One thing I'd like to add about the haptic feedback that didn't get brought up on the video is in gta online, when your at the night club, the closer you are to the speakers in the club blasting music, the more intense of haptic vibrations that the controller gives off. I don't understand why AF (anisotropic filtering) is always skimped on. I've been putting it at 16x for as long as I've been able to. The performance hit is practically non existent compared to the visual upgrade. Same with texture quality. Unless you are out of vram, high res textures are not a big impact at all yet the visual difference is huge.
@itsd0nk2 жыл бұрын
I agree, although I’ve always disliked the look of 16x in most games. It’s unnatural for things to look that sharp at those angles, even in real life or on any camera. 8x is usually the perfect balance.
@childofvenus37812 жыл бұрын
I'm also confused about this. Especially in games like "The Last of Us 2" and also "Ghost of Tsushima"; Creators of these games are obsessed with details, especially naughty dog, details that are sometime so extreme that you wouldn't normally notice, but they don't care about something that fundamental?
@liamness2 жыл бұрын
Consoles have APUs, the memory bandwidth between the CPU and GPU is shared. This is why 16x is normally "free" on PC.
@OGPatriot032 жыл бұрын
It's always a shame, AF 16x is mandatory for me. Mud textures at an angle look awful. As for comparisons to real life what you need is physically based rendering to add sheen to such surfaces, not muddy textures.
@fafski11992 жыл бұрын
@@itsd0nk Yep, I've always preferred using 8x over 16x. Outlines on some objects can look a little too overly crisp and sharp at times, while using 16x. While using 8x on the other hand, it seems to soften down and blur the edges just a touch. Which in turn, gives it a more natural look and without it looking jagged like with lower settings of 4x or lower. 8x is often the sweet spot, at least for me anyway.

One thing I am almost certain I remember from the PS3 version was how the game targeted the left and right vibration motors independently, creating a really cool haptic sensation, in particular; driving the at the edge of a freeway and going over those little ridges that warn you about this being the edge of the road, you could feel which side those bumps were on and it was just super cool to me. This does not work using a controller on PC (as far as I am aware), and I skipped the PS4 version so I don't know if they kept that there, but could someone check if this works with PS5 haptics; the game is cheap *enough* that this small detail might be what sways me to pick it up

The PS5 version does indeed seem to vibrate the relevant side of the controller more intensely depending on which side the car is being affected by whatever road condition / obstacle you've hit. With PC shadows, if you use the softest setting it has that shadow box like on PS4, however, this is fixed with both the AMD and Nvidia shadows at the cost of flickering shadows and instability depending on the card. So I turn that setting off.

AF is pretty bandwidth intensive, something that could very well be considerably more limited on an APU in a "cheap" game console. On PC with dedicated components everything has it's own bandwidth for such things instead of sharing it. This does not mean 16x or 8x AF isn't possible, but it takes away a sizeable chunk of the bandwidth budget available.

I'm sorry, there is no "upgrade". You can buy the next-gen version of the game. It doesn't matter if you own the game on PS4 / XBox One or not. Yes, it's currently discounted to $10 on PS5 and $20 on XBox, but that only lasts up to June. So... there is no "upgrade" option here, and people not buying now will have to pay $40 for this next-gen version. For that, it's really pretty bad, honestly. Yeah, RT shadows are nice and better anti-aliasing is neat, too, which adds up to considerably better image quality, but that seems to be about it? No retouched geometry, no up-ressed textures, not even upped the AF setting (seems like a very stupid thing to skip, that's basically free on modern GPUs). Overall, this just seems like a bit "minimum effort" so they can advertise advertise it as "next-gen version with RT support". For $40, that's pretty disappointing, honestly.
@Longlostpuss2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you were expecting? The best these new consoles were going to be able to do was bring the previous gen version in line with the PC version, that's about all the hardware resource can afford 🤷🏽♂ Remastering old gen games are pretty much all gamers are going to have to get themselves used to if 4K 60 fps is going to be delivered as promised and this has been a theme since the mid gen console refreshes and is a complete mug off in my opinion. This particular game is a 7th gen title (yes, 7th gen, let that sink in) and they're going on like this release is some sort of achievement - it isn't. So I agree with you, except that you shouldn't have expected more, this is as good as it's going to get with the hardware on offer, unless you want to see a dramatic drop in frames and a drop in resolution.
@MR-vg7yn2 жыл бұрын
@@Longlostpuss I was arguing against the conclusion of the video that this was somehow a decent upgrade for the asking price. It's a minimum effort "remaster" that's intended to be sold for $40. For that kind of money, one _might_ expect, as I said, some actual effort put into that remaster. Improved textures, improved character models, improved character shading, higher anisotropic filtering... all of these would probably have been possible, even on console hardware. I'm not a GTA fan. I will definitely not be buying this, don't get me wrong. I was just arguing against the conclusion of the video.
@Longlostpuss2 жыл бұрын
@@MR-vg7yn Again, not disagreeing with you on lack of value for supposed upgrade, even DF themselves imply this in their follow up video. I was just saying that in all honesty, the consoles weren't really capable of better than what was done here. Even the original vanilla GTA V on PC was very taxing on the hardware once you cranked settings up, you needed a very tight rig to do it. For the upgraded modded visuals, you needed a monster rig to run those and even then, you could still run into performance hiccups here and there, so these consoles had no chance of doing anything beyond what we see here. The real issue, as DF said themselves, is that Rockstar were charging too much for the upgrade. On PC, enhanced editions of your existing library would often be downloadable for free if you already had the original game, but the console model deliberately makes your old library untransferable - that's the issue here and has always been the problem with its ecosystem. This is by design in my opinion, they always want to make it so they have that excuse to milk more money out of you and is why I don't understand why anyone still locks themselves into consoles beyond the age of say 18. PC is where it's at.

If you're gonna pay more for hardware, you're also gonna pay more for games. It would be pretty stupid to buy a $3K system and no games.
