Dinkum Beginner's Guide | 5 Helpful Tips and Tricks

When you first get your base camp tent...do NOT set it up immediately!! Time is frozen at 10:00am until you set the tent, so take as much time as you want to gather whatever resources you can with no tools (dropped logs, shells for selling, flowers for selling, fruit). If you do this, you will start the game off with a nice little bank roll.

Not to mention, you can collect all the fruit available on day one to plant fruit trees at your base immediately (especially when it comes to tracking down bananas and coconuts) ^^ - and if you spend that time going through the cactus areas... you'll have plenty of cactus fruit to keep that stamina up for awhile!

Actually you can set up the tent, just don't talk to Fletch afterwards yet. Once youve talked to Fletch after setting up tent, the time starts running!

My advice differs a bit from the video, here's my take: 1. Depending on meat for stamina is a lot slower than depending on fruit for stamina. If stamina is your concern, just pick fruit, hunting isn't the most efficient way at all LOL cactus fruit are very plentiful and restore plenty of stamina - there is only one good reason to level hunting in the early game and that is to do requests from the bulletin board to hunt alpha animals! 2. The first day is frozen in time before you place the tents so you can use that time to do several things, including gathering fruit (costs no stamina to harvest btw and you can plant fruit to grow their respective trees at your base,) picking up dropped logs, picking up flowers (some of which are rare so it's good to find out where they are,) picking up shells (this is probably the best time to get early shell collecting achievements,) scouting the map for a desirable base spot AND looking for where the 4 towers are located so you can mark them on your map for when you are ready to repair them. IF you use the first day to harvest all the cactus fruit, you'll have hundreds to start with. I also made around 100k dinks just from doing this (I didn't sell everything, just some of it,) so it's an early start in many ways. 3. The Bulletin Board is not pointed out to you, and building the shop first means you are locked out from it until you pay your initial debt. So build the Bulletin Board first - it's much cheaper! The Bulletin Board gets you access to extra requests that can give better rewards than what the villagers ask you to do in person. It also gives additional villager affinity points. 4. You don't need to put your base in the middle of the map to access all the biomes quickly! In the early game it is easy to gain this impression, but later on you unlock fast travel to each of the 4 sides of the map using the towers, and even later than that you get a 5th teleport panel that you can place at a spot of your choice. So make a base where you want, but for an early advantage, make your base near to a tower. :) Focus on finding and repairing the towers (they use items you get through metal detecting/excavating) to make getting around easier. 5. Use the midnight late time! Yes, it reduces your stamina bar to a smidge, but a SINGLE cooked cactus fruit will restore nearly the entire stamina gauge at that time, and anytime you have 'fullness' from eating, it slowly restores stamina. The slowly restoring stamina will get you easily through any swimming, mining, chopping, or whatever that you might want to do at that time (just pay attention to the stamina gauge to avoid passing out). This is most easily the best time to gather resources across the island if you need a lot of it, or if it is hard to find (so the infinite time afforded to you at 'late hour' lets you look for it.) This is also why you want hundreds of your chosen stamina food, ie cooked CACTUS FRUIT. Spare me the idea of having hundreds of cooked meat with any quickness or ease in the early game lol 6. Bugs seem to have disappeared from the game, or there aren't many? Restart the game! When you load in, all of the bugs will be back. Sometimes this is essential to fulfill requests. :) 7. Get the fishing boat early. This is unlocked via the first level of the vehicles license. It takes no stamina to travel with the boat, and it is pretty fast. You can also find a lot of pearls in the ocean waters (they sparkle so you can see them) and they sell for 5k dinks each. I've marked somewhere around 30 pearls on my map at the moment, and most are around my base. I can make an easy 150k dinks just collecting them all when they respawn. 8. Use metal detecting to make money. It is simply the fastest early game option for money making, plus you end up needing the materials it gives you later on (but don't let that worry you, the metal detecting materials are acquired without limit and you can always get more.) You get it as an available license after unlocking the first level of excavation (which metal detecting uses.) The rarest item you get from it, which looks like an engine, sells for 15k dinks - and all the rest of the items are fairly respectable in value. It isn't hard to make 100k from just a few minutes, and even better if you use the late hour and your hundreds of cactus fruit to metal detect and excavate to your heart's content. :) There are 2 items you don't ever want to sell to John, however, and those are the old keys and the shiny discs. The old keys are used later in the game to actually unlock treasure rooms. The shiny discs are given to Franklyn, a researcher npc, for quite a bit more than John and are used to unlock things with Franklyn in terms of exclusive stuff that he crafts for you. 9. You will have several crafting spots, like the firepit, where you pop an item in and then wait for a few seconds for the finished product to pop out. I recommend having 4-6 of each interactable item that does this - and for firepits (or barbecues when you get them) I suggest 2 rows of 3 of them to easily access them all and have a constant stream of cooking cactus fruit, your faster acquisition of hundreds of them will thank you. 10. If you're like me, and you want a base where you have the ability to decorate with outdoor walls - you can't *really do that* - BUT there is a way to make it look like you did. That way is to use the shovel to raise up some ground in a line, and then craft a flooring item (such as concrete flooring gotten through the landscaping license) and place it on that line - it will resemble walls and you could use this method to craft a whole citadel area if you wanted to. Additionally, when you place flooring OR dirt on the ground, it transforms what is underneath it into being the thing you put on top. Using that, you can turn dirt into sand, sand into dirt, or dirt/sand into concrete flooring. 11. You eventually get craftable signs, and you can put a picture of an item on them. You can use this to mark storage boxes by placing the sign behind the storage box. An example is to have a box with a sign behind it that has a picture of logs, denoting that the box is used for wood supplies.. The blueprint can be gotten randomly for fulfilling a villager request, or, randomly sold by Franklyn (he has a random blueprint on his desk each day.)

Pro tip: set up your town near to all 4 biomes and plant tons of each kind of fruit nearby as soon as you get a shovel, after a little while you'll have enough fruit salad to power you through any task you want to do.

1. I ended up putting my town almost in the center of the map. There was a convenient flat place, but also I can get to anywhere on the island and then back home again comfortably before dark. Something I haven't seen anyone mention yet - time stops until after you place those tents, so I spent about an hour exploring the whole island and picking up EVERYTHING. On day 1 I had level 13 forage skill, and had picked up 73K worth of stuff, along with tons of fruit to make an orchard with close to home base. I also dropped map markers while I was exploring so I know where all the ore deposits are. I also started with a crap ton of license points, because I hit milestones for walking, picking up fruit, picking up seashells, and so on.

I found stabbing jellyfish with a spear is good. The jelly they drop sells for a nice amount. Alas you can only get them when they're close enough to shore and they move REALLY slowly, lol.

Something I remembered(besides go resource hunting before placing the base tent down) is that the base tent has a travel case or whatever that can be used to place items in until you can make a crate. This travel case can also go with you when in multiplayer. So if someone went into the base tent they can only use their own travel case which can help if you want to hide valuable items in there. Also passing out weakens any tool in your inventory so just keep what you need on you when going somewhere that could knock you out.

I found logging to be the easiest beginning money maker. Because one of the first "quests" Fletch tasks you with is getting the table saw. Table saw + free logs on the ground = little to no stamina spent to turn logs into planks and profit ;) As for early meat, I usually make the dingo's do the work for me. Cheers!

Set up camp near the northern ocean and go night fishing for barracuda. They sell for 16,000 each and you can easily get 100,000 or more a night. Just make sure you bring food for energy at nighttime or you'll pass out!

In contrast to what these guys are saying, get varied licenses. Reason being is you can do more tasks every day with a good chance for getting more money and license currency. If you’re grinding your base, I would hyper focus less licenses

Seems like multiplayer would be nice for those hard to find resources. Maybe jump into some random persons world, and not troll them, but see what they have readily available. Maybe they've got something in plentiful quantities that's rarer on your island. Grab some stuff and head back home. Maybe leave a tip?

If you like farming sim games similar to animal crossing but more expaned like Dinkum; try terraria, stardew valley, raft, or starbound. Pretty sure all of these games are likely in console too though 🤔.

Get the metal detector ASAP! Finding barrels with stuff to sell is easy money! And every day new spots spawns. Dont worry too much about selling usefull items, if needed you can easily go on a metal detector spree to obtain what you need ☺️👌🏻

fishing and farming was the wrong license to get early game. lost a lot of daily quests because of farming since I haven't encountered Rayne yet. fishing is not that much of a waste but there are better ways of getting Dinks than fishing.
