You are one of the best virtual educators in KZbin: I am also happy to see you are back. I learned from you a lot and I use GOLDEN acrylics and ARTISAN WN as well as LUKAS Berlin WMO: I like the ARTISAN better, more buttery. Both brands work great for me. I use water for the first washes. I only use ARTISAN's linseed oil if need to at the very end, but basically I don't find the need to add anything as I paint, just the WMO. ECO friendly too!

Thanks for posting this! Oh thing though, could you explain why you add the drops of airbrush medium?
@willkempartschool4 жыл бұрын
The airbrush medium can help when diluting acrylics in thin layers to retain a paint film integrity. You're usually ok just using water when there is an absorbent ground like a canvas, but on some canvas boards I find they are more resistant to water so the airbrush medium can help.

Thanks Sharon, you could try a matte medium, it just has a little thicker consistency so might need a touch more water. Will

Golden Glazing Liquid will not only protect the acrylic film but it also increases the working time of acrylic paints. If you want even more working time while protecting the film, Golden Open Medium (or their Open paints) gives quite a bit more working time.

Oooooo I’ve been wondering if I should try golden open acrylic or winsor Newton water mixable oils for the blending

Hi Will thank you for this demo, I really appreciate it. My issue with acrylics is that they dry too fast on my PALLETTE, and I've tried many. Do you find the water mixable oils stay wet/juicy/malleable on the pallette longer than the acrylics? Thank you for your reply.
@willkempartschool4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lolita, yes water-mixable oils will stay wet much longer, in a mass on your palette they will easily stay wet for a few days. Will

Just what I was looking for. It seems the the option with thinner gives the best results. What do you think about doing portion of the painting in water soluble oils and the rest in acrylics? There is a problem with different type of varnishing, the acrylics would have to have some kind of isolation coat? Have you ever tried that?
@willkempartschool4 жыл бұрын
You can work with acrylics under the oils but not acrylics on-top. If you underpaint with acrylics you can varnish the painting as if an oil painting
@vallenssia4 жыл бұрын
willkempartschool Thanks! This makes things less complicated 🤔😀

Great and informative video. I'm acrylic user myself. To be honest for me there is nothing like good oil paints but small apartment and small child led me into acrylics. I do like speed they provide sometimes though, and some quick and great effects you can achieve in your underpainting but sometimes its frustrating how fast they dry. You can't have it all I guess :D Never tried water based oils, but as much as i heard they still oil paints and using water with them will damage the paint film. thinners should be used and only difference between them and regular oils is that you can clean your brushes with water. I really never used them so not sure if this is true, some info would be nice. Btw lately I made bit of a step as an artist and from landscapes did few portrait exercises. My wife asked me what i want for birthday and I should get your portrait course 😀

I've been waiting for news on the water mixable course. Glad it will be available soon. Will you be reviewing the various WMO on the market and giving any kind of recommendations? Which WMO will you be using. I noticed the Duo and the Cobra on your palette for this Demo. Thanks so much. Love your instruction!

Hi Lucy, I don't have a review between brands on the course, but I use Cobra and Duo Aqua WMO throughout the lessons, mainly Cobra. Will

Glad to see you back Will. What's the purpose of mixing airbrush medium in with your gesso? Can other mediums be used, like gloss or matte medium, if you don't have airbrush medium?
@willkempartschool4 жыл бұрын
It's a mix between adhesion to canvas boards and retaining paint film integrity when diluting acrylics. Some canvas boards can resist and repel water more easily. If you're using canvas you'll be absolutely fine diluting just with water.
@rebekaryding2 жыл бұрын
Interesting! What is the water mixable oil thinner made of? I mean, can you using it for thinning the underpainting, or is it an oily medium for top layers?
@willkempartschool2 жыл бұрын
Hey Rebeka, yes, you can use the WMO thinner like an equivalent to a mineral spirit in traditional oil painting. Great for the underpainting stages.

Seems like a lot of work and cost for all the mediums. A watercolor wash would eliminate all that :-) (says the watercolorist ;-)
