I've been playing this with my 6 year old daughter and it's been a joy. She has gradually grown with confidence and will sneak off to play it by herself which she's never done with a game before. Plus all the customization options you earn as the game goes really vibe as a motivator for her. Playing as a red panda has been a gamechanger for her.

About your community point, I would like to broaden that out to a "grassroots movement." The first Astro level was a side project in the free and very underrated Playroom VR game. Because of the positive reaction to that level, they went on to create Astro's first full game: Astro Bot Rescue Mission. SIE did not market that game much initially, but as people who played it loved it, the buzz started to grow. Gradually, more reviews and videos about Astro Bot Rescue Mission emerged-sometimes even weeks after the game’s release. This momentum helped the player base grow even further with Astro's Playroom. Long story short: there was already a community-a "grassroots movement"-supporting Astro Bot on PS5, even before the cameos in Astro's Playroom and the announcement of the new game.

@@Mew_Stor The fact that Horizon: Call of the Mountain is the only first-party title on PSVR2 speaks volumes. Plus, with the current state of the VR market, it's unlikely we'll see another push for Astro there anytime soon, unfortunately, I do love VR, though, and the only studio I would trust to handle a port of Astro Bot Rescue Mission to PSVR2 would probably be Nixxes, if we're sticking to SIE's own studios.

the segment regarding backseat gaming was spot on.. in my case its wit my 2 year old.. he loves watchin me play!he often grabs the controller and asks me to play 🥹 and while we’re playin together, he often tells me where the puzzle pieces are and gets excited when we find bots.. Great Video!

Maybe I'm just ignorant, but the only thing I'm missing in this by the way beautiful video is, that this game also is a celebration of PlayStation, which for a lot of people, or at least me personally is an important brand since it has been part of my life since the PSX and still is and even though you could see Astro Bot as a huge commercial, you could also see it as a collection of franchises that are connected to a lot of (nostalgic) memories for a lot of people. Anyway - I really appreciate your content and hope the channel will grow even more!

Yeah the two concepts really go hand in hand in today's corporate world but just because something is a commercial, it doesn't mean it can't be a celebration too. I was just thinking that, because I know a lot of people criticise how this is just Sony's way of using nostalgia to encourage more people into buying their products, sure, but most people playing this are ones who already are willing to buy their products and who have possibly been enjoying their products for most of their lives, or they're children who don't really understand any of that stuff anyway and just wanna have fun. And if those "critics" are still not satisfied with that kind of reasoning, well, lemme just say that the bottom line is, this is much better marketing than many other studios or companies do in this industry, in that it's actually full of life and also very visible effort on the development side. Overall an amazing game to releases during Playstation's 30th anniversary year.

We just got a PS5 after having a Nintendo switch for years. Blasted my way through Astro’s playroom and immediately bought Astrobot after I got the platinum for playroom. My 3 boys, my 5 year old daughter, even my wife all love this character and these games. And as a lifelong Nintendo fan I can honestly say… this can stand proudly next to Mario’s best (odyssey, galaxy). It’s also completely missing any paid upgrades or DLC and runs like a dream. The controls are simple but very intuitive, the dualsense controller gets used like in no other game I ever heard of. It’s as much part of the game as the TV screen you look at. And all without any hint of bugs, framerate issues, while looking gorgeous, full of life and beautiful colors everywhere. It’s technically brilliant. To all complainers that it won GOTY… Stop whining, and play it… It didn’t steal the title, it deserves it. Nintendo should take a bow and be really proud. Mario has a new friend 😊

I think you forgot about Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Astrobot's levels and general progression is actually pretty similar to that game, rescuing a bunch of characters to move on and unlock stuff in the hub area and such. I love both games a lot.

Okay, here‘s one tip for backseat gaming: instead of handing one Controller back and forth, go to the ps5 menu and enable Assistance-Controller-Mode. This way both Players can go at any time they want. This helped my girlfriend (former non gamer) getting into Astro Bot as well as many other titles.

Having little side quests in platformers adds so much to the gaming experience and helps with the pacing, as you said. The first game that I played and did this so well was Hercules. You needed to collect the letters and they very hidden in fun places. The Rayman games also have you save little creatures and show you ones that you missed.

We live in a blessed era when there's genuinely a game for everyone, and not just that, but everyone also has options to choose from regardless of how specific they get. This is really good because different people are looking for completely different things when playing video games. For instance, I saw a post on reddit recently that showed Mario with hyper-realistic graphics. I did not think it was good and it was generally not well-received because Mario is not a game that should ever become visually realistic. Yet there's a group of people that always put realistically-looking games above other games because that's the metric they decide to use in order to determine which games are the best. But does that mean that Mario, one of the most influential, celebrated and longest-running franchises in gaming is bad? Or for children only? There are also details you might not notice when playing a game because they're not important to you, but they can degrade the quality of a certain game aspect. In a short session I played Wukong on my cousin's PC, one such detail was invisible walls, for example. Now, invisible walls are not an issue on their own, but the context they're in made them quite unpleasant. Given that this is not an open-world game, but is set in a semi-explorative outdoors environment where I play as a monkey warrior, whenever I see parts of the world where it seems like I should be able to traverse, it's taking me out of the experience when I'm just blocked by imaginary boundaries. This happened about 20 times during my 1 hour of playthrough (until I obtained the first transformation) and I think at that point it classifies as a design problem. And that kind of design problem can be tackled or ignored, but they decided to ignore it. I cannot decide for them whether that was the right decision or not and like I said, it's not always an issue in games, but in this game it is an issue. And you might not see this like a big deal, but that's exactly why I said that everybody looks for something different in games and if you're not looking at all aspects of gameplay, then you can't objectively determine what the gameplay quality actually is. And this is not me saying the gameplay is bad, this is me saying that when put into a different perspective, it might be very different from how you perceive it to be. And then we get to games like Astro Bot. Now, you might not enjoy particular aspects of Astro Bot or some other games, but, even though they are not perfect, it's very easy to tell when you look at the game and play it that it nails down its design well and it shouldn't be judged simply for being intended for a different audience.

Astro Bot 100% deserved GOTY and I wanted FF7 Rebirth to win it. It was very well designed and was one of the best platformers I've played in years. I just played it and got the platinum in it, and it was incredible. Only thing that makes me mad about it is how the game shows us how much IPs SONY is just sitting on and not using (Ape Escape, Sly Cooper, BLOODBORNE, etc.) IMO it also can help the future of gaming. For a lighthearted platformer to win GOTY should be a lesson to all AAA gaming developers on what we the consumer actually wants. We want games to be fun and rewarding. We do not want forced DEI lessons in games we play (looking at you Dragon Age Veilgard and Intergalatic).

Astro Bot is this generations DKC. I was one of the many kids that was blown away by Donkey Kong Country when it first released on SNES. It was the MUST HAVE game for that holiday season and watching my son play Astro Bot (which he has platinumed already )the parallels between the two games is uncanny. Games can be fun and beautiful and they don't have to be so serious and up their own ass.

Well, for me astro is purely single player game. I just enjoy that... let's say wild creativity. I also like it for one more thing. It has some more challenging levels and for me it's probably a first game that I could truly see my mistakes when i failed those levels and not argue that failure was game being unfair (Sigrun, Gna, I'm looking at you). So for me those astro level are probably first that i can call challenging and not frustrating. I've spend around 1,5-2 hours to finish the last level and it was really satisfying, not driving me mad. Nice change

I mean I had harsh takes on this game winning at first because I looked at it as a kids game where more advanced games like Wukong and Stellar Blade should’ve won. But in the end Astrobot kind of just went back to the roots and is in essence more of a “game” than anything while being neutral and not really on either extreme of the political spectrum. For that I respect Astrobot. I’ve always believed games do a little too much these days. Still kind of funny a little platformer like this won GOTY.

As a life long Final Fantasy fan, it wasn't FF7 new game on the PS5 that convinced me to buy the console, but Astro Bot. I grew up on SNES and PAX consoles and FF and JRPGs. I really enjoy playing Metaphor ReFanzio on XBOX but now I am going to get a PS5. I'm glad I waited.

I mean Astro Bot is some pretty casual fun and I liked it, but... GOTY? One's got to ask what the hell happened to the gaming industry if THIS is a GOTY... What a sad time to be a gamer, but luckily the good older games, emulation and backwards compatibility is there on some platforms (not talking about you Playstation)

I really enjoyed this video, and the game is an absolute gem, but one thing that sours the "celebration of gaming history" aspect Is that the bots are just given cute titles that give a general wink at who they are, but they never tell you who they are, what game they're from, about the studio that made the game. Its really frustrating. I almost feel like its by design because there were multiple times I ran across smaller characters and was like "ah I know who that is! I love that game. Too bad Sony shut the studio down" That's literally my only criticism of an absolutely stellar game. The celebration feels very hollow at times.
