Rockstar have done what they've always done, working their magic with lighting and post processing to evoke the impression of a realistic image. RDR2 however has demonstrated something I've never seen before in an open world game in that the scenes produced are about 95% perfect. There's a shimmer here, a visible culling horizon there, but it rarely draws your eye unless you're out looking for it. The LOD management is so superlative that you can forget it's there at all; it's almost seamless. This is a game I can boot up and simply admire.

Horizon Zero Dawn was the first game to make me truly notice what this generation could do for consoles. However it’s Red Dead Redemption 2 that made me notice what happens when you put legit technological wizards in front of a computer and ask them to make a game. Sure, Uncharted 4 and God of War are able to pull off some amazing feats in graphics but in the context of RDR2 being this gigantic Open World, this has to be the best looking game I have ever seen. Well done Rockstar!

You can't compare the budgets man. What Naughty Dog and SMS do with their smaller teams, budgets (still huge but smaller when compared to R*'s) and shorter development cycles is just as amazing. RDR2 is what's possible to achieve when money is available. R* is on a level of their own. It's kinda pointless to even compare imo.

Anyway. God of war is an incredible game and also the best reviewed game on the PS4 to date. So whatever happens with Red dead redemption 2. If they get as high, higher or lower, God of war is a spectacular Game.

Out of all the developers out there, Rockstar has one of biggest, if not the biggest budget out there, with one of the biggest teams, and they spend many years crafting their games. Why cant you do both? 2 totally different and good types of games. If they gave the BETA to everyone for a week plus many would play they game and finish it and cancel their preorder and have played the game for 5 dollars or free(if ordered on console) They are a business, they have to make money, it also makes sense to force people online in short periods to stress the servers to see if they crash... the point of a beta. This wasnt an early access buy, it was a beta buy. (and sure id love to have the complete game now but gotta use common sense and use your head and not your heart lol)

@@raknikmik We're talking about two characters on screen the majority of the time. In RD2 I've seen 30 plus characters, animals, and insects all interacting with one another. Ad in a fully dynamics weather system with day/night cycles and you have a top 10 best looking game this gen. I don't know, I think Namco has some optimization to do on their UE4 engine. Tekken 7 couldn't hit 4K 60 initially on my GTX 1080 graphics card last year. I can do 4K 60 now, but initially the performance was not what I expected given the game and hardware. I didn't see anything that blew mind in SC6 60 FPS or not. Injustice 2 was mind blowing so it got away with 1600P but not SC6.

Just reinstalled Red Dead 2 and was having a blast with it when I remembered Digital Foundry's incredible video from three years ago, discussing all the technical feats. Immediately came here to watch this again and I can only say two things: 1. How this game has aged like fine wine from a technical standpoint - it's a masterpiece in graphical complexity and smooth, robust gameplay which makes me addicted to it like no other game. And 2. How incredibly insightful and detailed the presentation is, in this video - I'm assuming a lot of hard work went into it and it shows. The visuals they've shown here from gameplay are spellbinding. 30 minutes well spend. If there's anyone who's just discovered this game or are about to boot it up after 3 years, I urge you all : Please watch this video and just appreciate the scale of work that went into making this game. And then play to your heart's content. Explore and experience everything the world has to offer. And for heaven's sake don't rush to complete it. Take your time. Take it all in. There won't be a game like this for quite some time. Cheers !

It's one game that absolutely tanks my setup when maxed out but then again most current titles would too. I might be alone here but in my opinion, the only thing the game lacks from a technical standpoint is maybe ray tracing and even that won't drastically change how the game looks I think. What they should bring to the next gen consoles is a 60 fps update which would be a game changer. Sadly I don't know if Rockstar can be bothered anymore about this community 😔. But don't worry about that. Go ahead and purchase a copy for the console you prefer. The game still looks gorgeous on my cousin's PS4 and it should look and perform even better on a PS5. Digital Foundry did a video on RDR 2's old gen console versions and explained how the game looks and plays best on the Xbox one x. The game in its current state is still miles ahead of any other open world title imo. Looks phenomenal irrespective of the platform. You can't go wrong with either an PS5 or an XBOX series X when it's being played in native 4k. Happy gaming 👋🏼

I'm here playing RDR2 again after all this time in 2024. Finally working through the epilogue. I'm playing on PC in first person, and man I really think this is still the best open world to date. It may not have the shiniest bells and whistles now, but the detail on all scales is just incredible. There is so much personality in the world. The ecosystem feels so alive without breaking a natural feeling world. Man, I'm still only playing at 1080, but it looks incredible.

By far my personal fav game since 2018. Love this game to this very day which I find myself missing from time to time which lures me to play it on PC for maximum pleasure. It’s good too on one x but I just MUCH prefer the PC experience now days since it supports a very vibrant modding community that breathes extra life to this already masterpiece of a game. Excellent tech analysis, most I knew already but stating the obvious just makes it more that relevant imo. I particularly like the level of verbal sophistication and choice of words during the presentation 👌🏼 It matches perfectly with the level of love and dedication the developers clearly put into this game. That and the fact that it practically covered everything one can hope for. Well done sir! 👍🏼

Man this game is truly remarkable in so many ways. If I had to choose one key component that really stands out it would have to be the volumetric clouds. They did such a fantastic job with them and it's by far the most selling point to creating a believable environment. I often find myself just standing at the top of a mountain and looking down over the clouds to the environment below, you can see the light shafts casting around it's insane.

GTA 6 is built upon even advance game engine than Red Dead 2 this game is 5 years old and still looks god damn amazing I can't even imagine what GTA 6 will look like.

It's going to be insanity man. This game was developed with the lowest denominator of hardware (Xbox One) and it still looks amazing on even that. The new low denominator will likely be Xbox Series S which is far more powerful than the One.

After Red Dead Redemption 2 the company took approaches to minimize crunch, it's probably not incentivized or even allowed to work over a certain amount, I don't know the exact situation but the byproduct of that is going to be a slower development.

RDR2 is truly miraculous - playing on XBox 1X with a 4K projector and a 92” screen and 7 speakers around and it’s mesmerizing. Graphics are so stunningly beautiful I’ve had to pause the game so I can take a picture with phone. Thanks DF for explaining some of how R* did this.

A console open world game running at a native 4K is impressive... but I'd still rather have 60FPS with reduced visuals, but it could be a CPU limitation, either way as a PC gamer with a computer worth the price of four Xbox One Xs I am impressed

Yo, just a general question. Is there any game on pc (exclusive or not, doesn't matter), that look as good as rdr2? I only get on consoles to play exclusives/not-on-pc games from time to time, and playing it has made me really disappointed in the lack of higher quality pc games. The only potential great open world game for pc is Star Citizen, and I highly doubt it will ever truly be released. Besides that I can't think of any close to rdr2.

It's a pain with all the exclusives. tbh i got a backlog of games to play on xbox/ps4/pc/switch all of which i have. I recently got a new LG OLED and all my friends will be playing on the xbox esp when multiplayer comes out next month. I'll sell my original xbox one and the games that i don't want in the new bundle, so it's about a £120 cost for the upgrade. I think this game deserves to be played as good as can be. I'll prob end up part exchanging a ps4 for a ps4 pro when something new is out like last of us 2 or something

It annoys me that people assume you have to zoom in to notice these details when you play on a massive (relative to PC monitors, laptop screens and/or mobile screens) - and with youtube compression too and probably not being watched at a 'native 4k' either but a downsampled 1080p version. Even with a Pro, if you upgrade to a 4k TV, the games look much sharper - even if they are only 1440p compared to the downsampled 1080p that you had with your HD TV!! DF have to zoom in because they know not everyone will be watching on a 4k TV, the same they game on and that youtube compression will soften the difference too. Take a screen shot of both and flip between them on a 4k TV and the difference will seen much bigger than it is when you are playing. As someone with an X and a Pro, the difference is clear when playing the 'Same' game on different platforms on my 55" 4k TV. The difference is often bigger than the advantage the PS4 had over the Base XB1. It annoyed me too when people said the difference between PS4 and XB1 wasn't obvious and you had to zoom in to see the more 'blurry' details on XB1 compared to the sharper PS4 - it was VERY obvious to me when playing the same game on both platforms - Batman: Arkham Knight, the Witcher 3... Maybe I am more aware of the 'finer details which looked 'blurry' on a XB1 comparatively and unless you can see what the full 1080p looks like, then you can't compare in a real situation! The thing is, unless you have both versions on both platforms, can compare both in your own situation on your TV, then you won't miss that bit of grass because you won't know it is missing. The most obvious is usually the overall 'sharpness' and few will be looking at 'small' details like the quantity of grass. Some don't notice the 'low res' pixelated shadows when playing because they are not looking at the 'shadows' themselves - but get a shadow wrong or worse, miss a shadow and that stands out a mile away. The brain is great at not focussing on details but also great at spotting when things aren't quite right. As for the Chequerboard implementation, games like H:ZD were built specifically for the PS4 and probably utilise the in-built onject tracking in the Pro to deliver the 'best' PQ. This game was built for multiple platforms and probably had to build in its own solution rather than utilise a feature unique to PS4. Its a bit like how numerous 3rd party games on XB1 didn't utilise the ESRAM because it was a design feature unique to that console and would have required reworking to much of the game for that specific platform.
