Update: I did some testing to see how big of an SD card you could use in it and I can confirm that a 32GB card worked. The 64GB card I tried didn't seem to work but it was formatted as ExFAT. It just seemed to hang when I put it in the device.

Rick, what editing software do you use bud? Do the files drop straight on or do you have to handbrake? I'm using Davinci Resolve.

Hi.. Thanks for taking the time to post this, I found it very informative. I’ve set myself the task of converting some Hi8 tapes of my honeymoon 20 years ago as a surprise for my wife, and my initial investigations have left me a bit overwhelmed by it all tbh. I saw this device advertised, but wasn’t sure if it would do the job, but watching this has left me a little more confident. I do have a question…scaled up? I assume this means improving the picture quality (?), so how did you do this? Thanks again 👍🏻

hello!! i was thinking buying one of this but im not sure about the finish quality resolution, the final resolution is 640x480 in PC right? so with a normal converter like Elgato converter i get i think 720x480 do you know if the final Quality change? or with every Video capturer at the end the resolution is the same ? i just wanna make sure i get the old look but with out losing resolution in the process :)

I must admit that footage when not upscaled looks the cleanest I’ve seen. the_ageing_nerd did a video on why you need to digitise now. This seems like it would fit the job. I spent a lot of money to get my setup to convert. It might be an artefact in the video but the lower left of the units screen looks like the crystal layer was broken and had leaked. I wonder if it can cope with macro vision.

A few years ago I compared a few different options for capturing composite video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqTKdWauZrNlgas The best quality was with a composite to HDMI adapter connected to an HDMI capture device. I am currently transferring a bunch of tapes with this DIGITNOW converter because the quality is good and it is easy to do. I see no point in using a complicated setup for marginally better video when this device is simple and easy to use. I would use the HDMI method if I was capturing text on a vintage computer but for regular video, this is working great. I see what you mean on the screen. The pixels look good so I think it might be some contamination on the screen. I haven't tried it with macrovision.

I just snagged this the other day. I'm having an issue where I can't record more than 10 seconds of footage or else it will corrupt itself. I'm using a high quality card formatted in FAT32 32 cluster size (as close to the stock card settings that came with it). Even on the stock card any video over 10 seconds just turns into a large file screenshot with a 0/0 second runtime in VLC. I've even tried doing multiple unit resets and I can't find a firmware update anywhere. I'm running the same firmware version as yours in the video.

Try different SD card, mostly a smaller memory size and write speeds (kb/s)

I have a question, i have the exact setup that you're using for your video. The camera to the digitnow when i play the video on the camera, it doesn't show on the digitnow. Plus I'm getting a buzzing noise on the digitnow. Any suggestions?

i recently bought one of these and used it, when having both my camcorder and the device on i get this annoying static and i’m wondering if any of yall can help me figure out how to get rid of it? besides that the audio is good.

Are you getting static on the video or audio? If you unplug one or the other, does it go away? Have you tried a different RCA cable set?

If the composite terminals are outputting a signal, this should be able to record it. I'm guessing most cameras output to composite when not recording so it should work.

I have a problem with the capture, I have shown the video well, but when I see the files the video cuts and jumps like the re-start many times Is it possible to fix this problem? I have changed the card and kept the problem...other times file after capture shows failed....

Hard to say what is causing that. Are you using good quality microSD cards? You might also try formatting them with the SD Card Formatter software from the SD card association. www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/

When you insert the memory card into your computer, you can read and copy files from it like a flash drive. You can then view the videos on the card or you computer with software like VLC Player.

My device quality is terrible compering to yours. Have video - sound not sync, and some strange picture artefacts. Im sending mine back as it's not worth a penny. Thanks for sharing.

Will it work for a mini dv camera?

It would but mini DV cameras store their video digitally. Using this you would be converting the video from digital to analog and back to digital. This can degrade the quality. The best way to get video off a mini DV camera would be to connect it directly to a computer with an iLink or Firewire cable. Unfortunately modern computers don't come with those ports. You can get an older used Mac or PC (Sony's commonly had iLink ports) to transfer the video.

I'm relatively proficient at converting video using a computer but when a family member asked me to convert a bunch of tapes, I used this since it was easier and it wasn't going to tie up my computer for hours. Worked great!

Everything is proven you can keep that for your self people like myself are fixing a break vhs movies with Scotch tape it starts playing again with out no problem's everything proven people like y'all have a problem with people having vhs tapes now days

Those people are grating, but do be aware that some of us here looking for this stuff are primarily using tapes, but also want to share the footage we shoot via youtube, email, etc. we're also archivists looking to ensure that the tapes we find are saved and available for anyone to watch.
