“In philosophy, systems theory, science, and art, emergence occurs when a complex entity has properties or behaviors that its parts do not have on their own, and emerge only when they interact in a wider whole” Lot of that going on in that fake room.

I am on at least my 50th watch/listen of this in a week. I think this is maybe the greatest film/evidence as to why people need to be in a room to truly create something magnificent. Plenty of music is made alone these days and it is great, but there is something undeniable about being in the same room as other musicians creating. This is beyond belief. Can’t imagine what it would be like to be in the room.

This is like Bright Eyes, d’angelo, Bon Iver, Frank Ocean, Springsteen with a dash of Wilco all rolled into one unique and amazing artist. It comes at just the right time and is completely moving. Kids take note…the emotion and creativity that occurs in a room with people is mesmerizing. I think many of us that play music can relate to the feeling this video conveys with your voice blown out, your fingers hurting and the fog of too many beers as the clock pushes towards 3am with your buds…but god damn I don’t think many of us have sounded this tight it that chaos.

This video parades as a drunken jam sesh to the superficial gaze, yet is an expression to the depths of emotion and agony of both loss and hope. I feel like my freakin' soul was torn out and shaken. Every fiber of my being is tingling. The artistry, vocals, visages, instruments, unassuming style -- all of it blended so beautifully. It's a chaotic, raw, artful experience. I'm very thankful. (honorable mentions to the Ginuwine and Vanessa Carlton riffs, the Totoro shirt, and the scene of Dijon stumbling outside - I can just imagine how crisp that air must have felt & reminded me of my time living in WA)

sad that The Dress wasn’t included in this but watching the part for Rodeo Clown had me nearly in tears. i think both of those song specifically resonate with me because it’s how i used to feel for the longest time. someone who didn’t want me like i wanted them and the aftermath of being “just friends” really tore me apart for a while. luckily im no longer experiencing this but to me, those songs helped me with fully closing that chapter of my life. the emotions this album in general put me through was something i’ve only felt maybe 2 other times. so thank you Dijon, i can’t wait to see you be as big as frank one day

A true work of raw and honest work. Something so sincere and amazing about a warmly lit room with little room, filled with instruments and musicians. Bouncing off each other, fireworks of noise and art being created in this cramped room, and for us to witness such work is “ABSOLUTELY” a privilege. The bursts of noise, the off keys, the rawness in Dijon’s voice, Dijon’s ability to engage with everyone in the room, everything about this is perfect. Sad to hear this won’t be on the internet for very long. It makes art what it is, a fleeting joy we appreciate and gaze at while it’s present. Thank you to Dijon and everyone who made this film possible. Album of the year…

Simply, wow. This film was amazing the entire way through. To Jack: the direction and mix was superb. Your storytelling was amazing. The editing was on point. I truly felt at times that I was there and was constantly finding myself captivated by the film. What a talent you have for this. I’ll be sure to follow your next projects. To Dijon: I doubt you’ll ever read this, but thank you. Thank you for making my favorite album of the year. Thank you for making one of my favorite albums ever. It will forever be cemented in my top 5. Thank you for telling your story, and being so vulnerable in the film. I feel for you. Especially in the Rodeo Clown scene. I’ve only watched this through once so my thoughts haven’t fully be collected, but I appreciate your willingness to share your story with the world and consider myself lucky to have witnessed your art. I can’t wait to see this record live in April when I make the trip to St. Augustine from Kansas City! Big ups to everyone involved in the album and the film. You’ve all outdone yourselves!

I have an interpretation of this album/video. From what I've gathered from listening to this performance/album, it delves into relationships, with the good and bad parts shown (mostly the bad parts though). Both the video and album start with Big Mike, a song where Dijon is singing about begging a partner to accept him and "take" him. He is surrounded by everyone in a closed off, 4 wall ranch home type set. As the video goes on, it goes into scratching and talk down. I don't have much to say about these two except that I assume that they are about being in a relationship (I mean talk down is a song about how he loves some ones voice idk man). As it progresses into Annie, another Love Song, it shows the set getting progressively darker outside, and Dijon is getting noticeably exhausted, showing the strain that this relationship is causing him. In Many Times, it culminates into Dijon's anger and his freak-out that happens in the lyrics and at the end when he runs outside to catch some air. He comes back inside to Rodeo Clown where all this hurt amasses into him breaking furniture and throwing bottles. He drunkenly belts out these heartfelt lyrics that convey a feeling of despair. At this point it is completely Dark on the set and he is completely exhausted. He then runs under a door and away from the soundstage into the sky. I think the visuals of the ranch style home (an homage of sorts to Dijon's sound and inspiration), and the use of a set instead of a traditional stage conveys a sort of feeling of it being "fake." As if the expectation of this relationship is a picture perfect one, compared to the reality and difficulty that is in maintaining a good relationship. I think this idea is also backed up by the artificial lighting, and when the people recording started taking photos of Dijon. This could relate to the lyric "airing our dirty laundry" (putting things on display kind of). I think the part where he escapes outside symbolizes his realization that things don't have to be this way, then going into rodeo clown and him singing about feeling like a clown. (This is a little rough around the edges because I thought of it a couple weeks ago and it was much fresher in my mind then. So if things don't make any sense at all that is my fault, that is if anyone even reads this at all). TLDR; this video symbolizes the struggles of a bad relationship and the strain it has on Dijon.

There's a pine on fire and your eyes get wide Excited by the violence it inspires There's a spark on the way Oh, Joanne! I'm stuck, oh Joanne I'm tired And you say, "Oh man, well you can't out-run it" And it can't be undone Shadows jumpin' like puppets and laughin' at you There were times I lied But there were times where you were clapping and laughing You were honest times, too There were times you cried So I said extend your giving hand, Joanne, and I'll cry with you But I know, I know that I cannot change it And it can't be undone Shadows stretchin' and scratchin' at your heels where you run But I know, I know that I cannot change it And it can't be undone Shadows stretchin' and scratchin' at your heels where you run

I think about how amazing it was to watch 8 hours of footage with the Beatles and loving the collaborative experience and how it has evolved over the years. Great music doesn't always reach the biggest audience but it always reaches the - right audience. Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing this gem with us, Dijon. Newest fan!

I had the blessing of seeing them open for Bon Iver when he was on tour, and it was ethereal. I find myself coming back to this video/ regularly and it never gets old. Dijon is generational talent. I sincerely hope he gets the recognition he deserves. This album has done so much for my life and well being. THANK YOU

The Dress has so much potential as a single/music video. I'm in-visioning the music video to have a reunion between ex-lovers, with flashbacks to an 80s prom. That's the essence I imagine when listening to the song.
