The Hanging Gardens of Babylon have never been found, and we still can’t prove they even existed in the first place. Our evidence for them only comes from ancient Greek and Roman writers, centuries after they were supposedly built. The gardens are an enigma, and definitely the most mysterious of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. So let’s look at some of the history of Babylon, other royal gardens in Mesopotamia, and compare classical writings with the archaeological record.

The Mystery of the Hanging Garden of Babylon: An Elusive World Wonder Traced by Stephanie Dalley (2015) amzn.to/3yRZGKq
Despite all the excavating and research done, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon have never been identified, and their actual existence has never actually been proven. As a consolation, even if the gardens never existed, we do know that the city walls of Babylon did, and they still do today in some sense. And if we’re taking other ancient lists of the seven wonders into account, like Strabo’s then no matter what, Babylon can safely stay on the permanent list!

Well, I really believe that both cities had their own gardens, but since Babylon was bigger and richer than Nineveh, their gardens were purposely bigger, perhaps to show how powerful Babylon was now, since these cities were enemies at that time.

Ok, have to share. Picture this, Babylon January 2004, US Army convoys linking up next to the city wall heading from Mosul down to Kuwait. There along a wall, hanging basket planters. Yes, on a city wall of Babylon, hanging garden baskets. This sight exists now only in my memory as I did not have a camera on hand.

Wow! Great story and great presentaton. I love your ironic twinkle and you subtle sarcasm, something often missing in all to freakingly serious archaeology. Your examination here reminds me of an illustration in an early 19th century zoological text book that I own. There is a beautiful engraving of what is labled as a hippopotamus. The animal pictured looks like a very fat short legged horse with a disproportionately large head. Obviously the artist had never seen a hippo and drafted it taking the Greek word meaning "river horse" quite literally and perhaps with a little more verbal visual assistance from someone else who also may have never seen a hippo. It may well be the same with the "hanging gardens". Thanks for sharing how and what you see.

Ha! Raven, I'm thinking there was an ancient Babylonian PR person: "A wall. Really? That's NOT going to stir people hearts and imaginations for centuries to come. Hmmm. Let's say there was an impressive GARDEN! Everybody likes gardens! Floating....hanging...something! The great thing is...their own MINDS will fill in the details!" Archaeologists have found remains of a few terraced gardens and evidence of canals and fields surrounding the city, but no trace or evidence of the Hanging Gardens in Babylon. The reason is that it is about the wrong city and actually the wonderful gardens of the ancient writings were located in Nineveh. People were just dumber than today and their armchair geographers like Stabo, Josephus and Diodorus didn't know the difference between Nineveh and Babylon, and that's how the myth of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon was born. It was only much later that it was understood that if you wanted to explore a place or a site, you had to go there yourself and not rely on rumors and hearsay told by merchants and sailors.

I'm still all head scratchy about the claims about the color blue not existing in the ancient world when we have the Istar Gate, the "standard of Ur", and many other extremely ancient artifacts dating to the very beginning of civilization. It might be nice to revisit that, with a refutation describing the wealth of blue we have from the ancient world. :)
@naedanger123
@naedanger123 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I always thought that to be a misinterpretation of things. Yes, they may not have had a specific word to describe a specific blue, but how exactly does that turn into "they were unable to see that colour"? I figure it was really more a cultural perception than a literal one.

I have a question , We know that Baghdad was the biggest city in the middle ages And Baghdad was at the same place of Babylon and Assyria How come there’s no Arab or Persian sources spoke about this at all ? And most of what we know about it comes from European accounts during the renaissance?
@fawazjarbo6448
@fawazjarbo6448 9 ай бұрын
Ibnil gahba… Arabs were t in this area. The closest they were was northern saudia or the very southern tip of Iraq. If they were Arabs back then there they were most likely slaves. This area belonged to chaldeans Assyrians Akkadian’s and Sumerians!!!! Know ur information before you speak. I assume ur arab and are probably a little biased. You mentioned Persians when they were probably the people who destroyed or didn’t want it in history!!!

Fun fact Babylon is actually not Babylon name. It may be named 250 time in bible and 2 time in Quran as babil. However the greek couldn't call it the original name which kassite gave. The Kish was the main city and slowly the Kish people moved to the new city we know today as Babylon. The city of Kish was attacked by Asirian who also attacked the 12 Kingdome earlier(Israel, Palestine etc). We know Babylon attacked Asiria to retaliate against Asirian. And during this period some more migration of Kish people occured.

@@fawazjarbo6448 name by greek who could not pronoucd the city. Yet the belived sumeeian was part of southern mesopotania. After all there is a civilisation of sumerians such as kish ,urk and shush which are equaly important. Such as babylon was made by urk king next to most important city of early civilidation kish. King of kish was the king of kings. Near iran we have a sea called caspian sea which id a lake. The capsi word vomes feom kapsi people that lived in that region. Acording to hindu books it is named after one of theeir rishi kasyap who is said to be father of asur , devta etc. I belomg to this ethenicity beacuse my ansestor once originate from kish. Places such as afghanistan kash proveince , mirpur khas , kashmar and kashmir in pakistan , kashmor and kashan in iran, kash ghar in china , kashipur , kashi and kashmir of india are directly named after these people. Who have various name roman csll them kasite. In centrsl asia kushan, in china yartse tribe , in nepal pahde people, in south asia they are mostly know as khasas and khas people. From the distance of babylon to the distance of kish. Which are right next to each other. These two city people and their decendents are named in every religion. Or have presence in them. For example kashas are labeled in hindu epic of mahabharat. Nepal birth place of buddha is made of 75% khas people and the langauge nepsli originates from it. If you tske blood sample of khas people in nepal you have direct conmection with people living near caspian sea. Something dome iranian or iraq may not have as they been in period of influence from within and from outsider. Khas people of nepal only marrief with khas people and therefore we still see this comection. Before i say how lomg was this transition to nepal well my own family have 40 generation living in nepal. Before tjis they csme through china. We also know the great trade route of silk road which nepal was connected with persian. After all monks in nrpsl sky csves which are mumified still have jewelery made of stone that was only found in persisn empire. If roman coin can be found in csmbodia and budha statue in place like viking and roman empire. Many thing can happen we just need To match the dots.

Here’s a theory that’ll make you laugh. During this period in time the Babylonians crucified 10,000 people. 10,000 crosses with people hanging from them in the city hence The Hanging Gardens of Babylon??? 😂 in 3000 years maybe history will refer to the Ovens of Germany and people may think the Germans made a lot of bread??? Sometimes people gloss over the atrocities of a nation to reflect a more gentle society
