I remember when this first premiered on HBO in the 80's...My Parents were so excited, taped it on the VCR and watched it with the family and their friends...it brought them back to a time & seeing Gladys, Patti & Dionne perform together was a huge deal for them and their generation. This brings memories. Im thinking of Mom and Dad as i watch this. RIP Mommy and Daddy, i love You and I miss you so much...God how i miss you both. Benniidict thank you so much for this post. The quality is great!

I loved patti's performance; the song would not have been so excellent without her. also, gladys is as powerful singer as there ever was, patti just has a higher range than most, her phrasing is incomparable. Dionne brings just the right flavor to mellow patti and Gladys. they are awesome. man, I miss singers like that.

Haters gonna hate. People always have to have something crappy to say. First of all, Patti MAKES this song. The folks saying she's being "selfish" and "not harmonizing" are missing the point that this piece was meticulously arranged to showcase her vocal ability, particularly. The program, "Sisters in the Name of Love," has a bunch of different songs, some solo pieces of the three, and others, with them as a trio. And each one highlights a different performer, providing a diverse array of music and showcasing ALL the talent. Unless you've watched the entire show, then you really don't know what you're talking about. You wouldn't be critiquing the fact that this one piece showcases Ms. LaBelle, because you would see that the producers and musicians are professionals who are fully capable of engineering each piece to intentionally highlight a different singer. Now, having said all that, there is a song in the show in which Ms. Patti clearly steps on Ms. Knight's line, for which the latter makes her displeasure very obvious. It's a really sour (perhaps bitter) moment that mars an otherwise very heartwarming and strong concert. Can't remember which piece it is, but if you watch the concert, the moment is unmistakable. Anyway, I hope they made up for it after the fact.

i like all 3 but i have to say this and many may get mad; up your game if you want to sing with Patti; she has a strong instrument and to ask her to contain it is just not right; she performs her craft the best she can, always giving 1000%; why would you want anything less from her; by the way she won entertainer of the year this year for her controlled but strong performance. bloop. enough said

people always complain about over-singing way more than under-singing. "selfish" singer. don't ask a singer with a powerful voice and a lot of passion to sing with you if you can't handle it. and so the hell what if she's proud of her voice and not scared to share all that she can do... i'm sick of this idea that you HAVE to be humble so that you don't make people feel bad about their inadequacies.
@rayjones5684
@rayjones5684 10 жыл бұрын
who said that you have to be humble to because you hold back. That's just makes no sense in music. It's like the piano player playing when the flute player part comes up, or the tuba player playing when the piano player should be playing as loud as you can. That's just makes no sense even with voices and singer!

ray jones this would make sense if the complaint was someone was singing during someone else's solo.

Or singing someone elses parts that whats people are saying. You are splitting hairs. I see and hear people do it in church choirs all the time. This not that heavy but I totally get what many are saying here...
@cnr200220062011
@cnr200220062011 10 жыл бұрын
ray jones not splitting hairs. merely addressing what was actually stated. the complaints i was referring to were that she was singing too loudly or boastfully and therefore being "selfish", not that she was singing during someone else's solo.
@rayjones5684
@rayjones5684 10 жыл бұрын
Again that's the same thing Rush in. Not looking for a fight but if we have different parts in a song and we are singing in harmony then yes if I am singing too loudly and singing not only my high parts (Patti would be the soprano of the three ladies, Dionne would sing the mid- and Gladys the low altos) but in the middle of the other two ladies parts yes I can see the complaints. I recall several people said the same thing when this aired. LOve Patti clearly the other two ladies love Patti but you don't have to sing as loud as you can in order to be heard. Patti is a very skilled singer she knows how to create harmony when singing...not sure if she always wants too...

well if you read patti's book she said that dionne pulled her to the side and asked her to tone it down when they were harmonizing. she replied that she just was caught up in the moment. gladys comment in her book that she agreed with dionne that when patti sang her solo part she could do what she wanted but when harmonizing she needed to tone it down. my argument is this; they have known one another for years and when gladys put this together and asked patti to be a part of it she should have know who she was getting; you can't ask a performer to perform with you and give restrictions. maybe this is why Aretha backed out as well as roberta flack

I love Patti too but come on with the Dionne and Gladys can't this and that with Patti, please it's called blending in a group and that is exactly what Dionne and Gladys is doing. They are all distinctive and certainly been holding their own without Patti or anybody else please!!! Kill the comparison accept for the fact they all have they own distinct and powerful voices to me.
@singingmanmd
@singingmanmd 10 жыл бұрын
And also when you group sing you should blend. Sure when you are singing solo or with a group you can be yourself and if you do not blend (sharp, flat, too loud, too soft etc), its ok for you counterparts to tell you or to make suggestions. That is why it is called "group" and the practice to makes it as perfect and enjoyable as possible. What you think, for instance when all those singers got together for "We are the World" they could just go in the studio and be themselves without any instructions on how to sing together and blend and the song should play out (think)? It didn't become a huge success without cooperation vocally or professionally. Y0u can not just have notes flying all over the place. Notes should land in the right places and at the right time. It is called professional singing with some soul, smh.

CoCoMoroney It's interesting the different perspectives individuals have. I thoroughly enjoyed their version of this song and really felt they complemented each other DIVINELY. Patti LaBelle is known to be a powerful singer. HalleluYah! Anyone not able to appreciate and accept this would not sing with her or have her collaborate with them they way Dionne Warwick and Gladys Knight have for years. Heaven on Earth performance.
