@@lukemorris9066 HFW might be more technically advanced in terms of graphic rendering. RDR2 does have some low res textures for 2024. However, HFW doesn't come even close in regard to details and interactivity. No game does. RDR2 is an open world masterpiece, not just in graphics

Rockstar have done what they've always done, working their magic with lighting and post processing to evoke the impression of a realistic image. RDR2 however has demonstrated something I've never seen before in an open world game in that the scenes produced are about 95% perfect. There's a shimmer here, a visible culling horizon there, but it rarely draws your eye unless you're out looking for it. The LOD management is so superlative that you can forget it's there at all; it's almost seamless. This is a game I can boot up and simply admire.

Horizon Zero Dawn was the first game to make me truly notice what this generation could do for consoles. However it’s Red Dead Redemption 2 that made me notice what happens when you put legit technological wizards in front of a computer and ask them to make a game. Sure, Uncharted 4 and God of War are able to pull off some amazing feats in graphics but in the context of RDR2 being this gigantic Open World, this has to be the best looking game I have ever seen. Well done Rockstar!

You can't compare the budgets man. What Naughty Dog and SMS do with their smaller teams, budgets (still huge but smaller when compared to R*'s) and shorter development cycles is just as amazing. RDR2 is what's possible to achieve when money is available. R* is on a level of their own. It's kinda pointless to even compare imo.

Why cant you do both? 2 totally different and good types of games. If they gave the BETA to everyone for a week plus many would play they game and finish it and cancel their preorder and have played the game for 5 dollars or free(if ordered on console) They are a business, they have to make money, it also makes sense to force people online in short periods to stress the servers to see if they crash... the point of a beta. I'm here playing RDR2 again after all this time in 2024. Finally working through the epilogue. I'm playing on PC in first person, and man I really think this is still the best open world to date. It may not have the shiniest bells and whistles now, but the detail on all scales is just incredible. There is so much personality in the world. The ecosystem feels so alive without breaking a natural feeling world. Man, I'm still only playing at 1080, but it looks incredible.

@@raknikmik We're talking about two characters on screen the majority of the time. In RD2 I've seen 30 plus characters, animals, and insects all interacting with one another. Ad in a fully dynamics weather system with day/night cycles and you have a top 10 best looking game this gen. I don't know, I think Namco has some optimization to do on their UE4 engine. Tekken 7 couldn't hit 4K 60 initially on my GTX 1080 graphics card last year. I can do 4K 60 now, but initially the performance was not what I expected given the game and hardware. I didn't see anything that blew mind in SC6 60 FPS or not. Injustice 2 was mind blowing so it got away with 1600P but not SC6.

Just reinstalled Red Dead 2 and was having a blast with it when I remembered Digital Foundry's incredible video from three years ago, discussing all the technical feats. Immediately came here to watch this again and I can only say two things: 1. How this game has aged like fine wine from a technical standpoint - it's a masterpiece in graphical complexity and smooth, robust gameplay which makes me addicted to it like no other game. And 2. How incredibly insightful and detailed the presentation is, in this video - I'm assuming a lot of hard work went into it and it shows. The visuals they've shown here from gameplay are spellbinding. 30 minutes well spend. If there's anyone who's just discovered this game or are about to boot it up after 3 years, I urge you all : Please watch this video and just appreciate the scale of work that went into making this game. And then play to your heart's content. Explore and experience everything the world has to offer. And for heaven's sake don't rush to complete it. Take your time. Take it all in. There won't be a game like this for quite some time. Cheers !

It's one game that absolutely tanks my setup when maxed out but then again most current titles would too. I might be alone here but in my opinion, the only thing the game lacks from a technical standpoint is maybe ray tracing and even that won't drastically change how the game looks I think. What they should bring to the next gen consoles is a 60 fps update which would be a game changer. Sadly I don't know if Rockstar can be bothered anymore about this community 😔. But don't worry about that. Go ahead and purchase a copy for the console you prefer. The game still looks gorgeous on my cousin's PS4 and it should look and perform even better on a PS5. Digital Foundry did a video on RDR 2's old gen console versions and explained how the game looks and plays best on the Xbox one x. The game in its current state is still miles ahead of any other open world title imo. Looks phenomenal irrespective of the platform. You can't go wrong with either an PS5 or an XBOX series X when it's being played in native 4k. Happy gaming 👋🏼

Man this game is truly remarkable in so many ways. If I had to choose one key component that really stands out it would have to be the volumetric clouds. They did such a fantastic job with them and it's by far the most selling point to creating a believable environment. I often find myself just standing at the top of a mountain and looking down over the clouds to the environment below, you can see the light shafts casting around it's insane.

By far my personal fav game since 2018. Love this game to this very day which I find myself missing from time to time which lures me to play it on PC for maximum pleasure. It’s good too on one x but I just MUCH prefer the PC experience now days since it supports a very vibrant modding community that breathes extra life to this already masterpiece of a game. Excellent tech analysis, most I knew already but stating the obvious just makes it more that relevant imo. I particularly like the level of verbal sophistication and choice of words during the presentation 👌🏼 It matches perfectly with the level of love and dedication the developers clearly put into this game. That and the fact that it practically covered everything one can hope for. Well done sir! 👍🏼

RDR2 is truly miraculous - playing on XBox 1X with a 4K projector and a 92” screen and 7 speakers around and it’s mesmerizing. Graphics are so stunningly beautiful I’ve had to pause the game so I can take a picture with phone. Thanks DF for explaining some of how R* did this.

When you go out of the map animals will still spawn. They do not move around. That made me realize that out of bounds they dont know where they can go. And the paths they take inside the map are not random but calculated. Which makes sense because it prevents them from running in circles or getting stuck. I can only imagine how much effort it has cost to create (invisible) paths for the animals all over the map.
