Layne's acting skill and ability to gauge the energy he brings to a performance always astonishes me. This one would be over the top for most people, but here it's simply consistent with the character he created. Compare that with his almost frozen body language in "I Can't Make You Love Me" when he was incredibly understated and used that to increase the heart-breaking intensity of his performance and you see the range and control the man has. Mind-blowing.

Each of the singers represents a character from the Haunted Mansion. Eli is a character from the stretching room portraits- Alexander Nitrokoff standing on dynamite, Geoff is the caretaker-Silas Crump, Cesar is Madam Leota, Layne is the Hatbox Ghost, and Lauren is Constance Hatchaway the Ghost Bride.

You need to be featured in a Voiceplay song! The second note in Eli’s first solo-is that a C#2? His growl/yell at the end of that is a BOOM with an evil laugh (cuz he’s standing on dynamite). I’ve wondered if they deliberately tried to make Geoff look a little bit like Layne. EVERYBODY takes a minute to figure out who’s who. I LOVE that you caught Cesar’s riff/trill. So nice! Layne is seriously leaning into his genius-arrangements, crazy sounds, beatboxing, character voices! Amazing. And that there was a C#1 in the outro, layered with Geoff’s Thurl Ravenscroft laugh. 👀 Great reaction! Seriously, maybe you and Elizabeth can get with these guys and do something fun!! The original song (and it's original English version) is extremely creepy and dark. It's about a malevolent spirit that has possessed a little girl and is forcing her next victim, a little boy, to play a sadistic game of hide and seek. The spirit kills the girl and possesses the boy at the end, going off to find the next victim.

The twang may be an artifact from her living in Nashville. She had done a TikTok video of this that went viral. VoicePlay heard it and contacted her about doing this. She said yes and Layne flew up to record her (she is known as the Stairwell Siren from singing in the apartment stairwell) and then flew back to Orlando just in front of Hurricane Ian. The staging is very much like the Disney Haunted Mansion. You know how animated Cesar is and had to keep his head still to keep it in the crystal ball! Elizabeth of The Charismatic Voice did the background vocals of the zippy little ghosts in the room at the end.

Lauren Paley has a version of this in the stairwell defiantly worth the listen as well. if you have not heard her stuff done in the stairwell you are missing out.. it adds a naturally creepy effect Lauren Paley has a version of this in the stairwell defiantly worth the listen ( and her Tick Toc version) "Hide and Seek" is a song produced by Ho-ong-i, and performed by VOCALOID SeeU. (in Korean) the English version was done in 2014. this is based on a japanese horor story of summoning a demon to posess a body to play hide and seek .. if they find you they get your body It is sung from the perspective of a girl possessed by a malevolent entity who is playing a deadly game of hide-and-seek with a young boy victim. the Voiceplay team is set in the haunted mansion ride characters.. behind geoff is the busts for the ghosts. So they set it into the haunted mansion. I still recommend listing to the full version of Lauren Paley in the stairwell (she is nicknamed the Stairwell Siren) . She has found the perfect stairwell for an outstanding natural echo effect oh the voice-over effect you mentioned near the end was Elizabeth Zharoff from (The Charismatic Voice)

Adding to your comment, the Japanese story is the tale of playing hitori kakurenbo ( 一人かくれんぼ ) solo/one person hide and seek I guess you'd translate it as, if you want the stories the song drew from, searching the English letters is a good start.

Lauren is called the stairwell siren because she likes to go out into the stairwell and sing this and scare the crap out of her neighbors! Her full version is slow like the beginning- very creepy. This is the same set that is used in Geoff’s Monster Mash from last year and the PattyCake Productions piece Villains at the Haunted Mansion. The characters are from the ride. Lot of tiny details: -Lauren: her demented eyes turn red just before the banshee. She is semitransparent- you can see embers through her -Layne’s crazy makeup! A LOT if people had here and Geoff mixed up. lots of black food color in some sort of gel for his teeth. When he laughs, the inside of his mouth is black. Rick Underwood usually does their makeup on these. He is a genius. Layne did NOT like the airbrushing (tickles😂) -Grim Grinning Ghost busts appear in the bookshelf behind Geoff (who had to crouch the whole time) -Eli is unstable Alexander NITROkoff on a keg of TNT/nitroglycerin (BOOM!) (“stretching” portrait behind him) -Cesar is the medium Madam Leota at the seance table. Was he singing in his head voice?😂 -Elizabeth Zharoff (Charismatic Voice) provided background eerie tones. Correction: M Mash was not filmed there

I always get such a kick out of watching you try to sing Geoff's part. Mostly because I do the exact same thing! On that note (heh), funny story: I recently realized that I inadvertently taught myself how to do subharmonics when I was a pretty young kid, like 9 or 10 I think, and it had nothing to do with singing. I was just playing in the pool trying to imitate dolphin clicks! (Yeah... I was that kid). I'd honestly forgotten about it until a couple weeks ago, I was watching one of Geoff's videos where he demonstrates a sub without any post production on it and I was like 😳 WAIT A MINUTE. Moral of the story: if you want to learn subs the fun way, stick your head underwater and pretend to be a dolphin. 🤣

The parallel of the soprano and bass lines at the start is super creepy sounding. Gives me chills. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYLNl6Wkhbd6r8U One of the reasons it's hard to tell Geoff and Layne apart until they start singing (unless you've seen the BTS) is that Layne was so committed to his vision of his character, he's clean-shaven for the first time in years. Even has black food dye in his mouth. The ring that Geoff always wears on his right middle finger is a giveaway if you're ever not sure who is who.

The Makeup is spectacular - Kudos to Rick. I just heard another great one by Peter Hollens - This is Halloween. I think you will really like it too.

If you ever want to record a re-watch of this video and talk about more details, I think a number of folks would appreciate another 15 or 20 minutes of analysis. There are so many things going on that pointing out a few more of them would be fun and educational.

If you've never been to a Disney park, you may not recognize that bit under the credits as the ending of the Haunted Mansion ride. As you are exiting, that is the music they play with a ghost reading the words Lauren is delivering. They skipped the second half of that line, "Don't forget your ... DEATH certificate." And all of the characters they are playing appear at various places in the ride. Those that are familiar with the ride can appreciate the make up and costumes all the more - they are spot on to the characters in the ride.

I truly think that they have a predetermined beat and note count and someone just throws in a time limit and minimum surprise count to fit it all in ... The shorter it is, the crazier it gets...

always the in-character performance from these fine people. I wonder if they had performed, or would, on Broadway.

I get what you meant talking about Singin in the Rain. My favorite song was always Make 'Em Laugh. Maybe one day you could do an analysis on that scene and song

The whole thing is an homage to the Disney Haunted Mansion. Geoff is portraying the Caretaker. Eli is Alexander Nitrokoff, one of the portraits in the Stretching Room (you can see his portrait behind him of his character standing on a keg of dynamite). Cesar is fortune teller, Madame Leota, who appears in the Mansion as a ghostly head in a floating crystal ball. Lauren is Constance Hatchaway, the attic bride (she was filmed separately and did her own makeup). Her "hurry back" at the end is part of what a tiny ghostly bride (often called "Little Leota) says as you exit the ride. And Layne is the Hatbox Ghost, whose head disappears from his neck and reappears in the hatbox he's carrying. The bookshelves are a nod to the Mansion's library of ghost stories, all four stretching portraits can be seen to the right, and the portrait in the middle of the scene is Master Gracey, the aging portrait from the Mansion's foyer. Also, Elizabeth Zharoff (aka The Charismatic Voice) provided some extra spooky background voices.
