Speedwagon! I loved your confusion in the first minutes of the episode "Wait, they're friends now!?". Such a good set-up. The over-the-top drama in everything the characters do is just the best. An interesting part of Jojo, that will come up more and more often: Names are usually references, most of the time to music, like Dio's name comes from THE Dio. This anime is actually a gateway for people to get into music that the author, Araki Hirohiko, likes. So you can get a lot out of the references that are strewn across the series as well.

Yes,i agree, before the 1980s, rich people were also treasure hunters around the world. They travelled to Egypt, Africa, the depths of the Amazon... they travelled to all kinds of unexplored places and brought back rare artefacts, which they proudly displayed on the walls of their homes. It was a time when it was a status thing for ordinary people to possess things they had never seen or heard of.

The series later explain where it came from but the anime cut out the whole Aztec sacrificial cult involving the mask happening at the very beginning of the manga. It was animated in the 90s adaptation of the Part 3 though.

The fact that colors often change is to give the sense of passion and intense moment happening, indeed there are very few canon colors in jojo. Btw, Jonathan's dream job would've been the historian, therefore he kinda understood how that ancient mask could work. That Ogre Street (where jojo fought against those criminals) is a reference to the queen's song "Ogre battle". 22:51 The label on the bottle reads both "Cronenberg," a reference to the Canadian director, David Cronenberg, as well as "Dead Zone," a film he had directed, cause Araki was a fan of. Araki (the creator of the manga) started jojo as a work to celebrate humanity, that is in any kind of manner, so through the brave, courage and kindness of Jonathan (rappresenting the pure good) in opposition to the selfishness, cruelty and betrayal of Dio (who is the pure evil). Therefore that mask, who has the power to transform humans into non-humans, has a great symbolism. Hype for next reactions! Love that you are loving it from 2 episodes ❤

Jonathan's family has the mask because buying artefacts robbed form indigenous cultures was just kind of a thing rich British people did at the time. The whole backstory with it is explained in greater detail as the series goes on, but you'll notice the ending sequence is made up of a stone carving depicting an Aztec human sacrifice ritual, right? IIRC the earliest pages of the manga outright DEPICTED an Aztec ritual involving the mask before cutting to London, but the in the anime the ED is supposed to be the big indicator of what the deal is.
