Dimmu have played with orchestras and choirs on many occasions. The darker metal genre goes very well with orchestras and operatic styles of singing.

Ingo mentioned "Gateways" live. I agree! But recommend checking out the Oslo version from the same series! Full orchestra etc! Greatvisuals and sound! 2 edits: Not death metal, but black metal... ...and that tromboneplayer gets me everytime! Him early 2000s.. "Mom and dad.. can i please start playing metal guitar!" Parents: "no you have to follow in our steps and play symphonic music!" Him: "OK... but can i play the trombone?"

Yeah, KORK (the orchestra of the Norwegian national broadcaster) cooperated with two metal bands (and some non-metal bands) some years back, Dimmu Borgir and later Satyricon. I attended the Dimmu Borgir concert - amazeballs. "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse", the stuff from "In Sorte Diaboli", ... lovely stuff.

Dimmu Borgir \m/ kings of third wave black metal (as opposed to even more "death metal"-sounding second wave black metal). Third wave is to black metal what melodic is to death metal (think Amon Amarth versus Cannibal Corpse), if we're doing higher-level genre comparisons. Regardless of all of that, so great to see reactions to this type of music - very enjoyable, both for the music itself and for "sharing" the experience with someone! They've made orchestra-compatible compositions since the late 90s, but the really big ones will be Progenies of the Great Apocalypse, Serpentine Offering, and Gateways. Honorable mentions are of course Mourning Palace, but also songs like In Death's Embrace and Sacreligious Scorn. For those who doubt Dimmu's capacity in the second wave (which is often regarded as the "true" black metal), check out Devil's Path.

Quite many black metalists have migrated toward orchestral soundscapes. For example Jari Mäenpää behind Wintersun has black metal roots, too.

Dimmu isn't 3rd wave.
@zyrphath Жыл бұрын
@@heathenhammer2344 you can call it whatever you want, but third wave is a popular term for it. If you wanna be technical about it, let's call it the "post-2nd wave direction that is to some degree or another towards more melodic content" - which became a hallmark of that era. But I'll call it 3rd wave for short, and there's not really anything you can say to convince me otherwise.

Dimmu was one of the first Norwegian Black Metal bands. They always took crap about being a Symphonic Black Metal band, but I think it suits their music really well. I don't usually like Black Metal, but their arrangements and the Symphonic accompaniment makes their style tolerable. Even if they break into blast beats, which I ordinarily hate, they'll change up the rhythm in short order.
@digitalmouse33142 жыл бұрын
Black Metal Violin player headbanging as well from a music perspective better than cradle since Cradles original composer he was good and they are a symphonic band as well. Lryics is not fantastic vocalizing gets the job done sort of thing yeah Cradles' first 3 albums are unbeatable.
