This brings back some really old childhood memories - back in the day, nose drops used to come with a tiny glass pipette separate from the bottle/lid. The materials to make a Cartesian Diver made it sound so exiting and interesting, but to my surprise no ground cinnamon, sugar cubes, paper clips, tooth picks, tapes, or a pencil that has been left over night in a dish of salt were not used in the making of this. My curiosity has not been satisfied.

This guy has such a quirky sense of humour...he's pretty awesome. His videos used to annoy me and I'd switch to another channel - but the more you watch, the more he grows on you! As a high school physics teacher, I also like the casual way he introduces physics concepts in a natural way, without people even realising they're being prepared for a more formal education in physics later on. The size of the buoyant force, pressure, forces having directions, gases being compressible and liquids not,...there's a lot to "unpack" here ; ) Another good one is his video on the rolling-back cylinder toy (elastic potential energy, mass having momentum and resisting change in motion, ...good stuff).

I think using a pipette is the best option. You slip a hex nut (M5x0.8mm (stainless steel)) onto the end, cut the excess tail off, and then you can easily adjust the amount of water in the pipette. And since the pipette is clear, you can actually watch the air bubble inside the pipette shrink and expand as the pipette dives and surfaces.

Ok, I paused the video and got all of the stuff, now I am ready to watch the rest of the video. It took me some time to find some of the things I had around the house and my car broke down a few days ago so I had to walk to the store to get a few things. It wasn't snowing that bad but it was pretty cold but now thankfully I have everything I need!

Michael, I have a question about this experiment. Twice, I have followed your instructions and have had exciting results! One observation of each attempt has been that after a few days, the "diver" has become less excited and ended up hanging out at the bottom of the pool. While I can identify, I thought you should be alerted of these findings. Upon releasing pressure, our friend returns to the top of his/her experience. Please use your science magic and help us all understand everything as you see it. You are wonderful! Love your videos :-)

I am not biting at the other ingredients. But i have done a physics degree and this stuff is why i love physics. 1) It tells us how the everyday mundane works (lifting up a brick, a train crossing a bridge). 2) It also tells us how the extraordinary works (supernovae, atomic interactions or how a ketchup packet can both float and sink).
