When game designers don't get a limit on time after being asked by fans to make a game out of a demo. Vs. Big business gaming where everything has a budget and time crunch because investors demand products no matter how bad they will do, because they are completely detatched from the business.

I have a 4 year old and 5 year old who LOVED playing Astro's Playroom. As soon as I heard about this game, I pre-ordered. We moved their beds into the living room and gamed late into the night with them. It was such a joy to see them actually be able to play a game that's fun and engaging and simply, just joyful. Sure, there were game references they were missing (although they did see Aloy and screamed it out), they are experiencing what I also consider to be the best part about gaming. The mechanics of using light to find hidden platforms, seeking out hidden worlds, and even taking leaps of faith have all brought me right back to playing Super Mario Bros in 1995. It sounds silly, but it almost brings tears to my eyes seeing my boys experience the magic of games that I remember from playing Super Mario Bros on SNES all those years ago. Now, when they're not playing, they're running around playing 'pretend Astro's' and it just warms my heart. One of my boys when I tucked him in last night said, "Brother and I are going to make video games. He'll do the music and I'll do the game." If that's not what life is about, I'm not sure what is. I'm glad you saw the joy of this game too. It's a beautiful game during a weird time in gaming and a brilliant reminder of why gaming can be so incredible. Wish you the best John and DF!

AAA game with a team of less than 100 people, made in less than 4 years, takes full advantage of the hardware while providing solid performance, amazing haptics that actually enhance gameplay, and utterly unique mechanics. I really hope this game takes off and the industry sees that bigger and shinier does not mean better. We need more unique games built by teams that are enabled to achieve their own vision, not some board or team of investors. The fact that this game is releasing on the day of Concord's shutdown is very bittersweet. I hope Sony (and the rest of the AAA industry) is taking notes, and the sales actually reflect the review scores.

My worry about the entire industry is that this maybe just isn't good enough anymore. Making an amazing single player game that doesn't have microtransactions or live service garbage might just not be enough to keep AAA companies growing/stockholders happy. Which could explain why these companies are all scrambling to make Live Service games that literally no one wants... because it is the only option left... I am kinda worried we are in a bubble and the video game industry is going to crash again...

This sequel looks much the same, and better. I think the most appealing thing is it’s not another grim, walk & talk like The Last of Us. Nor a reflex-intensive soulslike-slog. It’s just damn fun, has a lot of heart, and feels like the direction the industry should have gone, had the Hollywood-rejects not taken the helm.

Yeah, you're not in your mid 30s because if you were you would have grown up with this stuff everywhere. The irony is you sound a lot like those whiny try hard kids on youtube and the reason folk are excited is because its GAMEPLAY is FUN, REQUIRES SKILL, REPLAYABILITY and NEW and CREATIVE with no BS agenda and to top it all off would be IMPOSSIBLE to achieve on a PS4 and that's something worth celebrating, don't you think?

While I do think Astro Bot is fucking gorgeous. I disagree on the level of whiplash you speak of, I think the level of polish is so high on Odyssey. I am still wowed by it, even with the hardware limitations it looks incredible. The Switch was weak back in 2017, Nintendo knew what they were doing. Sure the render resolution is lower, poly count, LOD, everything .... along with none of the showy physics, but taken in context with the power of a 2017 system on a chip, I still can't help think it looks anything other than miraculous.

@Oryon7
@Oryon7 3 ай бұрын
@@DanFarrell98 I'm glad you asked. It's a good question, not exactly easy to define, and ultimately subjective, hence the quotation marks. Nevertheless, here's my definition, which may be true for others, but not everyone... By the "Spirit of Gaming" I'm referring to the joy of interacting with the medium. What you DO in games, HOW you do it, and how seamlessly your input (via the controls) channels your intent, and finally, the FEEDBACK (audio-visual), that makes the things you do all the more satisfying. Things like elaborate stories, hyper realistic graphics, extensive motion captured dialogue/cut scenes, etc, while they have their place, only matter once you have all the core stuff (mentioned earlier) in place. Yet, today, studios are doubling down on the latter as the foundation of their games. Budgets are thorough the roof for games that are ultimately a drag to play. Average experiences at best. Those things that actually make the game fun/enjoyable to play are what, I feel, collectively emits the "Spirit of Gaming." Even if one can't grasp what I'm getting at, one look at Astro Bot in action, and it's easy to walk away with the impression of: "This looks fun to PLAY!" That is what gaming was always about, and Truly IS about!

Finally… a game worth brushing the dust off my PS5 for. This game makes such excellent use of every feature of the PS5’s controller… the best since Astro’s Playroom. Every different surface Astro walks across produces a different combination of sound (through the controller speaker) and haptics. If you’re lucky enough to have a 7.1 surround system, you’re in for a particular treat. And the music’s absolutely on point for a game of this type. Yeah, the graphics/physics are also incredible… but I just wanted to shout out the audio that so often gets forgotten about.

Will be picking this up after work today after seeing the reviews and praise. I can remember playing Astro's Playroom when i got my PS5 on release and I was blow away by how fun it was and how it utilized the Duel Sense like nothing else has. I can still remember reaching the room with all the ice and when Astro started skating on the ice and how the haptics on the controller emulated the feeling to exactly how i remember ice skating to be. I can remember a decade ago when Forza Motorsport 5 they had rumble motors for the L2/R2 triggers and called it "Impulse Triggers" and when i played the game i thought it was a cool concept that could be built off but i think that was the only game that had it and then the future Forza games never really took advantage of it after. So seeing the PS5 Duel Sense come out with a similar concept taken further by having proper motors on the triggers gave a feel that was the next level.

@@petebagwell6666 me too, when I looked around in VR I thought. Damn, we're here. Then they never made, and probably will never make, another one. That is the one VR title I lobbied for. Like, I bought a psvr2 specifically for a new astrobots but I stayed for synapse. If you have tried it, give it a go. It's like John wick in a weird black and white world with Jedi powers.

I think this will be 'remembered' as the LOST GENERATION... The consoles just aren't powerful enough to handle PROPER 'Next Gen' experiences. So all the games are either Poorly Performing attempts to feature advanced features. Or 'Cross Platform' games that can run just fine on PS4, and only get a slight resolution/frame rate bump on PS5. That UE5 'Matrix Game' demo was such a TEASE!

@@StreetPreacherr Personally, I'm fine with the latter. Giant generation leaps are a thing of the distant past, and "last-gen games, but uncompromised and running properly now" is about all I'd hope for at this point.

@@StreetPreacherrnot just that it can’t handle what we perceive to be ‘next-gen’, but also a degrade on the AAA industry that really accelerated in this gen. With so many AAA games that come half baked, buggy and such, we’ve hardly gotten any games worth calling next gen. Some of the only few I can think of are Ratchet and Clank Rogt Apart, Spider-Man 2, Astro Bot, The Finals, that new journey to the west game (wukong?). I’m sure there’s a few others I’m forgetting, but it’s far too little for being this far into the gen

what happened in the industry is they just use the latest engine (like unreal 4 or 5) and create generic games and call it a day. Gaming is no longer about gaming. It's about having an expensive PC and Nvidia card, and seeing nice graphics. It's not about being skilled or story or other thing that takes work. Which is very good for corporate profits and companies like Intel, Nvidia, etc.
