What up dilly…. In terms of the “get good” phase… for someone who has no musical background… and is just starting out… what are some things a producer can do to make better Melodies specifically??? Is it as simple as just watching MORE KZbin tutorials??? Should I get piano lessons?? Is booking sessions with local established producers a good idea early on?? How long should/would it take for me to get respectable??? How important is hands on training?? I’ve been part time for a little over 2 years… prolly made about 200 beats… I’ve got a lot better at sampling arrangements drums and mixes… but not a whole lot of growth on the melody/ make it all from scratch side (yes I know this is the hard part 🤣) thanks for all the uploads and inspo!!! 🥶💯🙏🏻

I think there is a couple different factors and it depends on what your goals are. I was kind of lucky in the fact that the niche I wanted to be in was also one of the biggest. So I feel like you want to pick something you enjoy and is sustainable, but also has the potential to be big one day. Good questions to think about are “what do I like to do?” and “what’s the ceiling for this niche and am I ok with that?”

You could pull off multiple beats a day, but only if they’re high level and on brand imo. If you do that, then it’s simple as the more you post the better. Like if you dropped 3 crazy on brand beats a day for a year that would be sick. But if it’s 3 mediocre beats you’re just spamming, then I would slow down and focus on picking better samples, having cleaner drums etc

Thanks for watching! If I'm laser focused, have a fire loop/sample ready to go. I could probably do it in 45 mins. If I'm half focused 1-1.5 hours and if I don't have a sample 3-4 hours sometimes to find something dope to work with and If I'm creating the melody from scratch 3-6hrs probably

I have a question about branding. So I’m an artist who writes and releases songs and I mainly want to be known for that as I’m trying to build a fanbase. I've been through the same journey. I like to keep my beats and samples separate. It's hard to be objective flipping your own samples. I think in general your beats will be better using other peoples samples and it'll put less pressure on your samples. That's been my experience. Make beats with others, send your own out

My question is, is it too late in 2023 to make type beat in the style of certain artists (for example Logic, Mac Miller, J. Cole). I mean there are hundreds of people out there making these type beats. My current guess is that if i stay on this lane consistently it will work, but it may take years to get there.

No problem bro, thanks for watching! Yeah it's always evolving, I don't think those beats are as popular as they would have been in 2018ish but there's still opportunity, you can start with smaller artists that are in a similar lane and build up to the bigger names. Or maybe do a Mac Miller "K.I.D.S" type beat or something like that. Consistent is important but only if you're doing the right actions, like working on building a brand, putting out high quality stuff etc.

The thing with the competition is that maybe 100's of people did those beats a few times, but like I said in this video if you become known as the best Mac Miller type beat producer and you deliver consistently you'll surpass the people that do it once in a while

So I think you're on the right path 100% as long as you stay at it, I definitely think your channel will get big for sure. So I don't know what your goals are, but if you want to grow your channel I would pick the type of beat that is the most successful on your channel, maybe the soul stuff and go hard af with that lane. It's tough because I bet you don't want to limit yourself, but you would grow faster doing that. And then if you want to sell more than I would work on simplifying your drums. Your drums are dope and I respect the live elements. I would study guys like Pilotkid, Stoic and Lucas Quinn and pay attention to how they do fire unique drums but keep them simple and rap-able (most of the time)

Hey Dilly, I am facing a dilemma as I cannot decide which music genre to pursue. I have a passion for various genres including Drill, Cinematic Ambient, RnB, and Lo-Fi, but my true love lies in old-school RnB music. My circle of friends recognizes me for my RnB music, and I have been playing the keyboard for almost 20 years and making beats for a few years. I have received positive feedback on my social media posts from RnB legends such as Jodeci, Donell Jones, Harvey Mason Jr, and Hi Five. I am confident in my abilities and believe I have the potential to become even better if I focus on a specific music style/brand. However, I am struggling to decide which style will provide financial stability. I am almost 31 years old and feel the pressure to make a living, especially since I still live with my parents and have no responsibilities. While this situation is somewhat of a blessing, I also feel guilty because I want to support my parents as well. I am constantly feeling the pull towards pursuing my dream of selling music online, but I am held back by the limiting belief that nobody will be interested in my old-school RnB music. I have never been a fan of high-tempo or modern RnB music, and I keep convincing myself that I will not be able to make a living by selling my music unless I create trap-style or Drake-style hip hop beats. In my opinion you'd be best figuring out how to make one channel work and try to identify why it's not taking off, is it the beat quality? The branding? Consistency? Originality? The types of beats your making? Could be any of those things, but going after two would make it twice as hard imo

I would upload beats of more popular artists and they would get more views initially and also suggested by KZbin more but never ranked on search. I started to niche down and my videos are on the front page of search but it gets less views. However it does seem more consistent because the videos with bigger name artists would eventually die down in views while the ones on search would still get some daily

I feel like that's spot on, if you're able to run up Drake type beats and get recommended regularly do that. I think the most sustainable approach is to think about building an audience that likes you for a specific sound, so if you can do that, you're more invincible imo and have more longevity

1. Yeah bro, I think that model is great! 2. Definitely! I have friends like Stoic, Pilot Kid and Lucas Quinn and they have exactly that, of course they would scale more if they dominated their best category, but they like the creative freedom and they make dope stuff and they have a core group of people who like whatever they do, so it's totally possible. Not the fastest route, but could totally work if your skill is there

So I definitely go outside the music producer space to learn about branding/marketing stuff. If I remember correctly at first I tried to find people who sounded knowledgeable and had undeniable proven track records of success in their fields and then I would just listen to them and test it out and see if it worked. Some people I really like in the business space are Seth Godin, Tom Bilyeu, Gary Vee (I try to watch his actions, more than what he says) and even Mr. Beast, seriously. The best way to learn imo is to take in what credible people are saying, then apply it, assess the results, try to figure out why it worked or why it didn't, and then repeat and you get slightly better/more knowledgeable every time you try something

I stick to drill for my type beats but I pretty much do the whole genre and the top artists (sample, orchestral, dark, melodic, etc). Should a smaller type beat channel like me niche down even more to a few smaller artists only and then broaden my sound as I grow?

This is where it can get tricky, it's really about experimenting and testing at this point. You want to niche down to stand out, but then you don't want to go so small that you can't make any $ or you're limited. If you're getting good results covering the whole niche, I say keep doing it. You can also test and maybe pick the best performing sub niche and lock in with that in for a month straight and see if your views increase

Especially when results start coming in and the positive feedback it really helps. The way I look at it is, I'm giving other people what they want instead of focusing on myself and then I get rewarded for that. Sounds like a good system to me, and I get to make beats all day

I think I signed up for Mix With The Masters and I remember watching a lot of Ken Lewis videos back in the day, he did some Kanye, Cole stuff and a lot more, I also used to watch Pensado's place a lot. I think the big realizations I had from some of those is that they didn't do anything crazy, there was no secret that they were hiding, they just understood the fundamentals and did them well. Like Volume and cutting out lows is like almost everything, it's crazy

Hey Dilly. Great video thanks for making it. I have two questions for you as someone who's new to selling beats. 1) I wanted to know if I should limit the beats I sell to 1-2 genres as I'm get started with getting sales and finding an audience. For example, I make alot of lofi / east coast hip hop beats ( think kota the friend, mac miller or jcole) and R&B beats. How would you approach this if you were just getting started today? 2) Would you say it's better to post 1 beat a day to your store or batch upload them each week? Does that even matter as someone who's just getting their store up and running / building out their beat store catalog?

Thanks! So I'm going to answer this assuming that you want to make more sales, a lot of the advice depends on your goals 1. You're going to have more success in a lane if you can become known for it, so I'm assuming you're making smooth, lo-fi boom bap sounding stuff based on those artists, I would dial in that sound and work at becoming the best at it, and stick to it. However there's going to be a ceiling, but every lane has a ceiling, idk if that's the highest ceiling but I would say it's an above average ceiling as far as niche's go 2. If you have 7 great beats ready to go, I would schedule them to upload at the same time everyday for a week, to build brand recognition in the consumers mind. It's better if a consumer sees your name and thinks about you 7 days a week as opposed to thinking about you once every 7 days. Also it gives each beat a better shot. Make sure they're dope too, sometimes when I get too far ahead my quality drops, but that's just my personal experience, yours could be different.

That's a tough question, I've seen people do it before. That's definitely a better approach than trying to cover 2 niches on one channel. I think at the end of the day it's if you can handle running 2 channels at a high level, go for it, but sometimes what happens is both channels become mediocre and they go nowhere. So if you believe the quality on both of them are at the highest level than yeah 2 would be better than one, it's just very very difficult

My advice would be to stick to one niche per channel/avenue. For example on my type beat channel I stick to soul stuff, but on this channel my niche is "how to make a living as a music producer" not "how to make soul beats" and I can because it's a different channel and audience. So you could try multiple channels for different genres, but your best bet to make some $ is to have one channel and do it well

Yeah that happens for sure, sales are better in the winter, but also the macro economy surprisingly has a lot to do with beat sales. Also things like Covid and all that has had major impacts

If the idea isn't dope in 2hrs, I would move on. It's always a tricky balance from my experience. I would release daily if possible, work on scheduling, work on managing your time well. It's all part of the game

Great job on staying consistent! I would recommend doubling down on what works. You do have a good amount of subs, but you've kind of collected an odd group of people. Like I bet you've gained some subs from your Mac Miller Faces type beat, then some from your tame impala type beat, and then some from a Steve Lacy type beat. People who like the faces beats in general are not going to like the tame impala type beat so a good chunk of your audience is not going to like every upload if that make sense and that will absolutely hurt performance

Long answer short, pick the best opportunity (if your goal is to earn more) and what you would be the most happy with long term and double down on it and get as good as you possibly can and you'll be able to build a real audience and customer base

Tbh I would follow Kxvi's advice on his channel. But here's a few things that I think are important. 1. Send every day 2. Make your loops super specific to the people you're sending too, once again niche down, the more crowded this space gets the more important niching down is. 3. Try to make a way to make your loops unique, but good. The way I think about it is to make sure it's "remarkable", if it's a 4pf, lil baby type loop with the same chords, good luck, but if you have a crazy live violin and vocal that's not too complicated but sounds crazy that'll help you stand out.

@@DillyDGIB Thank you for the advice! much preciated, i try to use violin sounds in my beats and also have som vocals, but the thing is most pulings with good sounding violin are expensive, i love using violin sounds, i mostly use one shots that are pretty unique and vocal loops aswell, ive seen some more traffic when i. started using vocal samples, but thank you!

Ok so keep in mind I don't have success in songwriting or visuals, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but the advice I would give is put out content that shows off you doing all of those things well and work on building a following by adding value to the specific type of person you want to work with. Then if you have high quality stuff on your page, people will find you organically, and you'll have more success reaching out to potential clients. Just practice your skills, stay focused on a very specific type of person you want to serve, obsess about adding specific value and over time you'll build something dope

So I think you're doing a great job with niching down. I think your beats are pretty good, but most of them didn't sound like Russ type beats imo, they were kind of, but it didn't sound like something he would hop on imo. Which is what people want when they search Russ type beat. Your handsomer beat did which is why I think it performed well. In my opinion I think you would get the best results dialing in the Russ sound. Really break down his stuff find out what drums he uses and how he comes up with ideas

Great questions! 1. The most impactful thing in the early days was one on sales ability, it’s why I could make more $ per month than subscribers I had 2. I simplified my life, my only life goal was to post a beat that day and I had to do it every day, no excuses 3. I think amateur producers really underestimate how long it takes unfortunately, everyone wants to blow up tomorrow and it just doesn’t work that way

@@DillyDGIB I've been trying to sell beats online for years and have made quite a few sales so far. Then for 3 years I gave up and concentrated on my recording studio which is now my full time job. Now that that business is booming I would like to start investing my time and money into growing a type beat channel in order to scale my business and move my work online. I've been posting daily on different channels for a year, testing different niches / different artists, etc... The problem is that every time the channels start well I start to have some beats that exceed 100/200k views but then (although I'm constant and do the same things) the numbers start to drop. I've tried switching artists (in the same lane), I've tried making higher quality beats but my numbers keep dropping. I get some sales (about $200/300 a month), but the numbers keep dropping and I can't grow. My channels are Lil Disa RNK II & Lil Disa RNK III.

To be honest that's too long of a break. I would quit getting views as well if I took even a few months off. There's no such thing as a dead channel in my opinion, someone just hasn't been posting the right type of beats long enough. I think the reality is it pretty much doesn't matter if you start a new channel or not, might as well keep with your old one, since you have a bit of momentum anyways

If you have something solid already that's making sales, ads can amplify that, but if your stuff is getting views and it's not selling then more people viewing is probably not the solution, you'll probably end up burning money for no reason.

The beats are tagged on youtube and low quality files also if someone uses it without purchasing, I can have it taken down. They have to hear your beats to buy them and youtube is the best for discoverability imo. Hopefully beatstars passes them soon though
