A week In The Abyss...I've been a fan of Slayer since being introduced to them just before Seasons in the Abyss was released. A community college friend talked me into going to see them at a small club tour they did days before Seasons was released. The handwritten sign taped to the inside of the Trocadero box office read, "No Spikes, No Chains, No Implements Of Death" "Cover $17.50" "SOLD OUT" It was seven clubs, in seven cities, in seven days. The performance was pretty mind blowing. I was surprised at how soft spoken Tom Araya was on stage. At one point he asked how everybody was doing and then asked the fans in front to help out anyone who fell down in the pit. Later in the show he dedicated War Ensemble to all their fans in Operation Desert Storm and was looking forward to their safe return. I went into the show not owning a single Slayer record and walked out covered in sweat, ears ringing and a fan of Slayer for life. I saw the band three more times on that tour in progressively larger halls and almost every Philadelphia area show since, including their return to the Trocadero for the Undisputed Attitude club tour. I'm not a big fan of thrash and still mostly to Reign in Blood, South Of Heaven, Seasons and Undisputed Attitude.

True story: This is the infamous show that shut down the legendary Troc for close to 9 months. The fans got so crazy they ripped apart the sprinkler system upstairs. Also, legend has it...to be true...that many fans ran across the street to the Greyhound parking lot and tipped over a parked bus. Slayer did not play the Troc again until July 1995.

Haha, Yeessss, yes . THIS is the REAL SLAYER, youngster. For many years it was the ONLY Slayer. Back then we had no concept of any other Slayer because it was THESE 4 guys who created and originated a band named Slayer in a different century, even before the calendar year read ,"2000"! If you could imagine THAT!...YEP, it was waaay back in a strangely named year called, "1981 A.D."! Even before you were born. It was sooo long ago, that "the internet" didn't exist yet, believe it or not. Then, one day the greatest ever metal drummer, Dave Lombardo left the band & their music went south of the heavenly sounding raw brutality it once had. Sadly, it was already a changed band when the unthinkable eventually happened. You see, the driving force behind the band, Jeffrey Hanneman fell ill & could no longer BE the strongly beating heart and soul for this band. He was 1 of the 2 guitarists & the main man behind the writing of best lyrics and music to be performed & recorded by this band. The world waited in great anticipation of him regaining his health & his return to the band that so desperately still needed him in order to continue with greatness. That day would never come, as he passed away back in 2013. It devasted & broke the band that much more. Though the remaining 2 great band members made a valiant effort to continue carrying the GREAT SLAYER TORCH on forward by adding a couple of "o.k." replacement musicians in the absence of Dave & Jeff for a few years. They released 1 final album to close out the legendary Slayer discography. Shortly later, the band announced their Final World Tour in Jan 2018 & spent 2 years covering the planet with concerts for all & to personally thank & celebrate with all of the greatest fans in the world for around 40 years of music, craziness, fun, love, hate and loyalty. That ride made its final destination at the L.A. Forum in Nov. 2019. But, SLAYER wil live on... FOREVER!!!

Holy shit, I was there and NEVER thought I'd see this posted here. The Troc had a bar on the ground floor that was not in use. At one point I backed up to it to keep upright as I was never big into going into the pit. At some point a girl latched onto my jacket for the same purpose and hung onto me for a good 6 songs before being swept away. The other main memory I have is the one ass that kept jumping off the balcony onto the crowd below. After the first time they were watching for him and cleared a space for his landing. He was helped up and out of the building after that landing. That and the whole ending with the plaster coming down from the ceiling as the upper floor flooded. Craziest show I ever was at easily.

I was there too. I was on the left side of the pit less than 10 feet away from Jeff. It was the first pit I had ever been in. It was pretty savage but everyone had each other's backs and if somebody went down we all helped each other back up as quickly as we could so nobody got trampled on or tripped over. I recently watched a few short videos of bands I never heard of and what these guys were doing in the pits is what the skinheads used to do at metal shows in the 80s, just throwing punches and swinging all over the place. And it pissed us metal heads off to no end.

Wow, this just popped up in my KZbin feed. I am 50 years old and remember hearing about this show! I was barely 15 at the time and on a short parental leash. Having been a slayer fan since I was 12 when I purchased haunting the chapel at the balcony in upper Darby I was pretty jealous of anyone at school who was at this one. So cool getting to see this 30 plus years later. The audio is damn good too! Thanks!!

@@gsoltis29 "Some of the shit Dave pulled"? 3 back surgeries later? Who's fault is THAT? It wasn't Dave's stupidity to not learn to get a drum tech to help you out after the first back surgery. Even a lab rat likely would've figured that out by the second one" let alone before the third. Kinda sounds to me like you're hating on him simply because he made his self a legendary household name as ONE OF the, if not THEE highest respected drummer of a genre and generation, & you're not. Maybe rooted out of jealousy, idk.. I cant say I even know you, so I'm not knocking your own talents or accolades as a musician/skinsman. You may even be a phenomenal drummer for all I know. Regardless of whether you are a drummer or not, its still childish & immature of you to throw shade on his name & his playing.

That’s absolutely true about The Troc being shut down after this infamous show. I was at the show as well. I bought a scalped ticket outside The Troc minutes into Raining Blood. With out a doubt the best Slayer show I ever saw. Seeing them in a small venue was fucking awesome. They played all of ‘Seasons... expect: ‘Hallowed Point’ and ‘Temptation’. Slayer in their prime!

Dave was having problems with his bass pedals back then for a little while. His road manager told him to lift his seat up so people could see him more, but it stuffed up his pedal work. Even the pedals on the album version of war ensemble were dubbed because he couldn’t nail them. All due his lifting of his seat. Thankfully he realised after a while and got back to his best.

This was the second show I saw, Metallica's Damaged Justice tour at the classic Spectrum in Philadelphia being the first. This was Slayer's Week in the Abyss tour. Seasons in the Abyss wasn't even out yet. Seeing those 2 bands in their prime at 2 of Philly's best venues is something I will never forget. And to be able to watch both shows on KZbin is a blessing and brings back great memories. I started the Angel of F@#king Death chant at the end. I was screaming shit throughout the whole show.

9/10 Hammerjacks. Me and my buddy RIP went drinking beer in the car listening to slayer. Later joined by other buddies another RIP who decided to go to the block first. Next thing I know there was a bunch of cop cars driving around the block nonstop. We got in line and I made friends with a dude that went to the Philly show. I recall seeing people passed out or dead kissing the curb or laid out on the sidewalk. We get in and I get 2 beers & with GA, no way in hell was gonna get another nor piss. I was looking at vids of Hammer shows & confused where I was at as it didn't match the Slayer show as people didn't line to the stage due to a huge pit. I was the first row non-pit which was at the very edge of a step down. There were these chicks jumping off the balcony then the guys would catch them, then pass them around. All of the sudden this dude jumps up then yells Heavy Metal or Slayer, I forget now, he jumps, the crowd parts like the Red Sea in front of Moses, bam! The poor b@stard lands face first on the floor. He missed the show as he was carried out on aa stretcher. The show was great but a pain in the arse as it was a constant struggle being pushed then pushing back. I was fighting for my life as there was no way in hell I wanted to fall over that step into that pit. We were big dudes, we had lines of people crushed into us, we held up better than Super Bowl Champions. We'd lose 2 steps, anchor like tug-of-war, push back for 20 minutes, get 2 steps back. 45 second rest, repeat all night long. One cool thing was a guy fell in the pit right in front of us, I think it was the guy from Philly & I simultaneously grabbed each of his shoulders with lightning speed, then got him up before anybody stepped on him. The opening band was called Skeleton and they didn't go over well. People were spitting & throwing drinks on them. We wanted them to get the F off the stage. Highlights of new songs Expendable, Dead, Seasons,, & Spirts. Jeff was chubby so drinking Coors Light instead of Bud. I was a Tom fanboy so stood in front of him. He was the king of headbanging/thrashing/screaming at the time. Wish I would have gotten a tour shirt but didn't see where they were sold. Slayer F off too much so missed Angel assuming they even played it? My friends had enough so told me it was time to go. I was on vacation but they all had work in the morning, with like an hour half drive to their pad. We were all from central PA, they all worked down there. It was really loud so my ears rung for 2 or 3 days. Eagles beat Giants on MNF, Punch- Out was released on NES without Mike Tyson, and at the mall I bought an album from an unknown band that week called Pantera: Cowboys From Hell.

Contrary to what the lunatic Norbert Freidrich says below-this is the most uncompromising band on the planet. One of the few thrash bands that dared to come to Belfast during troubled times. Hail to the Kings!

I love...LOVE SLAYER.....truth is Kerry started playing 7 string Nu Metal shit and the ONLY thrash band to get heavier every album was TESTAMENT. The mid to 2000 Testament put out LOW, Demonic (where they went almost death metal) and The Gathering. Slayer released a punk album and the album (forget the title) with the white dude on the album ..first three songs were awesome and then they almost went nu metal...ughh check out Srrum. So while I love Slayer (Kerry is an asshole) but Testament was the band that uncompromised...,,not Slayer.

playing seven strings doesnt mean your playing nu-metal. ALOT of nu-metal was in 6 strings too. Stupid analogy. You forgot the last couple of tracks especially POINT were pretty thrash. Most of the 7 string shit was on god hates us all none of it was diabolus in musica which was considered influenced by nu-metal and 95% written by jeff hanneman if you looked at the credits. You can blame him as well.

I was at this show, it was billed as "A Week in the Abyss" - small theater tour to test/premier new tracks. Awesome show, until the end when the audience was so fired up they tore the place up, then proceeded into the streets and attempted to tip a Septa bus.

This was the first night of rehearsal shows (As mentioned "A Week In The Abyss") before the Seasons Tour eventually started. Slayer had a big history with Philly back then. At 44:29, Tom mentions Freddy Kruger. I was the one in the mask. I had been to 7 or 8 Slayer shows (at that point) and always wore it during Die By The Sword. And yep, the Troc was destroyed. The entire sprinkler system was ripped out of the ceiling on the first floor, under the balcony *near the bar) and it just got worse after that. There's also another video of this show somewhere, I handed the camera to my buddy so I could put the Freddy mask on & head up to the stage.

Thats the first time i hear Dave Lombardo making some mistakes... South of Heaven he leaves out a short tom part, Seasons he plays a simplified, different roll, shortly after he messed up a roll and a few other things (as the band did as a whole on this song). Never heard something like that from Dave before.
