For this reason this was a very hard watch. You cant teach his creativity nor can he explain it. Its natural to him and thats why no one has managed to come even close to his vlogs. He is a 1 of 1. Some things he can say like known things about positioning the camera, framing etc. but the rest is his uniqe experience and milions of hours spent filming and editing that cant and will not ever be replicated.

To record, or edit, one moment, and just move straight to the next moment, trusting the process to take you to the realization of the idea you have in your head. It inspires me to ignore the inner critic, to not let overthinking get in the way of doing.

I agree, I feel that to an extent Casey is letting the inner critic be, but not giving into it. There needs to be some sort of critical "this is the way to do this," but the way to do it is to just let things flow naturally. In my eyes, it's the inner and outer struggles that bring life to his video. They create a story arc, which he packages so playfully into well executed, intriguing videos.

I've always wondered if it slows down my process because this is exactly how I edit the videos - but it always feels good when i drop the last clip in the timeline and I'm know I'm done.

It does slow your process down and more importantly it has a lot of potential for unnecessary work. Sometimes it is better for the overal endproduct to leave some things out. If you edit those things and do color and text only to realize that it doesnt work for the story, you waste time. Also it is always faster to batch things together. If you do text you can open a workspace that allows you to text efficiently, for color the same thing. The more you switch the more time you lose. With that being said, you should do whatever gives you the best end result and most enjoyable experience while editing.

I swear, I don't know what it is but every video I've seen where these 2 interact it seems like Jack is so interested and star struck by Casey's art but it honestly just seems like Casey is just annoyed by him and not really into it. At least, compared to how he interacts with other people he seems genuinely happy compared to this when it's I just like he's over it and putting on a mask because the cameras recording. I kinda feel bad for Jack like he doesn't get the credit he deserves for his art, music and businesses (one of them being that he created patreon).

This video is incredible. It shows that Casey wasn't eager on the interview and was trying to skim off things at the start but your digging deeper into his psyche helped reveal a lot of what goes behind the scenes. It's highly relatable because as people who made a conscious decision to make films and learn about the process are mostly insecure about whether they have what it takes. Hence, the pursuit to find what drives creative people to do what they do starts. Something that surprisingly helped me edit videos was learning guitar. It’s not practical advice for everything and I think there’s other ways to achieve this mindfulness, but when you’re playing guitar (as a learner) you don’t have time to think. You just have to feel the rhythm and play the notes. Every time I started thinking or putting logic into it I’d make a mistake and my teacher would tell me to stop thinking. This has helped me editing a lot. Like music, videos have a rhythm to them. It’s not something your supposed to actively think about, you just feel it. It sounds counterintuitive but this “not thinking” is key to becoming a master of any skill. Thinking has a time and place, but sometimes you need to feel too.

after working with casey the last 6 months... heres a few things, film in order, edit in order and do one thing only at a time ALWAYS. when filming a scene, only film 1 scene until good, next scene, and so on. edit, one video at a time. focus on thing at a time. btw glad you enjoyed the chatGPT video... the motion work took a while

But by doing that you really miss the "secret" of the sauce. But YOUR video is amazing, because it shows how much of what Casey does, capturing and telling a great story, has become intuitive to his thinking. And the fact that he does not calculate everything, proof of how doing the work and practicing the craft, allows it to come out of him in such a natural and entertaining way. I can’t do that in video, but after 20 years of photography, everything he describes in his process is exactly what I do. what he means by " create cronologicly"?

@@Malena-Orso Hello. I am unsure if that was a question, but creating chronologically is filming a story with only a basic intro, incidents, and closing outline. Then, filming the storyline while adding in additional segments that happen to come up during filming. In short, Casey is a guerilla filmmaker while he is filming the random things that happen to make the videos more engaging. The chronological piece is that it is all filmed in order so that all he has to do is edit the clips as the fall in the timeline.

@@Malena-Orso Casey is certainly an accomplished video blogger. He has discussed in many videos about his editing process in that he uses a 3-act-structure with a main theme idea in each video. What made him one of the first to gain notoriety in it is that he was able to incorporate each main idea into a vlog format where he could capture random things during each day of filming that added excitement and entertainment. To answer your question, I think it is very important to have a key idea for each video. While I do not do KZbin, I do video production and story is everything. Being able to introduce a situation and bring it to either a climactic resolve or leave it hanging for the next video is great for creating suspense.
