History
The class D III locomotives of the Royal Bavarian State Railroad were tank locomotives designed for shunting and for commuting and scheduled services (Vizinalbahn and Localbahn).
Georg Krauss had a locomotive of this type repeatedly at the 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna, being a development of the B VII, and this presupposed that machines of this type were ordered from him by various companies.
The locomotives were partly used for suburban branch line service and partly for shunting stations, such as those in Munich and Ingolstadt, but also in Lindau, where they were used on the ferries that run on Lake Constance. They were withdrawn from service between 1894 and 1897 and were replaced by Class D IV.
