That bugger runs great! Sounds like a. 9.9! Beautiful lake you are on too! I am in the States, in Michigan

@@ALVintageOutboardsThank you! This is actually the ocean, not a lake! It's one of the "fjords" that we have in Norway!

Looks like a 1985 model which is great because I prefer the old style carbs over the new plastic crap. These 8hps really do pack a punch, they have a bigger intake manifold and different exhaust ports than the plain old 6hp. I really do like these engines but they have a few horrible engineering flaws, especially when used in salt water. The driveshaft/crankshaft spline love to rust and seize together, making gearcase removal very difficult or impossible. When used in salt water the gearcase should be pulled annually so the splines can be cleaned, and relubed, don't forget the sealing oring. The other issue is a $4 upper water tube grommet that loves to get crushed in salt water cutting down/off water flow to the powerhead. This should be replaced every few years as well when used in salt water. A high speed overheat is a great way to damage one of these powerheads quickly. Where is this exhaust leak you speak of?

Yeah, it might be an 85'. I just put a seal in the lower unit, so i greased up the shaft and made sure the o-ring was in place. The exhaust leak seems to be from the bottom of the block where it meets the lower cowl, so probably a vad base gasket if it's similar style as Mercurys(?). Anyway it doesn't bother me too much and it seems to run allright after I made the "quick fix" with the holes. I ran it in fresh water barrel before storage inside where it sits now. I agree these are great motors!

My brother has one that he has to run 15 minutes at idle before he can power up. Too soon, and it coughs. Is this a function of it choking on its exhaust gases and would the holes in front fix that?

That sounds more like regular carb issues. Carburator probably needs to get cleaned, and hence it does not run correctly before the engine is fully warmed up. I don't think the holes will fix that issue, unfortunately. It needs carb work or adjustment at a minimum (if it has an adjustable carb). You can try to leave the choke half way on and see if it makes it run ant better during initial start up procedure. If it does, then it runs too lean.

Air leaks in the fuel hoses or carb gasket can cause lean cough. Suggest not using zip ties on your hoses and use steel clamps. Check for cracks on the ends of the hoses.
