Late reply but hopefully I can help you out (also this is no where near a perfect interpretation, which may not even exist). Overall, this movie asks questions about art and the feelings it gives you. At the start, it's seen that James's book is about copies of art and his argument on why copies can be just as powerful as the original pieces. That's kind of the idea of the film. So as we move through the story, reality becomes a bit twisted and strange. There are subtle cracks, shifts, and differences from what we consider reality. The characters undergo a story that is a certified copy of a real story. I'd take note that when Kiarostami pitched this movie to Juliette, he used a fake story. The question that Kiarostami wants to ask is seeing if you truly care about what "reality" is, and if that matters to you. When viewing a certified copy of a piece, all most people care about is how it makes them feel. That is what art is all about (in my opinion), how it makes someone feel. So, essentially when we watch the two characters, Kiarostami wants us to feel like they're in a relationship and feel the heartbreak, the longing, etc. If you don't like the movie, I don't blame you, it's intentionally challenging and the overall point (to me) is that you shouldn't really care to understand it anyway. But I truly love it and I think it's a really beautiful use of the medium of film.
