I had just came on duty. I was making my first trip down main street in my police car. I stopped at a red light in front of a local drug store. I had to look twice when Red Skelton came out of the store and walked right up to the police car and said "well, hello father..." Then he said "OH MY, my mistake, the black uniform fooled me, I better not give you my confession". He said he was doing a show at the local Executive Inn but he never buys things like shavers or cigars at the hotels because they charge too much. He said he always goes to local stores to buy stuff. I ask why he did not have any escorts or body guards. He just smiled and said "who would ever hurt Freddie the Freeloader" I ask if he would sign my notebook. As he did he said "well, mom always said one day I would end up in a police notebook." I feel forever blessed to have spent few moments with the greatest comedian ever.

I'm 71 years old and Tuesday nights with Red Skeleton was our 'family time' when I was growing up. We seldom, if ever missed one of his shows and I had the privilege of taking my Dad to one of his parades in Vincennes, Indiana where I waved at Mrs. Skeleton and she waved back smiling at ME. Dad and I went to the Red Skeleton Museum on the Vincennes Campus as it was being completed and I'll take those wonderful memories to my grave. Rest in Peace my friend.

Red Skelton has been & always will be one of the most wonderful people i remember from my childhood, watching his show every week with my parents. I always get emotional with tears welling up in my eyes just seeing him, remembering! To hear his voice now & the sweetness in his voice, his sincerity is the most wonderful thing to hear. I remember watching this when it first aired in 1992. I had it taped on VHS and watched it many times since but haven’t been able to find it for some time now. If you knew and loved Red this is a must watch and if your never heard of Red this is a must watch. Red Skelton was one of the last of a pioneering generation of entertainers that was gifted with talent and grace beyond our understanding. He had a Davinci class of abilities and used them to them to the fullest while becoming beloved by all. There is a second episode where Red just walked on the Dini Petty set while taping a show. The love, joy and tears explode from everyone as it unfolded and it was also magical. If that tape exists please post it as well.

Use to watch your show at my grandmothers house. She took my brother and I out of the Franco American Orphanage in Lowell, Mass. Kept us for about 3 or 4 years. Rachel Perry was her name. She was so wonderful to us. I was so young. I never thanked her. Seems now a day never goes by that I don’t say “Thank you Meriere” Another regret I have is one day I gave her fur coat to a donation drive. I still remember the guy throwing it in the truck.!! Only have a picture of her with it on. Will always wish I had kept it. I love ❤️ you Meriere.

@mysticmaverick 1 🌿💕 I think Red was so full of love that he drew strength from people around him. Remember how he said he looked at the audience and saw them as family? He must have felt that God put him in touch with dear Ed Wynn at just the right time. My late husband and I saw him from the nosebleed seats at the Fox Theatre in Detroit years ago. Then we got closer a yr or so later when he returned. If his show was "ad-lib" that's amazing, because he told over an hr and a half of the very same jokes❣️😜And we all laughed our heads off again! He was coming back again a yr or so later but hurt his knee and postponed. We renewed our tickets through another rescheduling, but he passed away before he could return. That just shows what a trooper he was and never one to quit. Such a special person.

How do you know he was kind, because of his smile? Are you a family member of his? If not, that's pretty arrogant and silly statement. If you're an adult you should know that all we common people know about celebrities etc. is their public image, nothing else, unless you are a family member. I am not saying that he wasn't a kind man, but mixing a public image created by his work, his agents, managers etc. with reality, is little silly. I would only appreciate his work, because I didn't knew him personally. If you did, good for you.

Such a wonderful interview! Red is the type of man you'd just love to spend an entire day with...such a delight and a truly humble and compassionate human being. Knowing all of the difficulties he's had to experience in his personal life, and that in spite of them he carried on and fulfilled his desire to bring laughter to the whole world, it speaks volumes about who he was. I consider it an honor to have been alive at the same time as Red, and that I was able to experience him first-hand and not just as some flickering image in an old video, even though that would still be enough for me. May he never be forgotten, and may future generations continue to be entertained and inspired by Red. He is a blessing to all generations...

He was so popular during my life, I was on board an Aircraft Carrier in the mid 60’s and every evening they showed 2 episodes of Red’s TV show. What a funny Dude! DJ

I've seen bread in action. Live on TV when it was black and white. Always enjoyed the show. Running forward a few years I got married and had a son. I bought him a video cartridge the best of Red Skelton. It made him laugh, I told him do you know his Red Skelton doesn't use dirty words in his skits. That's why I picked him somebody that can be funny without saying vulgar words. This is just my opinion I think Red Skelton has a special place in heaven. But I'm not the boss. Thank you for reading this. Take care and God bless.

This is the first I've ever heard of Dini Petty. She did a great job of letting Red Skelton roll, without burying him in questions, which is what Oprah or Phil Donahue would likely have done.

Wonderful memories.... We never missed one of his shows and when I got married, the tradition continued. Years later, when one of my sons took me to the Okeefe to see him the last time he was here, was an incredible experience...equally sad to see him at the stage exit, looking frail in a wheel chair instead of the giant stage presence he was. Loved his sweetness.... God bless...

Thank you for posting this. When I was a little guy, my favorite TV show was "The Red Skelton Show" on Tuesday night. I had no idea he had done any interviews, much less one in which he related so extensively of his personal experiences. This video should be made an international treasure. This is the best interview that I have ever watched. It is entertaining, funny and genuine. I've watched only two of his shows and I was really impressed. Dini, I echo Red's words when he said you are a nice lady. After watching your interview of Red I totally agree. Red Skelton is a legend.

Loved watching him when I was young. I love sharing jokes with people. Got started early with that. Used to tell racist jokes + got laughs, but realized that only encouraged racism. I told a joke regarding the Irish (I'm part Irish as well as Scottish, + 2 tribes of Indians(or Indigenous) tribes (some years later my brother told me grandma was prone to embellish things now + then...but telling that joke + seeing the guy's face when he laughed, it was a kind of scoffing laugh, with the look in his eyes + his nose crinkled up like when your smell something REALLY foul...THAT really made me realize...a lot of jokes usually make someone the BUTT of it. I tried stopping the telling of such jokes...1 of the very hardest, if not THE hardest things to do. I'm not trying 2 b 'Holyer Than Thou, + we all probably need 2 laugh @ ourselves, or in the VERY least, see the humor in something + maybe lighten up a bit, sometimes, remembering there is a passage in the bible: being slow to anger + quick to listen(I know better than 2 even THINK I'm perfect. Being older can be of sometimes, but even so, there are time we need catch ourselves...enough...I get a real kick out of 'Red', or Mr. Skelton. I hope to hear from him, or read from his writing. Yes, there is Plato, Socrates, Confucious(

I'm so thankful I can still watch Red Skeleton so many years later. I so enjoyed his performance's on TV when I was a child. I couldn't get enough of him,Lucy,Disney,& Carol Brunette. It was a simpler, kinder,& safer time then. I'll always remember why he says MAY God Bless you, instead of God Bless you, cause he believes,(I too) it's not right for us, to assume we have the power in us,to tell God who to Bless. We must always ask our God,not make demands of him.
