Coinciding coming out of 2 back-to-back abusive relationships and The Event, leaning far too hard into working and productivity to give me a sense of worth, funnily enough bunnies really helped at this time where I was just living in fight-or-flight. Being out in nature, in fresh air, or at least mildly less polluted air, helped calm my nervous system... like I had more of a sense of the relative smallness of my problems in the grand scheme of life. Now I audio journal, which is basically a daily 20 minute rant into my phone to get it all out of my system. I really appreciate you both being open and honest about how difficult these past few years have been to you, how it has affected your mental health, and sharing how you move through it.

Love your format these days Paul. Mental health is made much easier if you eat homemade food, and walk a mile a day...if you can. I found the inflammatory response from processed food led to all sorts of problems that fed the poor mental health spiral.

Honestly, you saying how the world has felt broken and crazy for the past four years felt really validating - I wondered if it was just me feeling like nothing has been the same since 2020? Like, I grieve the life I was building for myself at the end of 2019, and Ive sometimes felt like the world has been in emergency/crisis mode since then - not just the pandemic, but since then there's been war, cost of living crisis, and constant political turmoil and terror. I feel like I've been running on empty since 2022, constantly burned out and struggling with anxiety since then, not able to make the videos I love and stuff. Add in things like losing my nan earlier this year, and its been...horrible. Anxiety and panic attacks are SO exhausting on their own. And sometimes I just want to cry, and mourn the feeling that life is passing me by and I can't do anything about it. And I totally relate to what you say about pulling back and feeling like you're not present as much as you want to be - I've cut back massively on social media as I was getting horrendous anxiety over my timelines constantly being bombarded 'you need to care about this' - war, genocide, climate change, social injustice, everything. I *want* to care about it all, but...its exhausting just keeping myself alive. And coping and surviving is a huge achievement in itself. Always. Also, bunnies totally do help with MH. Its a fact xD Lots of love to you both. Thank you for sharing all of this. 💖

Omg, you've hit the nail on the head by saying how the world has felt in a constant emergency/crisis mode for the past few years. And I totally get what you mean by 'I want to care about it all, but it's exhausting just keeping myself alive'. That sums it up perfectly.

I relate so hard to the "can't be social" right now. It takes so much energy to be social and happy and upbeat for your friends and even if they say "we don't want you to be happy for us!" You do it anyway because I feel like you can't help it? It's some sort of ingrained social thing we have no real control over. After my mum passed away I'd be terrified of the phone going off encase it was someone calling me to tell be bad news. When you're relaxed and trying to sleep THAT'S when the anxiety comes over you, because "Oh... I'm relaxed, I shouldn't be!" Sanja talking about the energy, is something I do! I'm a firm believer that you have to get the energy out of our system in some way or another, even if that's screaming, shouting, crying, hitting a pillow etc Maybe your way of "working" is just your way of getting it out of your system! Art, creating, making is an art form and a way of getting emotions, stress, thoughts and feelings out of your system! In making these videos, in working and keeping yourself afloat and distracting yourself is probably also helping others by being their distraction from their own problems and anxiety. On a funnier side: There's one of those "manosphere" influencers who said his cure for people with depression is to sit and every night... Think about someone coming into your home and killing all your family members, horrifically and brutally 😍 And that'll sort you right out!

You are both blessed to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. The countryside there is awe inspiring. I live in the desert of Arizona, and it's beautiful here in its own way, but watching walking videos in England is my happy place while working from home. It's like another planet! The vortex's and ancient portals that exist there are very interesting! I would live there if I could! $$$. That place in the 80s was something else, too!! We used to camp there when I was a kid, and my dad would attend an annual motorcycle run where certain clubs would meet up. The eclectic mix of outlaws, cowboys, and artists was cool to watch while growing up. Instagram and TikTok have made it a really popular place to visit now. Spring and fall are the perfect times for visiting weather wise, and it can get a little crowded, but if you go off the beaten path, there are so many hidden gems to be experienced ❤️😍

Thankyou for your openness and honesty. The most valuable lesson I have learned in the last few years is to open up to people you trust. Im a domestic abuse survivor of an 18 year marriage, and left with PTSD symptoms and crippling anxiety. for 4 years I didn’t deal with it, and thought that talking was pointless and it wasn’t going to help. I wasn’t allowed to have friends go out or do anything and was a prisoner. Its taken a long time to rehabilitate into the big world and its a scary place, but talking and opening up has helped me beyond what i thought was possible, I’m now with the most wonderful person, I struggle daily and when im having flashbacks its not always easy to talk but i feel safe and that means the world to me. I wish you both well and all the love in the world. ❤

You guy's are the people's voice right now. I've been watching since I first saw the canary wharf video. I think you both have something viable. I kind of feel like I'm watching channel 4/5. Maybe I'm having a crystal ball moment lol. But its definitely good content. I think what you both are trying to say was it's hard to grow and fight at the same time when the body is designed to either do fight or flight. Covid was designed to do exactly what you are going through. I'm dealing with the same issues. If this is destroy and rebuild then we are all apart of the process...you already know what they do to people in the army.

Yes, it's like being pulled in two opposite directions! So maybe the trick is to use something like the aikido philosophy and sidestep, or use the force of the fight/flight to propel us into growth/the direction we want to go it? (Terrible example as I don't really know much about aikido lol)

I work in the NHS and yesterday went to an event hosted by Ripple Touch. That's RIPPLE, with an R... We were asked to write down all our roles in life, such as father, husband, teacher, worker, social media botherer etc and score each 1 to 10, with 10 being the most energy we spend on. Then doing the same for what we should spend our energies on and how to achieve it. While I'm neither a husband or father I could see I was spending all my energy on one particular role and not having enough for more important ones. We were also taught double-breathing as a means to reduce anxiety and stress. Breathe in to fill the lungs about 80% then breathe again to fill the remaining 20% and breathe out slowly through the nose. Doing so stimulates the capillaries removing CO2 and slowing your heart rate. It works frighteningly well for something that's so easy to do.

Secondly something that I try to do whenever I remember (adhd gang) is keep a diary of good things that have happened, even if it's something trivial like "I tried some new crisps that were really good" it's good to have something to look back on that isn't full of negatives. Especially when we're getting to this time of year I start to get the feeling that another years over and I've done nothing it's nice to have a note of everything good that's happened whether that's completing a game I've been stuck on or meeting up with friends and having a laugh.

Discussing stuff out in the open is always the best approach to dealing with things. It releases pressure. Crying is another pressure release, it's not a weakness, it makes you stronger. However, KZbin crying videos probably don't work, so just stick with the discussion vids. On a personal level, I've had anxiety ever since I did my GCSEs in the early 90s (it helped me fail all 7 exams), it held me back in life, so I had poorly paid jobs and only recently have I managed to get to a level that I feel comfortable. I had counselling 15 years ago and it helped me to understand and cope with it. Being active helps your brain stay strong: walking, running, cycling, sports, etc helps pump oxygen through it. A better diet also helps a great deal too. Find a way to get more vitamins (I started eating corn flakes, for instance). Pretty much everything you and Sanja mentioned in the video is all good advice, and you only know it works when you put them into practise.

Mine is singing in the shower and going into town just for a wander about. Have a long shower and do some serious self care first thing in the morning because there’s something truly satisfying about a Les Mis medley which really resets myself. Your videos help a lot and as silly as Beanus is it helped me and my gf when she spent most of this and last year in hospital. You help a lot of people move forward. Thank you both, keep going as best you can. Edit: After Dickus? Sounds like my very good friend from Rome called Biggus…. Edit 2: My wife (we’re poly) has a TBI (traumatic brain injury) as a result of brain damage. This is in no way akin to dementia, however, the feelings, the symptoms are the same in a way. It is bloody hard and you should be so proud of yourselves for working through this and being there for her. Headway helped us a lot, and I know when a family member was also actively going through dementia, Dementia UK were really helpful too. Silliness aside, the TBI has been so hard and I have learnt to take it one moment at a time, sometimes one day, one hour, one minute. You got this.

Amazingly kind of you to let others in on your struggles and still provide helpfull tips and ways you cope. Personally i struggle for a while longer but i do hear the sugar based coping and drowning oneself in writing (tho in my case it is just a way to dump bad brains out rather than anny meaningful or nuanced storytelling). The "here and now" whilst sounding like its from star wars ep 1 dose make sense, my personal itteration of the idea is to try and worry solely about things i can do a thing about at the time (not that i follow the advice, i just give it and than worry freely about things in past or future i can not influence... bad brains). Whilst i can offer but words i wish upon you better times, kinder world and less life shaking problems. May you always have sufficient respite and bring each other joy.

Another excellent video I found both entertaining & genuinely comforting! Self-help material is really good content fodder. I relate to Sanja's tendency to anticipate the worst possible outcomes. Plenty of good advice in here. I've always been an advocate for talking about how you feel, whether that be "in person" or via some form of journalling. In my teens, I kept a diary (which I ended up throwing out because I was too embarrassed by what was in there, and now regret) and since the mid-00s, I have blogged in one form or another. I have a blog for video games (one of my main hobbies and professional interests) that I update sporadically, and another that I post on daily for just... stuff. Stuff that I want to express, that doesn't necessarily have a common theme, that I just want to get out my head onto the "page". I do it publicly, because I know first-hand how helpful it can be to know others are going through or feeling the same things you are, even if the person who is experiencing the same things as you doesn't have any specific advice on how to deal with things. Even if no-one read it or replied, though, I'd still find the experience valuable just because I had acknowledged those feelings and expressed them somehow, rather than letting them fester inside. Sure, there will unfortunately always be people who think you're "moaning" or that you're "never happy" -- even if you provide evidence to the contrary -- but I'd rather be someone willing to talk about struggles openly and honestly than someone who suffers in silence.

Seeing wild bunnies help my mental health. Don't knock them. 😀 The NHS is currently obsessed with journalling. I cant get into it. And CBT. I have depression long term and was a carer for my dad which got more difficult when he got arthritis aged 70 and later dementia. I mostly worked full time in an office job too so was always busy with no energy. Im good in emergencies but less so at day to day life. I don't have any great coping techniques but I would have a day trip away or a weekend away when i could. I like gardening and watching live music. I like taking photos and walking by the coast. Dementia is horrible but i knew i had done the most i could to help my dad and any sense of guilt lifted when he passed away. Visit them as often as you can. My dad never forgot me or my name. But this can vary with the type of dementia. You never regret spending too much time with an elderly parent. I did speak to an Admiral (dementia); nurse at some point but had already researched every damn thing i could think of so she thoughr i was doing well. Thanks for sharing your struggles with us viewers. We shall get through the tough times. 👍🏻

Bunnies rock! 🐇And yeah, journaling isn't for everyone. But it sounds like you have found things that work for you to help you through. Dementia effing sucks. The worst thing about the type Paul's mum has is that she doesn't really even have any moments of being herself again, not even a glimpse, so it feels like she's not herself anymore. It's so tough, my heart goes out to anyone who's gone through seeing a parent or loved one go through anything like this.

I really relate to every single word you've both said! My mum had leukemia, then when she recovered my dad suddenly died, then my nans health deteriorated a lot and my mum got breast cancer. Then my nan was really unwell, was having lots of falls and serious infections, then she passed away. I was living in survival mode for so many years, maybe more than 10 years easily. I was getting these awful adrenaline rushes and anxiety every time I actually relaxed. I was ready for the next awful phone call, the next disaster. The only other tip I can add is audiobooks, I'm pretty sure they saved my sanity. The silence became my enemy because like Paul was saying the thoughts rushed in. So I started listening to audiobooks, even as I drift off to sleep, and writing down all my worries like Sanja was describing. Getting out in the fresh air is a major thing for me too. I'm sorry for what you're going through, my grandad had Alzheimer's and it's so difficult. The dread of visits, the guilt, the heartbreak. And exactly as you said Paul, you get through it because you've got no other choice

informal aged care, anxiety and debt are things that go hand in hand, and i believe our society still tries to make individuals feel solely responsible for the life of a human who contributed to social security all their working life and isn't getting quality care from the state. this topic hurts for me, and ill just say that my profoundly mentally ill mother died three months ago from the cardiac stress of two years of caring for my disabled grandmother, without having ever received anything similar to help from the gvt. we got my nan into a decent (paid, private) home, but it was too late for my mother's heart. and now it's just me and dad, both autistic, dealing with the grief and debts... while depression is certainly dependant on a load of genetic and lifestyle factors, it can't be dissociated from our broken system.

@Digitiser Is it OK to recommend you as an interview guest for another comedy YT channel I am deeply fond of who do guest interviews often? They are also struggling, one of them having to start a job to pay the rent. It's famous-ish and a good fit for some of your earlier YT work, but you could certainly talk about current stuff and the TV work. They are politically not far from your positions too by the way.

Okay, haven't had time to watch this video but apparently I'm pretty out of the loop, I usually binge watch a channel and then kind of forget about it for a while... What happened to all the old videos? I can still hear that old intro in my head (damn it's good), but yeah apparently something significant happened recently ish? I also could have sworn you had way more subscribers, was the chanel hacked or did KZbin do some classic youtube bs? Kind of a shock to only find 46 videos now.

No no. We had far fewer subscribers. We were stuck on 16,000-ish for years. Nothing significant happened other than we wanted to change what we did. The old videos are still there in a playlist, but they're unlisted so as not to confuse new and old: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXqVoZasa910nsk

@@Digitiser Ah, that's good, I'm glad you kept the old content available and 100% respect and understand the desire to change things up. I know long form content is something the KZbin algorithm of craps on especially for small channels, but there's definitely an audience, I'll certainly be checking some of the new stuff out.

@@JunctionRunner Oh indeed! We'll never wipe away the past - we had to make it unlisted because it was just stopping the channel growing, as we were only getting recommended to Cheapshow's audience! Worry not - we might've changed our format a bit, but we'll still be doing lots of the same sort of stupid stuff too.

I (Paul) am a screenwriter. Used to be for the big broadcasters, but now I'm working with smaller writers and people who want their ideas developed into scripts. Sanja handles the business/office side of it - the accounts, invoicing etc. Also, while we may not be the biggest channel on YT, we have a healthy Patreon community, and I couldn't do everything I do for Digi without her. She's been editing for our second channel, she sets up our live shows - all that sort of thing.
