Weird to see this "behind the scenes" film which I never knew existed till yesterday. Holy Grail was a seminal film for me. Not only introduced me to Python but to the existence of all non-American culture. I saw it at least 7 times when it came out in 1976? I was 12.

You can tell Gilliam is a natural born director. The other guys seem like "let's get this over with" while Gilliam's like a kid in a candy store.
@aliens4143
@aliens4143 3 жыл бұрын
That's an awful take. It's serious work, Gilliam is just a wacky guy, or was at least. He was the most animalistic of the group, in a way, cetainly in his roles, but also in his mindset. Doesn't mean it makes him in any way more "natural" or not for what they are doing, which is after all mostly written and (excellently) acted by the others and also directed by Terry Jones.

@@aliens4143 The most animalistic? Lol. I don't blame the other guys for being a bit miserable -the conditions were miserable.

I read in one of the books that they were pretty miserable conditions, cold, wet and windy. The Pythons haven't spoken much about the movie since then the book said. So no surprise when they went to Tunisia for 'Brian' they were much more cheerful and it's reflected in the corresponding documentaries. Still as we see here, they did their best to be cheerful for this documentary.

Perhaps it was an old, tedious joke even by 1974. The Marx Brothers did it 30-40 years earlier. From Michael Palin's diary: 'Saturday, May 11th: A rather grey day, with intermittent rain. At the gates of Doune Castle Philip Jenkinson is standing with the Film Night crew. I haven't been chatting with him for long before we have been imperceptibly shuffled into an interviewing position beside a car, and I find myself being filmed at about 11.00 in the morning, the dullness of my replies matching the dullness of the day! After that they move over to a well in the courtyard and interview Graham, who at least managed to get some silly lines in -HE DELIBERATELY MISHEARS PHIL JENKINSON'S RATHER FACETIOUS REMARK ABOUT AN 'INSANITY' CLAUSE BEING BUILT INTO THE CONTRACT[...]'

5:55 - 6:20 the scene that Graham Chapman describes here (which was the 2nd day of filming) is where I really started to feel bad for King Arthur, especially the whole ending scene, which Arthur didn't deserve.

All the interior shots were done at Doune Castle, and its exterior walls tripled as 'Swallow' castle, the castle of Guy de Lombard and Swamp Castle. Making it the exterior of Camelot as well would possibly be stretching it a little bit. Although, the original script included "It's only a model" - coming from Sir Gawain's mouth rather than Patsy's - when arriving at Camelot, meaning it was never supposed to be a 'real' castle.

About ten years ago he sued Python over the rights to Spamalot. His name is Mark Forstater. He indirectly brought the Pythons together in 2014 to do the live shows. When interviewed by Alan Yentob in 2013, Eric Idle referred to him as "this idiot". Apparently he thought of himself as the 7th Python.
