Learning trimming made a massive difference in my flying. Once you begin approaching things as, "pitch for speed, throttle for altitude" you'll notice a huge difference in your approach (no pun intended) to flying. Go to a safe altitude and practice trimming yourself into slow flight. Learn how to maintain altitude, Decent and climb with just your throttle... This will definitely translate to Bush/STOL flight. Pull out the xcub, savage or kitfox and learn how to ride the very edge of your stall horn... Again maintaining altitude, descending and climbing... You'll find your landing distances shrink rapidly because what is approach and landing? It's slow flight phase Extra points if you can find the old book "stick and rudder"... It's a masterclass on the importance of the basics.

I've been an instructor for many years. Not a bad explanation but perhaps a bit complex while in the aircraft giving dual. An alternative method is to keep the complex theory to a minimum in the airplane. Allow the student to trim by rote while in flight then study the aerodynamics involved on the ground. Trim is best explained in flight by a simple demonstration followed by the student trimming the airplane. Example while giving dual; Trim simply allows you to neutralize the control pressures required to maintain a specific flight condition and configuration. You put the aircraft in the flight condition you desire. You adjust the power as needed to maintain that condition. Then you neutralize any and all control pressure by trimming the aircraft. Nose.......power......trim. It's that simple........always ! For example.......a climb from level trimmed flight; The aircraft has a "climb attitude". That attitude can be demonstrated by placing the nose of the aircraft at a specific attitude above the horizon, holding it there, adding climb power, then trimming off any and all control pressure. This simple method will work for trim in any flight attitude and/or change in configuration. The name of the game for the instructor is allowing the student to trim in flight by rote after simple demonstration followed by a more thorough explanation of the why's and how's during a post flight debrief. Hope this helps a bit. Dudley Henriques

Wow. That was great. You are a very good instructor. Very helpful information that one tends to overlook. I would love to see you apply your considerable talents to tutorials on the basic flight instruments, the Garmin instruments (530, 1000 and 3000), autopilot operation, NDB, VOR, GPS, ILS, and RNAV. I realize that quite a lot but all of these items are of great interest to flight simmers and would be greatly appreciated. BTW, another great topic is flight planning with not only the built-in MSFS approach but also with a sophisticated 3rd party add-on like Little Navmap.

Awesome job! Your videos are so well done and to the point. I have watched many videos that are good, especially Squirrel. I even purchased the Flight Academy VFR and IFR modules. However, I have learned so much more from your videos which has made MSFS 2020 even more fun. You are right, and THANKS TO YOU, that understanding trim as a "cruise control" made everything so much easier. Adjust throttle to maintain vertical speed as you adjust trim for air-speed absolutely clicked for me in this video. Thank you so much and please continue sharing your knowledge. There are still newbies like myself that can really benefit from even the simplest of topics!

Ive had an extremely difficult time with the most basic things in this sim. I have no similar problems in any other sim. Using my TM Hotas to set trim is an exercise of frustration. It kinda moves like it is being controlled by someone else. I have no fine control. That Ive had to spend 4 hours on this already with no solution in sight is so unacceptable. Two buttons, up trim and down trim. Why is that so hard?

Trouble with all this is and domestic sims is that you cannot “feel” the aircraft as you can in a real one. Until someone brings out a good yoke with feedback this will always be a problem with sims. I believe there is one but it’s expensive (£1000 in the uk approx) and l have no idea if it’s any good. When l was pilot training my instructor used to tell me to use “pat” for level changes that’s Power Attitude Trim. In domestic sims you end up using the trim to change the pitch which is wrong.

I just downloaded FS2020 about two weeks ago (FSX finally broke irreparably with Windows 10) and I have been working with the C-172 and F/A-18E. Vertical TRIM worked well in FSX but it won't hold with FS2020. I've tried several different things but am of the opinion now on 8/2/2022 that vertical Trim simply doesn't work in FS2020. Two years ago we watched with eager anticipation the great improvement in scenery graphics in FS2020, but if aircraft don't work, what good is it? The product was either release prematurely, or the development staff is spread too thin working on other 'games' besides FS2020. I wish I had FSX back, but--as I said--it seems to be broken irreparably.

The trim setting doesn't work well. It seems to be assigned to the joystick button, so I'm using the button to set trim. However, ①when I try to make some subtle setting by pressing the button once or twice, the reaction is very little or none. And if I keep pressing it, it suddenly moves a lot. Also, ②even if I could set the trim, it would not be stable(not be kept in that position), and after a while, it will move to other position. I'm a FS beginner, so I don't really know, but③ is trim work like this? I would appreciate it if you could give me your comment on the above three points.

I came to this looking for a hint to stabilise my MSFS 2020 C-152 in the yaw axis. I can trim the aircraft for pitch beautifully, but as soon as I go hands off, which is the whole point, the aircraft enters a gradual left turn. I have to continually apply a little right yaw to stabilise the heading, which is both tiring and frustrating. I know that there is no manual rudder trim on a C152 but, in reality, the engineers would have adjusted a fixed trim tab on the rudder for cruise flight (done by bending it) to counter this force. So, I am looking for an artificial method of stabilising a pitch-trimmed aircraft in MSFS 2020 for heading - perhaps in settings?
