Kind of reminds me of the four archangels invoked in four directions in the lesser banishing ritual of the pentagram that is popular among modern Hermeticists. Norse mythology names four dwarves called Austri (East), Vestri (West), Nodri (North), and Sudri (South) who hold up the sky, whom Northern Tradition shamans view as primal deities of the Duergar (dwarves) - though people who mostly work with non-dwarvish astral races such as the Aesir might be more inclined to invoke Valkyries or other entities they already have relationships with in the directions for protection from harmful influences during shamanic rites.
