I am very pleased to be able to present in this video my latest user oscillator for the Prologue, Minilogue XD and NTS-1. For me this oscillator is very much a trip down memory lane and an attempt to recreate some of the amazing sounds from one particular poly synth released by Korg way back in 1985.
To purchase and download this user oscillator, please go to my SoundMangling website at the following link: www.soundmangl...

Thank you so much 🙏 Good question. It's been a very long time since I programmed user oscillators. I'm totally out of practice! But to be honest I got a bit frustrated with Korg, I invested a huge amount of time developing my "DW" and "VS" user oscillators, and then Korg came out with their all digital modwave synth which has so many features that overlap with what I developed. Unfortunate coincidence of course! But their lack of interest in taking the prologue and minilogue XD any further forward was also a big factor. Why invest time inventing digital synth capability for their ageing line-up of "logue" synths if the very next month they might wipe you out with yet another all digital product that duplicates what you developed? If I see serious investment in the user oscillator concept again from them then I'll definitely reconsider, it was such a great concept and I am sure it boosted sales for them immensely.

@@TimShoebridge cost/benefit. They have too much to push out In hardware they don't make subscriptions on. What you did certainly isn't wasted. Your knowledge and sharing will inspire, we are just in a period of time where the Taiwan/China things happened chip shortage if you believe that, pandemic if you believe that, inflation, copyright infringement, and good ol pressure to release hardware every other quarter. They did a nice thing calling it used multi engine and you don't have to pay them for their support, but with subscriptions they could do it like Roland cloud /zenology and support development with those funds so it doesn't get so obsolete. These manufacturers are just like car companies. They'll let your infotainment center get 8 years old and it aggravates people that have over the air update capability.they never do updates and keep your car from depreciation , the good thing is synths are trending as investments where as I said, more programmers will do what you did just have to wait for those kinds of people who are musicians and nerdy types with spare time and funds.

Having an aging and mostly unreliable DW-8000, I was delighted to find this package for the Minilogue XD. Purchasing and installing was a breeze and I am amazed how close it actually sounds to the DW-8000. By adding some delay and reverb, the two synths are very, very close. But then by adding the Minilogue's own VCO lines, patches go far beyond what is capable with the old lady, and which removes any issues with that slight lack of clarity that you mention. Thank you Tim, for the superb work with this set! I will be checking out your other sets as well! :-)

Despite my avatar icon... the EX8000 (rack version of DW8000) was my first "real" synth I got as a young teen, being keyboarder in a band (I used to play a Böhm organ and Böhm expander 12/24 (FM thing) before). That brings up so many memories... I have just missed the Juno and DX7 phase, our local music dealer had either the DW8000 or JX8P to offer at that time... and then for SALE the EX8000, which I bought then. Thanks for the video - and the user osc, which will be soon in my Prologue :) (I am sure I would have sold the JUNO, just as I did with the EX8000 later on, since I was looking more for "real piano, brass etc", and I would be very angry at myself today.. so I am glad I never had a JUNO in those days :), since I became a synth sound lover later then... Well probably an original JUNO would be broken in the mean time, I used to gig quite a lot back then...)

Great work Tim. I agree that the DW8000 (my first synth) has something special, especially with things like brass pads. I think your decision to make the shape control act like a wavetable scanner is really clever. FYI, the way the KingKORG implements its DWGS control is that the control knob (it's shape control) is for detuning. I think it clones the same waveform for anything other than its zero setting, and the shift-control does some sort of FM thing, either between the two cloned copies or with some other waveform. That's on a single oscillator. If you want detuned different waveforms, you have to use a separate oscillator. It also has the expanded DWGS set of 64 waveforms. More generally, it also has a single nonlinear detune knob control that combines normal detuning for small values, but covers +/- 2 octaves for detuning between separate oscillators. It makes detuning and +/-1 or +/-2 octave settings easy to achieve, but things like 5th and 7ths are less obvious, but you can also menu dive to get at a linear control for those.

Trouble is I don’t actually own one but have been seriously thinking of getting a Prologue!!hmmm....this is really pushing me to bite the bullet and splash out on one! Hope sooner or later, you get your hands on a Prologue and make some patches for that as well!😊

Nice custom wave from. What I have found to be a major difference in the way synths sound is in their digital to analog converters at their audio output (s). For Example, if you listen to an OLD JV-880 synth and compare it to the line that came after it, the 1080, 2080, 5080 etc... none of them sound the same on very similar patches. In fact the OLDEST Roland JV880 has the most transparent audio outputs that never got replicated in the rest of the newer XX80 line up. Some of the above synths were unusable due to their dark colored and muffled sounding outputs. I never quite understood why the outputs would become worse with the newer releases of the new and improved synth line up for Roland. As my engineer used to say, "New but not improved".

The DW-6000 is one of my favorite synths. Recently, I have been eyeing MS2000s or MicroKorgs to get some DWGS waveforms in a more modern package with an analog filter to match. I began to wonder if it were possible to have the DWGS waveforms as the User Oscillator in my Minilogue XDm. Of course, the Google was my first resort and lo and behold, the amazing Tim Shoebridge had indeed tackled the challenge. Thank you for your efforts. I will indeed be checking this offering out, your caveats noted. I am somewhat interested in the forthcoming Modwave, but still need to hear more. I am glad that I still have my 6000 in any case.

Excellent as always Tim! Great sounds here, and you continue to impress with all your user oscillator creations! I feel I am somewhat decent at patch design on my Prologue, but with my lack of familiarity of the DW, I fear I don't have much chance in recreating these presets outside the XD. Great explanation at the end, and definitely curious to hear what can be done with shape modulation between the two oscillators, especially with some detune thrown in.

Thanks a lot. You can modulate the pitch with both the envelope and the LFO. The LFO can do single shot mode if you don't want a cyclic effect. I think on the patch in the video I used the envelope as it wasn't in use for anything else.

@TimShoebridge

Unfortunately it does. I simply did not have any room to hold multiple copies of the waveforms which would be needed in order to simplify the higher octave waveforms. I was working on a smoothing algorithm but it ate up too much processing and I couldn't get it to work. I haven;t given up on the idea but it might take me a while to get something that works. If I do, then I'll provide it as a free upgrade to anyone who has the bought the oscilator.

@@jackcimino8822 From what I have managed to find out the waveforms are pre-sampled inside the DW synths. At higher octaves some samples are skipped.
