stuff to deal with. So less will be more. Great Interview. More Minimalism podcasts interviews! Let's get outdoors more, spend less, and enjoy the company of people we care about more.

I worked for a company where the manager was manically getting me to switch tasks. It would take me 20 minutes to set up all the docs and programs to do a particular task and get into a flow state - then she'd interrupt me to have me finish off something she was doing (rather than literally spending 2 minutes to finish it herself) and so I would have to note where I was on my original project, which involved a few spreadsheets with additional documents and emails and then spend 20 minutes to open up all the docs and programs needed to do the 2 minute task, complete that and go back to my original project. My original set up time was wasted as it was interrupted, then I had to spend another 20 minutes to do the 2 minute task, then return to my original task and spend 20 minutes setting up and another 20 minutes retracing my steps. I couldn't get anything done. As Cal would say, i spent my whole day in 'attention residue' mode.

No doubt Rich another great show, I always find myself constantly trying to grow my instagram page to attract more clients to my photography business which is ongoing ! but, Cals topics are so true man, I had a friend very close friend like a brother to me and for five years whenever we'd hang out and train or something it was very awkward due to our conversations mainly being through texting which is bad and lead to very unfortunate misunderstandings.. So now as a result I keep tab with how much I'm browsing on social media sites with the feature on the iPhone that helps me keep this under controL, also with my potential clients I get them on the phone or in person to meet to discuss photo shoots strange as I comment I am noticing this is all I witness in the Middle East everyones facedown with their mobile devices..

for me i was super addicted to social media mainly instagram, and every single time i would try to just deleted, it would just not work so here's how it worked for me: -unfollowing accounts that i never really looked at their feed -eliminating myself from looking at profiles that made me feel any sort of negative feeling, ot doesn't matter how attractive their content is, whather I know them in person or not, just unfollow, block or hide and not expose myself to their acc -actually enjoying instagram! I noticed that I mostly scrolled down mindlessly, I started to get in the account that i actually like, enjoy and get a value from, and actully look at their content slowly, instead of mindlessly scrolling -every single time i hit the reels, i would tell myself: this is probably gonna end up being a whole hour wasted and im not even enjoying, why not watch some longer content that I would actually enjoy? little by little I'm more likely to watch a long quit video on youtube instead of short reels -use instagram on laptop more -log in/out every single time, not save my password so I might get lazy at times -this one is important: be attentive to my feelings why scrolling down, do i scroll down when im upset or bored or mad or anxious? how do i feel when i see a certain type of content? it really helped me and i realized how much anxiety all this content used to make me feel without realizing, and I would put the phone down, tell myself to breath, take it easy, and listen to my feelings and keep repeating: i dont want to spend my time focus and energy on some content that not only i dont enjoy but also bringing me anxiety, this doesn't make me weak or unconfident, it's just how overwhelming exposibg my brain to that flood of content I hope it might be helpful to someone out there...

i quit social media for 10 years and lost alot of relationships and contact with people and missed out on alot of opportunities and regret leaving it now so ive been at the end of both extremes, balance is key but we arent all designed like robots that can do that

I used to have that job where I managed a directors email account and then wrote an end of day report notating who reached out and what they wanted. I filed the emails into varieous detailed folders. One folder was the catch all - please respond to this. Internally it was well understood that having a figure head that everyone wanted a peice of was not that most effective use of that persons time, but then they got the pay and status to be that person ... it is as crazy as it sounds. Much appreciation for this conversation!

Something I thought of before which I completely agree with him about is that the people that struggle with it (even after 30 days) or don't find a digital detox to be a success are the ones that haven't planned beforehand. Like he says they want to step away or minimise internet use but haven't planned what to do with all their free time. Of course they get bored.

Interesting conversation!! Loved the topic and information provided. I can see why Kevin Kelly, the writer might have been uncomfortable with the Amish. "Sarah McClure is an investigative journalist who spent a year reporting on sexual abuse among the Amish. She uncovered cases, which include rape and incest, across seven states over the past two decades. And she says that that does not capture the full picture." She says there's a really strong preference to protect the abuser (father brother uncle neighbor), prevent women from reporting by placing facilities, and keeping the family together at all costs.

Yes, this is the reason I hesitate to embrace the Amish view of technology, no matter how wonderfully minimalist it is. Where I live there are several thriving Amish communities, and women and girls are almost always the most disenfranchised and most likely to suffer abuse. I can't help but wonder if access to a smart phone would be a lifeline for them. Additionally, speaking of how 80-90% of Amish youth return to their communities after their rumspringa, I can't help but wonder if it's because of the fear of being shunned for life by their community and family. I think we have to be really careful about entertaining the idea that it has to do with the minimalist use of technology. With that being said, I am a big fan of Cal's work and really enjoyed this episode.

I recognize that if want to do monotonous tasks that these podcast make them much more palletable and I turn my phone on without thinking about who to watch. That's where the problem starts that something humorous will take my attention instead of what's good for my life.

I am snowed in every day with emails. I have eliminated all the commercial ones (it is amazingly hard to get them to actually let me unsubscribe!) but between work, kids school, and organizations that I volunteer for, I get on average 87 emails a day that I have to assess to see if they actually require me to know or do something. I am pushing hard for everyone to STOP over communicating to the point of becoming static.
