The only way I can listen to music is thru KZbin or some other radio channel that usually stops playing in the middle of a song. My Wi-Fi carrier is terrible! In addition I have forgotten a lot of the old names and the classics did I grow up with and remember hearing. Maybe one day my memory will come back...

Just when "The Wanderer" met and fell in love with the girl he wanted to settle down with, she turned out to be "Runaround Sue", and he found out what it felt like for all the girls he used and left in his wake: "I kiss 'em and I love 'em, cause to me they're all the same . I hug 'em and I squeeze 'em. They don't even know my name." (Poor guy.)

@@MissAstorDancer Then, I guess I had it reverse: Here was this upstanding guy, so traumatized by the way "Runaround Sue" left him with a broken heart, that he *became* "The Wanderer"! It took him "several months", as you wrote, for his lamentation (and lots of record sales singing about it) to morph into revenge on all women through the same behavior he suffered from Sue (and lots more record sales singing about that too)! ;-)

Fun fact - Runaround Sue was written about the girl that Dion married two years after the song came out. Although he originally denied it, saying the song was generally about the kind of girl who leads you on, but won't commit, he finally admitted it some time in the 90s. (His wife always claimed the song was about her. They are still married.)

Dion is a great inspiration and a rock 'n' roll legend. He's the only surviving headliner from the Buddy Holly Winter Dance Party Tour. His account of that tour is the definitive version of what happened. I highly recommend finding his telling of it on KZbin. He got bogged down in drugs but hit bottom and got cleaned up, ultimately becoming a committed Christian; and he's still making records to this very day! His wife's name is actually Susan. I heard him in an interview asked if she was Runaround Sue. His answer: 'She wishes.' (They were high school sweethearts and are happily married to this very day.)

Right. "Runaround Sue" is a Silent Generation song. By the late '60s, the Boomer Generation was doing things different, and the music changed... In 1961, the birth control pill was newly FDA approved, but only for married women. Abortion was mostly illegal. It was pretty common for couple's 1st baby to be born "premature" (less than 9 months after the honeymoon; good manners assumes that would be the conception date). Plus, all the guys 16+ had cars. (Just trying to add historical context, not political opinion.)

Well, I was going to thank you for listening to what my father once referred to as "my" song, because my name is Susan. However, he said it because I was sixteen, had my own car and liked to go places with my friends. I was too busy to stay home. I was a virgin, and he knew it, so I never thought of it the way you described it until now. It was a little before my time, I heard it in the '70s. I think I'll just stick to my memory of it being a fun song 😉. Like Build Me Up Buttercup. Something we just loved to sing along to. ✌️

"Runaround Sue" was a staple for road trips when I was a kid -- it's so fun to sing along with! But if you want to see a MAJOR transition in depth and style for an artist, check out Dion's "Abraham, Martin, and John." That never fails to bring tears to my eyes and is a poignant tribute to some of the men who were killed for trying to advance civil rights (the song references Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., and John and Robert Kennedy). It's amazing to think Dion released "Abraham, Martin, and John" just 7 years after such a happy, pop song as "Runaround Sue."

This Dion Song 'Runaround Sue' and 'The Wanderer' were released around 1961/62 when I was 11 years old (that makes me 69 now). No rude words were heard on songs back then. I agree with Kathleen Diaz about what dating meant to us. I think we lived in a more innocent age. I like your work and find it very interesting what a young person today makes of the music of the 50's and 60's. For me they are nostalgic. From 1964 - 70 I listened to a lot of southern soul (labels like Stax records and artists like Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, Arthur Conley, Wilson Picket, Percy Sledge... To answer you questions, the word "ho" wasn't around in 1961, when this song came out,; "whore" was, but it obviously couldn't be used publicly, so the "acceptable" word was "tramp;" The word "runaround" itself wasn't used that much, but the phrase "she 'runs around' a lot" was (and yes, it meant EXACTLY what you think it did . . .). Artists "back in the day" had to find all sorts of creative ways to say what they wanted to but still make it "acceptable" to society at large, and--as you can tell--they usually found ways to do it.

First, ignore my singing along, my dear. Second, please remember that in those days everything was based on "it has a beat and you can dance to it." Plus, Elvis, Fabian, Dion...yeah...Presley, Forte, DiMucci. In other words, just join the sock hop and go with the flow. Now I will go back to listening to your reaction, I paused at 2:32. Had to pause at 4:35. I was laughing before you were laughing and we laughed together...but I still love this song and got up and danced! Paused at 5:27. No, we thought differently in those days. We thought of this a dating. She is not a girl who 'goes steady.' She gets a movie, dinner, and some jewelry or stuffed animals out of you and moves on. She is not going to marry you. There would be kissing and maybe, just maybe, some petting, but that is it. And, yes, hoe is new, whore was the word and it was a cuss word, she would be called a little town flirt. BTW, there is a song about a little town flirt. Of course you could say Runaround...it is in the title! The rest, no...well, in locker rooms, my dear. And if a girl 'slept around,' it was gossiped about by the other girls and she would not have friends, so she found consolation in guys. Some were ashamed but many were loud and proud. I had a friend, Suzie, who had a big butt and if some girl made fun of her so whirled around, looked them in the eye and said (I was senior in high school by then) "The bigger the tush, the easier the push" and walk off. And she was virgin. Also, every guy that dated and got dumped by Runaround Sue told the guys in the locker room that he scored. That was how girls got a bad rep in those days...male ego. Runaround Sue hit #1 in 1961. I was 15.

I love Dions Christian Music!!!! “My Prayer for You”, “Here is My Servant”, “Another Saturday night in Heaven “, “I put away my idols “.... INCREDIBLE MUSIC that takes me back to the beginning of my life in Christ! That FIRST LOVE!!!! Dions testimony was amazing to read as well. The fact that he “lost” the coin toss and had to ride the bus with no heater while Richie Valenz (?), The Big Bopper and Buddy Holly “got” to ride in that fateful airplane SHOOK HIM TERRIBLY! But it brought him to his knees and SUCH INCREDIBLE MUSIC CAME FROM THAT!!! I love him!!!! Runaround Sue was NOT about his wife Suzie! But.. I dare ANYONE listening to this song to NOT start clapping and snapping your fingers and dancing around!!!! DION said he didn’t consider himself a great singer...but A GREAT STORY TELLER 😊

My mother would have called her a lose women. This would have been around 1960. Buy the time I was in my late teens in the late 70 we called them fun dates. Mom still called them lose women or trash.

This song was from around 1964 but was always popular with anybody who heard it. At that time, Sue would have been the “town tramp”. ❤️🎵

Read between the lines. "Sue goes out with other guys" is easily replaced with "Sue goes down with other guys," which is easily what teens of the times (1950s and I was one of them) were thinking, as I'm sure Dion was. Early rock and roll was full of innuendo and suggestion.

Dion was supposed to be on the plane that killed Buddy Holly, Big Bopper and Rickie Valins, but the cost of the charter was equivalent to a month's rent when he was a kid so he balked and just took the bus. So thankfully his music didn't die that day.

It is 50's. Girls back then simply had a REPUTATION and that was all that needed to be said. Dion and the Belmont's came out of the " Doo Wap " era of Philly. some of them made really big . I think Dion still tours today.

Released in 1962. Back in the day this was recorded, nice girls didn’t put out. If they did, it wasn’t until they were engaged. Any girl who slept with a guy had a very bad reputation, the whole school knew about it, and was shunned by other girls.

Hey Modern Renaissance Dude. You Rock.! Love your honest reactions to all this old school music. In your intro, I saw you do that back flip, Wow! Only one I ever saw a little better was in 1969 in Phoenix. John Fogerty did a standing back flip while he held his guitar!!! Hey, can you do a review of Love....Seven and Seven is. They were innovators! Thanks Again, So are You!😊

Yeah, this was yet another song I grew up listening to on the old vinyl records my parents had. It always had a good beat for house-cleaning. *LOL* Though it's not by the same group, another song this one tends to make me think of (I think they might have been on the same set of mixed songs from that general era,) is "Silhouettes" by The Rays. It's one of those "tells a story" songs from the Do-Wop days and I think you'd appreciate it. :)

It was late fifties, I graduated in 1958. Yes we had a word for those kind of girls and it was "tramp". We didn't say it loudly though, it was whispered. We didn't cuss or use bad words in my day. Some people did and I did not dare bring anyone home that did........Darlene

Hey Modern Renaissance Man, I just stumbled on to you a little while ago and you have to know, I'm loving your reactions to to these old tunes. They're absolutely golden yet how could they be anything less? You're bringing up some of the best of the best. It's hard to believe someone with your savvy in so many arenas has never heard them. Where have you been, son? From The Righteous Brothers to Joe Cocker and on and on, you've hit the finest tunes ever but you have a bunch more to go. That said, I have two in mind that I'm dying to see your reaction to so here goes. Take a listen to Leo Sayer's "More Than I Can Say" and Gary Wright's "My Love Is Alive" and tell me what you think. Until then, I shall be waiting with bated breath to hear from you! Happy listening! Peace out! 💗 Naomi

When this was popular, it just meant that she was fickle and flirted or dated a lot of other guys but not necessarily sexual. Think Dion wrote this and most of his other hits too. Probably was out about 1960 or so.

I think this song and Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Darlene Love have similar sounds because they are reflections of the time with influences from the late 50s and early 60s sounds of rock and roll and doo-wop.

I'm little young to remember but I know people who remember. Like television, radio had a lot of rules on what you can say in those days. The year was 1961. Heavy censorship. So runaround was better than saying Sleeparound. But people would use words like "slut" or "whore" when gossiping (about women like Runaround Sue) with close friends in private. There were a lot more social rules so people were generally more polite. Also girls spoke more freely with other girls. Guys were the same with other guys. Mixed company conversations were more censored.

Dion used heroin in the early days but he found Christ, recovered and also made albums of Christian music. He outlived many of the early Rocker's and has been married to the same lady since was a young guy. I'd call him a Survivor.
