I love how this performance shows the east and west connecting in Central Asia! Kazakh and Mongolian people both come from Central Asian nomadic tribes. Sometimes they were united, and sometimes they fought. They're like cousins, and they sang the Central Asian-sounding parts of the song together. But their lands and people were divided. Dimash represents Europe and the West. (The Soviet Union ruled the Kazakh homeland, although the "stans" are independent now.) Tengger represents China and the East. (China still controls what used to be Mongolia.) Yet the song begins and ends with the traditional instruments of the high plateau, and their voices end on the same note.

this is weird. the Mongols like Ghengis Khan ruled pretty much eceryone, but they like to move around too much. Sounds like Dimash's friends. They look very Mongolian Chinese. Dimash is the only in between guy I know. lol

Thank you for your reaction and comments. I love this song, and the smiles on both Dimash's and Tengri's face while they sing. Their faces are lighted up with joy. There are only a couple of times you can see the drummers, although they are not the focus. They are behind, and down at floor level from the other musicians. You can see them from the top shots, and again at the wide shot at about 10:42 floor level on the right. The first time I saw this video I also wondered, so I looked for them. 😊Stay safe and healthy! They sang in Chinese (Tengri) and Kazakh (Dimash) for the first verses, then they both sang in Chinese for the last verse, which is why the Chinese audience applauded Dimash when he started the last verse. Hi been watching reactions since covid like most I assume but after watching a number of people reacting I must say Elizabeth I find yours most profound and insightful I have never left a comment on any social media let alone KZbin but I must admit you have shown me and others I am sure a new way to appreciate music in the past I have stopped to. Listen to instruments but you have shown me how much the voice as an instrument should be listened too now I find myself listing to classic songs and stopping and rewinding to listen to what the voices do and for that I thank you and in closing in the words of bob dylan “the highest form of art is to inspire what else can you do for them “. In that way you have inspired me thanks Elizabeth

Something I love about this performance is the respect that seems to exist between them. Tengri is a well-known singer in China, and had to be coerced into being part of Singer 2018 and one thing he said when he agreed to do it was that he wished to show traditional music to younger generations. One of the younger singers on Singer 2018, Hua Chenyu, did a cover of Tengri's song Heaven on another show prior to him performing it kzbin.info/www/bejne/m36qqmiLZceHi5I and he's there watching Tengri with his mouth hanging open. Tengri met Dimash when they performed on an end-of-season charity Singer episode, and you can see him in the green room as Dimash is performing Hello on that episode - watching with a huge smile on his face, clearly impressed as Dimash is adding his ethnic runs at the end of the song. I got the feeling he was very impressed with Dimash, as if appreciating the fact that he is sharing cultural singing by adding it into his music. Then to see this performance with them together adds to the narrative I've created in my head, which may or may not be accurate, but is just very special to me.

Not sure if someone else answered this, but the instrument is a morin khuur, a traditional Mongolian instrument. Or rather, the seated fellow is playing it traditionally, while the rest have sized-up versions to mimic a Western string quartet. I have seen Tengri performing with this group before, but I do not know if he was, shall we say, instrumental in forming them or just a frequent collaborator. It is my understanding that Tengri plays morin khuur as well.

I like it that you react to different styles of songs that Dimash sings in. However, there are more opera style songs you haven’t reacted to yet and you might be more interested in. One of them is Dimash in duet with a Kazakh opera singer Zarina Altynbayeva (soprano) singing “Question of honor.” And another one is his duet with another Kazakh opera singer Sundet Baigozhin (baritone) singing “Tu vas me Detruire” from “Notre dame de Paris.” I would really like to see your reaction. For the duet with Zarina, Dimash flew from China where he was participating in “Singer” to Almaty (KZ) to sing at the opening ceremony of Universiade 2017. For the second duet, Sundet invited him to sing together for a competition Sundet was participating in but this aria was not part of the competition. Dimash was about 21 at the time (2016).

Yes, one of my absolute favourite performances! Thank you! Sorry I couldn't join the livechat. I just wanted to add that Tengger was a contestant in Singer 2018 and met Dimash on the last episode when they were teamed up together, when Dimash sang Hello. They must have bonded somehow and I love this duet so much because you can really se how they enjoy the collab and how respectful of each other they are. I saw that many recommended that you react to Tengger singing Heaven from Singwr 2018 and I am all behind that proposal. Happy that you continue to react to Dimash on mondays. Those who dissaprove have so many more random reactors to watch. I love that you react to Dimash because you LIKE him. Not just to please others.
