Only played Rome but its a bitch, your surrounded by mostly hostile tribes and the Etruscans in the north too big to deal with now, so you kinda have to go further inland with mountains restricting movement and take a while to move through. South is "better" territories can be so small that a army station at their city could be at your doors in 1 or 2 turns while you struggle pay for armies or improve economy. I pretty much relied on Hammer an Anvil or Skirmisher tactics to pin down the enemies armies so my general+cavalry to swing around to kill the general asap.

Now, here's a thought: Have you played the Civil War campaign as the Boat King Pompey? It's super easy, because the AI forgets that you can take coastal cities and so usually leaves them ungarrisoned!
