This game really feels like a culmination everything Naughty Dog was striving for since Uncharted 1. Excellent linear level design, captivating narrative, characters that feel real thanks next-level motion capture, insane levels of detail, the violent, brutal and grounded combat design from the first TLOU, very natural looking and responsive gameplay animations systems similar to Uncharted 4, and even takes cues from the more open level design aspects of Uncharted Lost Legacy. I kinda want to take this comment above me to mention a couple things. Game development is harsh, yes. And overworking employees is an issue, but large studios ALWAYS have a ton of movement with employees as a game goes through development. Hire extra in crunch time, layoffs or move to other projects as development winds down. Its shitty but it happens. Most of these people are not saying fuck it, I hate this, I'm leaving. They are moving to other opportunities or fields as their skills progress. The visuals that are achieved in TLoU2 mostly come from the engine and tools that Naughty Dog have been developing for years. More than likely hundreds of people have had their hand in improving these tools. Remember that ND is a business in the vein of creativity and passion. People have been too pessimistic recently about this.

I'm not sure if Naughty Dog does this specifically, but an unfortunate common trend in game development is unpaid overtime. There are also societal pressures that come along with crunch time as well; you're given the "choice" to work late but if you refuse you'll probably be screwing one or many of your co-workers over. It's not being pessimistic when people are being taken advantage of, and I think it's important that people know what actually goes into making a game have visual fidelity like TLoU2.

Obviously the graphics and lighting are an incredible technical achievement, but it's even more impressive when you consider the attention to even the tiniest details in the game. For instance, when you're playing, if you sprint and then dive into prone multiple times, Ellie will actually get scrapes and scuff marks on her forearms. If you stand under a stream of water coming off of a gutter, it will actually splash and splatter when pouring on the character (in most games it just tends to clip through with zero collision), and Ellie will wipe the water off her face afterwards. The gore system is also incredibly detailed. You can blow someone's jaw clean off if you shoot them in the face with a hunting rifle, or if you shoot someone in the throat, they'll actually gurgle and choke on their own blood as they die. Honestly, the only game I've seen that competes with the level of detail in TLOU2 is probably Red Dead Redemption 2. Frankly it blows my mind what Naughty Dog and Rockstar have managed to pull off on seven year old hardware. I can only imagine what just these two developers will pull off with the PS5 and Series X

Can't wait to replay it on PS5. The game is great on PS4 Pro but that film grain and 28-30fps is definitely holding this masterpiece back. I'm also very curious how the gaming community is going to feel a few years down the line when all this irrational hate dies down. For those who are going to hate, just know that I've played the game and it is no less of a masterpiece than the first game. I'm going to be putting up an in depth analysis video on why the story is truly amazing and how it holds a dark mirror up to the previous installment. Truly a brilliant and important work of literary art and it's from a video game... If you love video games and gaming in general you should be celebrating this game, not hating it. The Last of Us and Part II have redefined what a "video game" is supposed to be. Games like these are why a hundred years from now, video games will be part of language arts curriculums in schools. Just like books and films. I really don't think gaming history will look favorably upon you if you're one of said irrational haters. I can understand the game not being for you and if you're one of _those_ people, my words are not meant for you. Although, to you I would say to reconsider. I've been analyzing this game from the perspective of a writer, filmmaker and gamer and I can tell you there is a lot of symbolism and a metric ton of thought and care went into crafting this narrative.

Even when people think they point at “plot holes” thay are actually touching on the things you should think about and they all have answers. I hope this will enable gaming to truly pass the line from entertainment to art. I am 7 years late to The Last of Us - I bought the remastered version when it came out and tried to play it twice but bailed after 60 minutes, I don't 100% know why. Due to this, I had no interest in Part 2 and actively avoided anything to do with it because it was shaping up to be too violent for me to find any enjoyment. Fast forward to a month ago and I sat down and committed myself to playing Part 1 ... I was so very wrong about this series, it is utterly incredible. I have just finished Part 2, which was brutal, violent, and emotionally impactful - but it was necessary, it told a story, and it made you feel the weight of your actions. It is a masterpiece, no question. I am enjoying working my way through the DF videos now that I know what happens in the game. John's technical analysis is fantastic but if I ignore the methods utilised and focus on just playing the game, it is, without doubt, the most consistently impressive visual/audio experience in gaming to-date IMO.

Same, bought a second-hand PS4 Slim with 20 physical and 20 digital games for about equivalent 100 euros/112 USD from a friend in November 2020, got the remaster on sale that December, tried playing it and it seemed boring (didn't help that I had mostly been playing Bloodborne and hadn't ever played with a gamepad before, so a shooter felt pretty rough to my K+MB brain). Played TLOU this February while sick with covid and recovering from apendectomy, I wouldn't say I loved it but I still liked it a whole lot and was amazed how good this upscaled version of a 2013 game looked on my parents' shitty TV. Then I played Part II in March and was completely blown away by the way it looked, felt and presented its story. It's almost an unnnecessary level of detail and dedication and it truly cemented in my mind why having big budget exclusives like this is a good thing. There are no doubt other games with bigger or similar budgets, but none of them have this level of polish and attention to detail, mostly because it's expensive to do, which ND and Sony don't care about as much, apparently. Now playing through the The Nathan Drake Collection and although I thought UC1 was kinda mediocre, if pretty, Among Thieves is an amazing narrative action game and I can clearly see the visual and storytelling development ND went through from this through TLOU to TLOU Part II.

While others have stopped bothering with them a long time ago. I think John is very much appreciative when it comes to the art the developers have created within the constraints of the hardware. Alex has a much different focus. And for sure has he different duties and responsibilities within DF.

Last of us part 2 made me feel really bad about FFVIII remake's graphics. Square Enix is kind of a big company. Couldn't they optimize FFVIII remake a bit better and figure out how to stream textures at the right resolution?
@AdamAdamHDL4 жыл бұрын
I think it was on purpose. Ff7remake wasn't going for the gritty look of the last of us. It's still a steampunk/manga type world, with bright colours and flowery magic displays. I think square did well to keep it as true to the original as they could. Without replicating block limbs.
@vzachari4 жыл бұрын
@@AdamAdamHDL The art direction of FF7 remake is perfectly fine. I was referring to the texture streaming errors. Like textures not loading at all, backdrops being misaligned and sometimes appearing at the wrong resolution. Based on recent rumors, Square Enix might fix all that in a PS5 update for the game which they may charge $$ for.

The second installment of the game mas as well include the first installment as well.. will there be a third? Or is it two installments? @@Lanse1984 For me It doesn't feel like a typical final fantasy game because exploration is lacking. For example, One of the toughest bosses in the game is berried in a VR sim. No dungeons, no nothing. It worked for the original FFVII because that was just the prologue before the world opened up...but here it's the whole game. It honestly would shake me to my bones sometimes with how incredible the sound design effects and combat theme worked together during combat encounters. The sound of a pipe smashing across an enemies face, the pop and tear when you would get shot or hit with and arrow and those rumbling basslines and ominous tones of the combat music just gave me chills. Granted i was using quality headphones and an external dac amp when playing but if you have the means to pick those things up yourself i would wholeheartedly reccomend you do.
