@@diamondis4ever Dinah Washing was good, really good. But I entreat you to entertain MS. Hoilday again. See her documenrty, listen to songs etc, then make your decision. Im not here to argue either. But his Holiday has a flavor, and a soulfulness that Melancholy, depressed, (add expletive) that hit deep in your soul. She is an artist, a genius at bringing you into world. Without a doubt DB, no other artist can mimick a BILLIE HOLIDAY song. In fact the song we are commenting on "lover come back home to me" was orignally song by who else. Billie Holiday RANGE and sound was never matched by others. Dinah Wasington, Nina Simon, Sarah Vahn, Anita O'Day, even Deion Warwick, all had the sultry female voices. All sang GOOD songs. But Billie was a master poet like Edgar Allen POE. Please before you respond, Listen to these memorable: Melancholly hits that has stood the test of time. STRANGE FRUIT, I COVER THE WATERFRONT, My MAN, I CRIED FOR YOU, SOME OTHER SPRING, SOLITUDE, GLOOMY SUNDAY, GOD BLESS THE CHILD, THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU and finally again STRAGE FRUIT AGAIN but this time, READ what the song is all about. Why BILLIE wrote it. Her courage to write it and sing it in front of a white audience at the time she lived in. HOLLA at me.

Dinah Washing had the best diction of just about any singer. You always knew what she was singing about. She died just a few years after this performance. In 1963, Aretha Franklin did a great tribute album of her work while at Columbia Records.

Unfortunate about the blonde wig. Dinah was marvelous...I do think her voice suffered with her dramatic weight loss in the late 50s...it lost its luster and she lost some range, but her phrasing and elocution remained pristine.

Blonde wigs were not blk women trying to be white blonde was just as fine as black it was Hollywood glam to women still is for decades it just stands out shows confidence which she embodies

Wig look ridiculous on her - and yes it was an attempt to look white and be accepted, dont kid yourself "Tish". Same as men wearing "conks" back in these days. Sam cooke was one of the first black stars to embrace natural.

As the saying goes, "Blondes have more fun". I guess she wanted to be a blonde at that time. This later became a trend for a lot of Black women in the 80s and 90s.
