Still don't understand what's the demographic for PS5 Pro : the people willing to spend 700£/800€ on this have in all likelihood already played those games. Whho's paying this kind of money for a chance to replay through Horizon ZD or Spiderman 2 with slightly denser foliage and nicer refelections. And if they're tapping into a very niche market then the premium is not signifficant enough to generate massive incremental profit. They should have went all the way and say : we're only gonna sell to the 1%ers of gamers and put out a system able to put out 120Hz/Native 4k/Full RT and sell it at 1500£. It's too little valkue for money and not premimu enough. I can't see any other scenario than it failing miserably.

It’s aimed at enthusiasts who own a PS5 and will sell that console for £350+ and enjoy the improvements. Whilst the PS4 Pro was lower in price, people banged on about how unnecessary that was and in the end it accounted for 15% of the player base which is impressive. I think the Pro will sell out and do well. They’re making a profit on the console.

This thing is so insanely priced in Australia. PS5 disk edition $750 at launch. Got a price increase to $800 with the slim model. Has disk drive and stand included. PS5 Pro, no disk drive or stand, $1200. With disk drive and stand $1410. 76% increase in price against the current PS5 price. 88% increase vs launch price. The PS5 slim digital is $680. So if you don’t care about the disk and stand it’s still a 76% increase. Who is going to buy this thing? A few PS super fans. I’ll be shocked if this sells out in Australia, unless they only ship 10 of these things.

If anything I see this as a good thing for the PS6. PSSR for example is being tested and learned from on the PS5 Pro, allowing for much more effective use on the PS6. Normally this kind of R&D would be placed against the cost of the new console but in this case it will go against the small amount of people who purchase the PS5 Pro and the PS6 will reap the benefits.

I don’t think so. It’s actually the opposite, introducing pssr now gives devs hands on time and feedback to improve. So you’ll get better version in ps6. At this point we’re reaching diminishing returns. Ps6 will be essentially the same technologies pssr enhanced with frame gen, larger gpu and much better cpu. You’ll essentially get a top level pc today in a ps6 which will probably be as best you can get for console tech.

​@@WarCrab-009SS you can easily spot the difference between performance and fidelity modes in every game at a normal viewing distance. that doesn't mean it's always bothersome (like insomniac's games or demon's souls for example) but it can be very underwhelming (ff7 rebirth in this video and many performance modes using undeniably low native resolutions to lock 60 fps). the pro with pssr seems capable of outputting fidelity mode image quality at 60 fps, i'd say that's a lot more impressive that what OP is suggesting.

I’m really kind of fed up with ray tracing making dark areas too dark, it’s not realistic and it’s annoying, and I’m kinda fed up with digital foundry and others not mentioning this. RT needs more bounces or some other way to stop that from happening.

They probably just need to have your character's eyes adjust to the darkness in-game, brightening the whole scene just a bit. OTOH, if you have a dark area with a bright light at the end (like the tunnels or underpasses in Cyberpunk 2077) then it makes sense that when looking toward that lightning blows out your eyes photo receptors, causing that light to be very bright and the surrounding area to be very dark.

its more realistic to photochemical/digital photography, not your eye. An interesting creative choice by devs is if you want the graphics to look more like stuff captured by a camera which is normally how you view real world content on a tv, or if you want it to look more like your eye which has a much larger dynamic range and automatically adjusts to large exposure changes

It isn't an issue with RT/PT. You just prefer the look of baked lighting for games. I'm outside on a sunny day. I can find pockets of black everywhere. The deck, firewood pile, furniture, etc. That is how light behaves with an incalcuable number of bounces. Why would it suddenly illuminate what's occluded with fewer samples in a digital space? This of course all still ignores eye adaptation which many games don't handle well and compound your complaint. These issues will get ironed out when baked lighting is abandoned. As long as devs are just replacing baked lighting with RT/PT, issues will occur, they behave entirely differently.

To outright say that none of them needed enhancements is surely a take. FF7 Rebirth, Jedi Survivor, Stellar Blade, Dragons Dogma 2. These games, while the image quality is okay on some of them on the base PS5, some aren't. Especially the framerates. So to have the boost of framerates and image quality for these specifically would be a major improvement. But yes I do agree that Soyny is out of touch and we can only hope for a better next gen and maybe a BloodBorne remaster on PS6.

Between the professional and the iPhone 16, that's the smallest improvement in hardware I've seen in years. RT reflections/shadows are underwhelming at best, and the current resolutions are fine. PlayStation should focus on games, or at least on more interesting hardware than this.

U do realize that the purpose of the pro is to pretty much play quality mode at 60fps instead of having to play in performance mode...that's why you can't tell a difference in graphics...they are showing quality mode on both.

Talking about the value is a bit premature. We need to see UE5 games, all them 720p performance modes and how they run with Pro. Still not worth it in some parts of the EU, though, where you can get a 4070, 5800X3D and 32GB RAM PC for 100€ more than the Pro with a disc drive.

I'm not a luddite, but I look at these comparisons and 90% of the time I can't see any difference. Why would someone pay $700 for some more reflections? I would be excited if they were doing something amazing with enemy AI that they couldn't do before, or maybe some really cool new gameplay that couldn't be done before. Seeing the reflection of another vehicle in my car's body in a racing game? Eh, I'll pass.

KZbin compression isn't helping here. I can confirm when jumping from ps5 to pc on a 65 inch oled, playing the same game there is a big difference. The pro image quality is a nice jump but it's all relative to your entire setup and also budget.

Comparing PCs to consoles doesn't make sense, it's like comparing an SUV to a sports car. The purpose and experience are different. If the PS5 Pro was advertised at a thousand, it wouldn't make people switch to PC. Sony knows this.

I am probably one of very few individuals who are hoping that the Gotham Knights game will be improved both by the PS5 Pro and by their developers to some degree. Really had some potential, that one, and trust me - I wish that I were influential and significant enough to create a Gotham Knights game of my own... As a sample, I would share that if I had significant influence with Gotham Knights, I would not have killed off Batman, but would have stuck with what happened in the comics where Batman disappeared for months because he was held captive in a maze by the court of owls, so that would have the focus be on the Gotham nights (additional characters like signal, orphan, and others - maybe even potentially as DLC). The Gotham Knights would go up against characters like Mr. Bloom and Catman along with staple Batman villains, go through a number of adventures that would include detective work as well as combat, with an overarching adventure, we're ended with Bruce being rescued, focusing on rehabilitation after that, and then going off to assist the Justice League, telling the Gotham Knights that he can clearly leave Gotham in the Knights' hands, and that he's proud of all of them (this way, the player could continue playing the game, and additional expansions could be made - including a behind the scenes randomizer where Batman would suddenly come in and join combat scenarios, like how Odin randomly appear in ff8 and other final fantasy games...). Eh? And that's just scratching the surface really... I was really hoping that the actual games that manifested in our reality would be more reflective of what I wrote above, but maybe a new attempt could be made down the line...
