Timo's Dinky Detailing

Timo's Dinky Detailing

3 жыл бұрын

This is an exciting video for me. I am restoring my own, very first Dinky toy.
I have improved much of my equipment so this will be a noticeably better quality video than my previous ones.
I hope you enjoy it.
Please forgive me for the silent parts of this video. The background music provider, listed below, complained and I had to remove their music to stop the de-monitization. I may soon do a redux version with new voiceover and music.

Hey Timo, Noah here from Texas. Hey Buddy great job on the restoration. a bit of advise, don't use the gel stripper use aircraft stripper. i use it all the time and it works great. takes all the paint right off. evapo-rust works beat when left for 48 hrs. other than that, GREAT JOB!!! I love the two tone. colors are worthy of a classic car like that.
@timosdinkydetailing
@timosdinkydetailing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Noah. I will look into the aircraft stripper. I would need it for the depths of winter. In the summer, I am now using caustic soda and boiling water. It strips the model in a few seconds. It makes copious amounts of toxic vapour, so I only do it outside. I find that Evaporust will work more quickly (over night) if the rust is superficial. Only once did I need to wait two days, but I could easily imagine needing even more time in some cases. 😉 Cheers. 🍺

That shade of blue on your newer model is called tiffany blue i know it cause its one of my fav shades of blue. Blue is my top fav colors out of 5 fav colors but yeah its tiffany blue also by watching other restore channels the trick when 2 tone painting and I've heard several mention as soon as you're done painting it's best to remove the tape before you let it dry so you don't risk stripping paint

Thanks for the tips Byron. This is one toy I may redo, in order to get the colour right. Great tip to know the name of the colour because it can't be mixed from primary colours. Great taping tip too. It's really a balancing act to get taping done right.👍

Thank you very much for your videos. I enjoy watching them. As a restorer myself, could I ask you the following questions, and get as much detail as possible please: 1. Size of drill to remove base rivet head. 2. Size of drill to drill out retaining posts. 3. Size of the tap to install threads in posts. 4. Size of screws to hold base in place and match the thread - who is the supplier and what part number please? 5. Size of the O-rings to replace tyres and part number and supplier please? All this is to fit a basic 1950s dinky car. I’m sorry for all the questions and the length but a big thank you! R, Sydney Australia 😊

@timosdinkydetailing Жыл бұрын
I will do my best. I don't remember the size of the drill I used to remove the rivet. I have tried all different sizes and have not found out which size is best. I am starting to wonder if chewing it off with a carbide cutter in a Dremel tool might be best. To drill out the post, I use the tap drill for a 4-40 thread, a wire size #39 (an Imperial size, because that is what I used as a Toolmaker, and as an Imax camera technician). The screw I use is a 4-40 hex socket button head cap screw 3/16" long. My original supply was discarded screws from a MKII Imax camera (we always replaced screws with new ones, discarding the once used old screw. I took many home with me rather than discard them). Now I get Chinese screws from Amazon. HH Fasteners is the company. This is all probably useless to you in Australia, since you have probably gone Metric there for much longer that we have in Canada. I am still all tooled up and stocked up with imperial tools and fasteners. I imaging an M3 or M2 hex socket button head cap screw would be similar to a 4-40 in size and function, and much easier to purchase. It certainly is here. When you get them, be sure to buy the matching tap and tap drill. I suggest a spiral flute tap, which is a little more expensive, but will draw out the swarf from the blind hole as you cut the thread. Some cutting fluid for aluminum (aluminium) or light oil is a necessity too. You don't want to break a tap in your casting! Cut slowly and back off frequently. Dinky castings can be very chewy. The O-rings I use for tires (tyres) are "uxcell Nitrile Rubber O-Rings 15mm OD 8mm ID 3.5mm Width, Metric Sealing Gasket, Pack of 50" also acquired from China through Amazon. I just bought my 4th bag now. I hope that helps. Cheers from Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦🇦🇺

Do you have the make and model and where one may be able to get that Air Brush you use?? And just a thought about your Chrome marker. If it has not been used in a while it might need to be shaken and mixed up. An discard the first couple of pumps.
@timosdinkydetailing

I bought the air brush on Amazon from "Vivo home", but many other ones look identical, with a different name on it. It came with the little compressor. I later bought a proper compressor, and that one came with another, identical air brush. I know to shake the pen, but I will try your suggestion of discarding the first stuff out.👍

If you're having problems with the chrome paint, why not try putting a clearcoat before attempting the chrome.

Thanks for the offer Ian. I appreciate it, but I don't need it. I bought a new windscreen for this model, but then decided to put back the original since this was my first dinky toy in my life. I figured the windscreen may have some psychic energy that needs to stay with the model.
