DK, you should pad the short draw vids with an appended 10 minute bass solo inspired by the game so we can avoid these timing tells.

I think making matches more exciting by adding in these rapid/blitz factors deter and bring dullness to the match as Ding is taking no risk so he can win at blitz.

This reminds me of the countless games in which Stockfish lost against Alpha0: a recurring pattern was a bishop on c8 trapped behind pawns on e6 and b7. To keep that construction, Alpha0 even sacrificed quite some material. I think these positions are just miserable for black if white is knowing what they are doing. Even if you do survive, you almost never win.

13:26 Yes. Ding won't mind going to the rapids. That's how he defeated Nepo. Besides he's also got a 120 point ratings advantage over Gukesh in that format. Gukesh has 2 whites to do something.
@davidcopson5800Ай бұрын
If he goes to rapids, let's hope it's grand rapids.
@HunterBelkiranАй бұрын
He's definitely better at rapid than Gukesh, but I suspect Gukesh's probably practiced his rapid gameplay in the event of this kind of scenario. He's also likely underrated there too, as he's so young. I could be wrong, but it won't be a blowout if it goes to rapid, imo.

I think they should just get rid of tiebreaks. It's supposed to be a classical match after all. Give the incumbent draw odds.

That only gives an incentive for the world champion to make draws, so it won't improve things.

To create more urgency, I propose a change of format. Do some form of tiebreak after every draw to try to get a decisive result for each round. Tennis tiebreaks are the most exciting thing in the sport whether it's deuce or tied set. Of course, having the white pieces isn't nearly the advantage of a service game.
@robinesperozaАй бұрын
I agree. Like Norway chess or something.
@seop1721Ай бұрын
Ooh. I love this idea!
@seop1721Ай бұрын
Maybe switch colours. If black draws, they are white in the tiebreak. So it rewards the defender.

If Gukesh sees a loss coming in the rapid play, he may need to choose a risky opening and press before it's too late.
@perpetualchesspodcast9143Ай бұрын
I think it’s dangerous for Ding to punt his White’s and rely on Gukesh’s relative rapid weakness as a wholesale match strategy. The kid is 18! Kids get better at chess (including rapid).
@robinesperozaАй бұрын
yes, but during the match it seems that Gukesh relied more on calculation and Ding more on intuition. I feel rapid play-offs are Ding's best shot.

Ding's rapid rating dates essentially from the times he was in a peak form. Since 4 years he loses rating points. So I would not say he is strong in rapid. He was strong in rapid, but is he still?

@northshores7319Ай бұрын
Most everyone thought Gukesh would be a t+3 by now. Ding is saying-To beat me ya gotta attack-hopping Gukesh will stumble, for, after all, he is the Challenger. Before Ding exchanger on f6, I think past Champs like Capa, Petrosian and Fischer would have been more positionally direct in their play. Ding's match experience is an advantage. Kasparov will be the first to tell us that can be a huge problem for the challenger.
@msalty2823Ай бұрын
Uneventful game. Why would white be so modestly? I don't like that players can play for draws and then hope for the rapid or blitz. imo game should be played with some sort of sudden death classical format.
@fundhund62Ай бұрын
I think they should simply give the champion draw odds, again. There is nothing wrong with expecting the challenger to beat the title holder if he wants to be called world chess champion. If you don't like that, how about first to win three or so games?
@shouldersofgiants4649Ай бұрын
Hey Ben 👋I get the feeling that Ding doesn't believe he can win the match in the classical portion. Seems to me, his strategy is to minimize risk and conserve energy for the tiebreak. This also puts Gukesh under psychological pressure who (in some instances like not taking draw in G7 & 8) looked a bit too eager (although he has shown restraint overall). Games 11 & 13 should be very interesting! I'm hoping for a close finish and Gukesh taking the match in the classical portion

Leko, Karjakin, Carauna, Gukesh...recent challengers about to lose a WC match on tiebreakers? Even Magnus shied away from the challenge. We really need a format change, badly. If they want to play rapid tiebreakers, let's do it from the start and not waste anyone's time. I'd love to see a fighting classical match, but the players don't have the nerves or the motivation to do it. Ding has laid out his plan. Gukesh has TWO games as white to win, or he becomes a clear underdog in a match where he was seen as a clear favorite. Shame.
