I volunteered at a Sanctuary where they rescued a wolf who was being kept as a pet and fed dry dog food. Poor thing was underweight and I believe he had teeth issues too due to his improper diet. Thankfully he was nursed back to full health and surprisingly, despite being almost 2-3 years old at the time, the pack he was introduced to fully accepted him as a new member (it’s usually easier to introduce pups). What was cool to learn was that when he was slowly introduced he kept his head, eyes, tail, and ears down but when the Alpha went to go investigate he kinda gave him a look before keeping his eyes down almost like he was politely asking to join and he was immediately accepted afterward.

Like I said before, you are just a wonderful person, who respects mother nature and loves our four legged companions. I wish there were more people like you, instead of killing them for fun or stupid sports (as they say). You take care of them, you are ABOVE AND BEYOND a wonderful human being, may GOD bless you James.

Yep. True statement about the kibble - even for dogs, it really isn't a good idea. On a side note, I've never had venison myself, but I am curious about how it tastes. At any rate, seeing Zeke happy makes me happy. God bless you and your work, James! 🥰

you say raw is the way to go for dogs too? is cooked meat bad for dogs?
@jackieisabelajaso6 ай бұрын
Yes it is it's hard for the system to digest and kind of goes out like it came in..
@Hathur6 ай бұрын
Not technically "bad" but definitely more difficult for them to digest. Unlike humans who spent nearly the past 800,000 years cooking our food, which caused our digestive systems to evolve for it, dogs did not get that time to evolve by eating cooked food for hundreds of thousands of years. It typically results in more frequent gastrointestinal problems for them to digest cooked food (constipation, diarhhea etc). Their stomachs and intestines are best suited for digesting raw, unprocessed meat. "Dog food", be it canned or kibble is one of the worst things to feed a dog (in the US and Canada the meat is not regulated like human-grade food is, resulting in toxins and chemicals ending up in the meat). I wish I could find it, but there was a study done a few years ago in the US that monitored 500 dogs over 10 years that were fed raw meat vs 500 dogs that were only fed processed dog food. The raw-meat dogs drastically outlived the dogs given dog food and had markedly lower rates of health problems while alive.

@@HathurTechnically speaking domestic dogs did evolve with us from very early on - we co-evolved, we made them more friendly, they made us more territorial, and together we absolutely dominated the landscape, some anthropologists even say our alliance is what helped us survive whatever event wiped out the Neanderthals as we could hunt bigger game and protect our villages - eating from the trash piles outside our settlements. As we moved from hunter-gatherers to agriculture our trash piles got less meaty and more starchy, and the dog species adapted to be able to digest more starchy foods, because those that couldn't died, so they can tolerate moderate amounts of starch. From what I understand, most dogs benefit from having a percentage of carbs in their diet, especially smaller breeds which expend energy faster (and often struggle with bones and meat chunks) or working dogs that burn through their food, but they can do without if that energy intake is compensated elsewhere; it will cause a necessary increase in overall food consumption, with a proportional increase in defecation frequency, and apparently much smellier faeces and urine as well. @jaydavis9717 And to answer OP, cooked meat isn't bad. It's actually EASIER to digest, as the heat breaks up protein bonds and makes them more readily absorbed, it's how we get the energy to power our energy-hungry brains. When a dog is sick giving them cooked PLAIN chicken and rice is a good, easy option to make sure they have both energy and protein in abundance, it's not a complete meal but for the short time they need the boost, especially in dogs that are otherwise unwilling to eat, it works wonders. Source: I'm nearly graduated from veterinary medicine school, and am interning at a small veterinary hospital where it's standard procedure to ask the owners to bring cooked rice with chicken for picky dogs.

As my brother (who is a total softie for all animals but has a scientific brain) would say: it's the cycle of life. Different species need certain food types. Now I may not be as smart as him but I do have a scientific brain as well. One thing I know very well is spinal muscular atrophy - a rare genetic disease that causes severe and rapid deterioration of ALL the muscles in the body. I have had this disease my entire life so I obviously know it's very well personally, but I also know it statistically and Scientifically - and because we lack the essential Protein called SMN 1 and not enough SMN 2 to make up for it, those of us who have this disease need to eat a lot of Protein. And plants are not enough. We need MEAT! Lol. That said, I don't think that I could ever eat deer - unless my life was at stake and that was the only thing available. My dad made rabbit stew once and me and My brother sat on the porch eating Pop tarts instead. Lol.

Processed food is bad for everyone. Pets, wolves, people, livestock. Natural foods we would eat anyway are the best. Do you guys get donations from the DNR? Like deer that were hit by a car? I know it sounds bad but if you get them fast enough they are just fine.
