Wonderful, thank you! Layne typically arranges the Halloween songs for VoicePlay (Geoff does Christmas). This year Layne did two - this one, and a mind-blowing version of To the Hall of the Mountain King, reimagined as an a cappella Halloween story (no words, but really hilarious story). My favorite by far was Mountain King - hoping you have time to take a look (even if you're "late" for Halloween!)

I've seen Hoist the Colours 50 times and I still have the same reaction at the end that you just had. Geoff's skills as an arranger are just getting better and better. Someone else mentioned it also but their performance of Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King is spectacular and hilarious.

Geoff: I love a man who can whistle, I think that was my favorite part of this piece. This isn't my favorite of his, that God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen which you reacted to last year. Voiceplay: Hoist the Colours is my very favorite of theirs. The harmonies are so amazing, especially the "sepulchral tone" when they seem to go into a major chording. You had your eyes closed when Geoff made an amazing slide UP, that part was surprising, because most listeners expected him to go down again. Eli was a rocking beast and the star of the show in this one. He was originally supposed to sing the part that Jose had, but the featured artist who was going to sing the other part could not get there because of Covid restrictions. Jose agreed to come in, but his voice would not have had the same grit, so he agreed to take the (somewhat) lesser role. Usually the featured artist has a bigger piece of the pie. This was Geoff's arrangement. Hide and Seek - Ding Dong They ran into a featured artist issue again with this one, the one who was planned had a conflict. They recorded the piece, but it can't be used at this time. Layne did this arrangement and pulled it all together. He even flew to Lauren to record her portion and went back, just before the Hurricane hit Florida where Voiceplay is based. You said this one was creepy and funny, that is exactly it. Voiceplay does amazing work and they are not afraid to think outside the box, Really enjoyed your reactions, it was such a treat to get all three covers in one reaction! Subscribed in anticipation of more Geoff and Voiceplay!!

This was fantastic! If you enjoyed Voice Play's cover of 'Hide and Seek' with Lauren Paley then I'd recomend checking out the accapella cover from The Bass Gang with her as well. Equally wonderful but also a great contrast even in terms of how Lauren approaches the song.

The Bass Gang didn't stay true to the original story line. They showed 4 boys & it was only supposed to be one little boy. Also they showed Lauren as being in the house already when she said knock knock open up the door now.

Geoff did it himself, and he don't do no bad work that I've ever heard. And I agree with you about the visuals; putting de-saturated clones of himself in vaguely 1800s-ish trailhand dress to be the ghosts is an excellent conceit. (And the blue/white eyes are suitably creepy.) 06:05 In American music that technique is known as "call-and-response." 08:52 "EEE-lye." It's a shortening of the Biblical name "Eliezer" (el-eee-AYY-zer). 09:30 I LOVE LOVE how the makeup people put a "blind eye" contact lens into Cesar's right eye, to match with the sword-cut scar. That's attention to detail, that is. 09:53 Now that lyric's something you might not recognize unless you're VERY VERY conversant with British/Irish folk music. "Fiddler's Green" is a metaphor for the Summerlands, the afterlife, for sailors. 11:40 Again, props to the makeup department for giving EVERYONE scars appropriate to multiple close-quarters sword-fights. The group look as though they've literally been in the wars, and exposed to far too many days of sun and wind. 12:30 Indeed it's not a polka. Although they keep singing "heave ho" which would signal a halyard shanty, the plodding tempo calls back to capstan shanties, meant to be sung as the crew are winding up the anchor from the bottom prior to setting sail. For that sort, you want a slow-and-steady beat as everyone leans and pushes the capstan bars as they raise the anchor and chain. The discussion of halyard versus capstan versus pump shanties is a fascinating one. I once had the opportunity to listen to a woman, a Commodore in the Texas Navy, give a talk about the differences, with examples for which she accompanied herself on the banjo and encouraged sing-alongs.

Wow! Excellent comment! You covered almost all my thoughts. I’m just going to add a bit. You mentioned the Fiddler’s Green. I looked it up because that’s what I like to do and I’m in the US so i wasn’t not familiar with that term . Did you notice that it’s the only time the light was not blue or red? It flashes green for just a moment on that line. In addition to the rest of the amazing make up that they had done, each of the members has a temporary brand. Pirates of the era reportedly were branded with a P on their hands/ forearms. They each had VP added. I wouldn’t have noticed except I saw it in the “behind the scenes”. I believe you can see it on Eli and Geoff just a little bit.

Hoist the Colours is one of my all time favorites. I have watched this probably 100 times, and still learned something new. I liked your explanation of the “oh” sound and the placement of their mouths. Eli toured with rock bands prior to joining VP and there are a few clips of him rocking out more recently (well, within the last few years). Ding Dong: The set for Hide and Seek is a a room at the Mansion in Disney and they are all characters from the ride. Lauren is called the Stairwell Siren because she likes to sing this in her stairwell and scare her neighbors. She did a phenomenal job. Her original version is slow and breathy like the beginning. The echo makes it really creepy. Some little details: - Lauren: her demented eyes turn red just before the banshee. She is semitransparent- you can see embers through her -Layne’s crazy makeup! A LOT of people had he and Geoff mixed up. Lots of black food color in some sort of gel for his teeth. When he laughs, the inside of his mouth is black. -Grim Grinning Ghost busts appear in the bookshelf behind Geoff -Eli is unstable Alexander NITROkoff on a keg of TNT/nitroglycerin (BOOM!) (“stretching” portrait behind him) -Cesar is the medium Madam Leota at the seance table. Was he singing in his head voice?😂 -Elizabeth Zharoff (Charismatic Voice) provided background eerie tones.

Geoff usually doesn't do much fry but his specialty are subharmonics. His low note is B0, with growl it is Ab0 - A0, full chest is F#1, tenor is A5. Eli is pronounced like jelly. I enjoyed your reaction and analysis. The set here duplicates Disney's Haunted Mansion ride.

Great work Anna/Wednesday! I liked Hide and Seek the best. For other artists, how about Eivør? Saw her in Boulder this Fall. She was a delight to talk to before the show. I REALLY enjoy your reactions! I like the way you react both emotionally and analytically to the music. Many reactors are one dimensional. @@annavaskelainen I sing barbershop, and we generally use Call and Response, and A cappella is a very close kin to barbershop. Both forms have their roots in African American culture, which would follow on from the traditional African music that you referenced.

I hate music where everything revolves around a gimmick or quirk of the singer. "Oooo, I have a really deep voice!" It sounds so stupid to sing a song and continually go to that quirk.
